Yankees wear 34 on back of hat?

Wow I have never seen that before and by the looks of it, it is a fairly recent cap. To be honest someone else may be a better cap expert than me on the Yankees but other than 39 I have never seen a cap with 34 on it especially not like that.

I'm going to guess it was for Mel Stottlemyre pitching coach for the Yanks between 1996-2005 who was diagnosed with blood cancer while he was with them.
