Tigers are hanging on, hopefully Huff will provide some run support. I'd love to see Tiger fans stuff.
I'll start with a few locker tags (Bonderman from this year and last year's Spring Training, Laird's and Willis' tags as well). I've frame the tags w/ some auto jersey's I have.
I'd love to see some Cecil Fielder tributes. (I need some ideas, I have a jersey, bat and ball).

Not necessarily a 'Tigers Fan', but a baseball fan in general, so I have a couple of Tigers pieces in the collection:

This one came to me with the background info on it as having been used either in a episode of Magnum P.I. - OR - in Mr. Baseball when Selleck comes back to the US as the Manager of the Tigers. Either way, I think It's a great piece:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Memorabilia/Hats/SelleckMovieWornCap.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Memorabilia/Hats/SelleckMovieWornCapAU.jpg

But this one is one of the CROWN JEWELS of my Collection... I watched this hat for TWO MONTHS on eBay, but was skittish of the 'Detroit Tigers, Inc.' cert since most clubs are listed as Detroit Tigers Baseball Club, Inc. etc.

I finally did a Google search on Detroit Tigers, Inc, and it took me to the Tigers Home Page!!! I searched the guys name on the COA and he is (or was - not sure if he still is) the Equipment Manager on the Tigers Page.

I immediately went back and dropped the requested $74.99 opening bid and won it for that amount with $5.00 s/h...

An AUTOGRAPHED (and INSCRIBED)... GAME USED (from his LAST Season in MLB)... WITH the 1994 '125th Anniversary Pin' still attached on the back.... HALL of FAMER's Cap...

George 'SPARKY' Anderson:

Lou Whitaker LVS and Pete Incaviglia Cooper. These were the first game used items I ever purchased. They were $25 each from the Tigers Dugout Store at the old Tiger Stadium in the early-90's. I was able to get the Whitaker bat signed a few years ago (I think I paid more for the autograph).

Wow. Some absolutely-awesome stuff. Holy cow.

I think my favorite, besides the Fielder jersey, is the Venezuelan Cabrera gamer. That's beautiful.

Tigerdale, may I ask how you came by the '99 Cordero? I'd just like to try to find any regular-season home with the patch still on. I have a BP of Todd Jones, but I'd really like a regular. The only one I've seen available is on a website where some crackpot is trying to get $700 out of an Encarnacion. All of the rest I've seen have the patches removed.

on either May 11, 1990, May 14, 1990, or Sept 4, 1990, fielder faced duane ward in a game against the jays. fielder ended up cracking the bat and gave it to ward after the game. he inscribed it "D. Here are my four Jack Hannahan jerseys from 2006. He was only up for a week or so and only got into 3 games. The untagged road and one of the home jerseys' lettering and wash tags show very light use (probably from one wash). What is interesting is when I got him to sign one of the jerseys at a game, he said he had kept some of his Tigers jerseys, but I can't see why the Tigers would issue a mid-season callup more than 2 jerseys of each style. I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

Seems like he could've meant bp and/or st? I would have to think that Hannahan had plenty of st jerseys, and I can't remember seeing any in the wild.

Thanks Frink,

That was the only thing I could think of. From what I remember, Jack was invited to three spring trainings. Still, it is a little odd that a guy who had been in the minors for six years and who may never even got his "cup of coffee" wouldn't have wanted at least one of the jerseys from the call up. I also have his road helmet from the callup...wish I could have landed the home one too.

Chris,

another thing to consider is the ones that are not year tagged, like one of your road jerseys pictured means it is also from the same year tagged 2006 jersey's.

Dmitri Young's first season with the Tigers was 2002, i have seen in the Tigers Inventory of older jerseys five 2002 #26 Young 3 Patch ST jersey's, 3 home, 2 road, 1 home jersey had the correct Tigers 100 yr Chartered Member patch, and the other 4 had the regular standard MLB 100 yr patch, and all showed wash wear, plus i have a pic of Young wearing a road jersey with the standard 100 yr. MLB patch., which means anything and any amount of jerseys prepared/worn by a player was possible with the Detroit Tigers.

Chris, I would say you have the Mother Load of Tigers Jack Hannahan jersey's.

Your Worth bat should have letters/numbers stamped into the knob to be a game "model" or game issued bat. AT for Alan Trammell. Then the length without the 3. Example 34 1/2 in bat would be marked 4 1/2. Then the model number. W225 or something like that.

Hope that helps.

I thought it was about time to bump up this thread...

I picked up this Damion Easley LVS C243 at the Midwest Sports Collectors Show in Novi at the end of last month for cheap. I think I have dated it to 1998 (which was his All-Star season with the Tigers).

Technically this is an Angels item, but I remember Ruppert Jones as a member of the 1984 Tigers. Also, since I believe this bat was used by another former Tiger, I figured why not post it here too.

