I am going to be going to meet a seller later about a 2002 albert pujols game worn jersey. I have never owned a game used jersey, so I was wondering what I should be looking for to make sure it is authentic. I know that there is something about the tagging that will help prove its authenticity. So does anyone know what the tagging should read for a 2002 pujols jersey? Or anything else I should look for? Also what do you think a fair price is to pay for it? Thanks.

Justin,

You can start by reading Rob Steinmetz's article on Pujols game-used items -- it includes a section on 2002 jerseys. Here's the link:

You should go to Getty Images or some other site to view as many photos of 2002 Cardinals jerseys as possible. Take note of where the number on the front of the jersey is placed (and how large it is); the look of the DK57 and JFB patches; and the amount of material on the nameplate. Most 2002 Pujols fakes have the front number misplaced, they have too much white material left and right of "PUJOLS" on the plate, or they have retail JFB and DK57 patches.

Here's a link to an earlier thread on 2002 Pujols jerseys that has helpful information:

Be very careful and do your homework. I've seen a few 2002 Pujols jerseys show up in major auctions -- complete with LOAs -- and all of them seem to have some kind of inconsistency. It also should be noted that the Cardinals Care charity has sold more than one 2002 replica Pujols jersey, made up solely for auction/fundraising purposes. Good luck.

I am resurrecting this old thread, as an Albert Pujols 2009 spring training BP jersey is up for bids on www.mlb.com (http://www.mlb.com) auctions. The jersey is a size 50, and has some rounding to the tail.

The tail on this doesn't concern me. What I would like to see, though, is a photo of Pujols wearing a regular BP jersey during spring training. He seems to favor the zipper-front pullover to the standard-issue Cool Base shirt. I've reviewed hundreds of photos on the Post-Dispatch Web site and Getty, and the next photo I see of him wearing this shirt will be the first.

Maybe he never cut off the tail because he seldom, if ever, wore it.