Ruppert Jones LVS (most likely used by Gary Pettis) and has a repaired handle crack. I knew when I purchased it that it was most likely Jones issued and used by someone else as Jones has never worn #24. I am terrible at dating bats, but I think it is from his time with the Angels (85-87). In 1985, Rufino Linares wore #24 and played 18 games and had 43 ABs. In 1986 and 1987, Gary Pettis wore #24 and played in close to 300 games and had over 900 ABs. So, the probability that Pettis used the bat is much higher.

Ironman,

Nice TBTC Billy Ripken jersey there. I have the Herndon version, but thought that it was Detroit "Cubs". If I recall correctly, the Detroit Cubs were a minor league negro league team from the 30's. I think that is the only year they wore this rather that the two styles of Stars jerseys they frequent.

I know it doesn't make a difference on the jersey. In the event that you keep track or detailed records of your jerseys, hopefully it helps.

I picked up this helmet from TigerFest 2010. I found this in the Tigers Foundation tent (as opposed to the Tigers Authentics tent). I dug through their game used helmet bin and pulled out this right-handed batter helmet with a #9 on the back of it. There is also athletic tape with 06 on the side and one of the people manning the tent said that all helmets came from the clubhouse and the athletic tape supposedly denotes the year used.

Also, the production wheel is 06 and points to 8 (August 2006, possibly). TigerDale has also confirmed that his Carlos Guillen helmet is the same size (7 1/8). So, everything points to this being a Carlos Guillen game used helmet. The pictures:

I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on whether I should take the athletic tape "06" off. I can see the benefit of leaving it as it obviously helps authenticate it, but aesthetically it might look better if I remove it. Again, your thoughts?

It has been a goal of mine to obtain a game used Alan Trammell bat since I started collecting. Finally, after a 20+ year wait, I received one of my holy grails in the mail.

The bat is from 06/11/91 and looking at the box score he had quite a day as well: 2 for 5, 2 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored in a 5-1 Tigers victory!

The pictures:

In the spirit of making this an educational thread, as well as a place to show off your stuff, I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison of my Alan Trammell game used bat vs. my Alan Trammell game model bat.

First of all, the knob stamp is the first dead giveaway. The game used bat has the following stamped on the bottom: AT, 4 1/2, WO127 Also, a game used bat should have his number 3 at the very least and may also have additional markings (denoting weight) that were placed on it by the Tigers equipment manager.

Game Model (L) and Game Used (R)
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee92/mbriev16/Trammellbats02.jpg

Second of all, the barrell on the game used bat is stamped without leaving indentations, while the game model bat is engraved leaving indentations where it was stamped into the bat.

Game Model (top) and Game Used (bottom)
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee92/mbriev16/Trammellbats01.jpg

http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee92/mbriev16/Trammellbats03.jpg

One other thing that I was able to determine is that the game used bat had a lower grain count making it a better piece of wood. You can see this best in the photo of the knob.

Magglio Ordonez used what appeared to be an Ivan Rodriguez LVS P72 in the first inning when he grounded out to second to pick up an RBI.

According to Marc Himelstein in one the emails he sent out last year,

At the end of the 2008 season, I cleared the clubhouse of all remaining Pudge bats. ... As I went through the bats the other day, I pulled out one dozen nice Marucci bats. These were a rare find considering the amount of bats he left behind.

If a dozen of a bat is "rare", he must have left many more than that. I would assume that between Rodriguez being traded and the end of the season when Marc collected the remaining lumber, many of the other players took some it it.

Also, Rodriguez "left behind a box of cleats after he was traded".

Anybody make it to the Garage Sale?

I got my Trammell Cooper bat signed today, and felt like taking a family photo of my early 90s Tigers bats. I would love to add a Tettleton, Deer, Fielder, Cuyler, and Fryman someday...those were some terrible teams, but they were fun to watch and scored a ton of runs.

Where did ya see Trammell today??
He was signing at the Sports Spectacular (formerly the Chicago Sun-Times show) in Rosemont, IL. Quite a few Detroit athletes there this weekend: Trammell, Whitaker, Lem Barney, Barry Sanders, Jim Bunning, Dennis Rodman. I just needed Trammell, well, that's not entirely true, Barry Sanders was a little too rich for my blood.

Session Date: May 07, 2008

Authenticator: AUTHENTICATORS, INC.
Additional Information: 1ST BASE -USED TOP OF 6TH INNING THROUGH BOTTOM 9TH

I also checked the video highlights on MLB.com, that was the broken bat single. Maybe the other person owns a base from that game before the 6th inning? I bought mine right from the Marc at the Tigers.

Here's a bit of a different one. When I was finishing grad school back in the early 90's I did an internship at the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association in their marketing office. They had this hang-up when doing an old timers type game that the first person to claim a number got it and the next person couldn't use it....like it was a real game. I always thought it was silly, fans want to see their heroes in the number they wore as players. Anyway, that's why it's #7.

Thanks, Dale. I appreciate your input. Probably going to pass, but like to add to my knowledge. I have seen game photos of Trammell using Worth, LVS, and Cooper. Additionally, I have a baseball card of him posing with an SSK bat. I'm sure over a 20 year MLB career he did his fair share of tinkering. I'm just not sure how comfortable I am that he used this bat in an actual game.

That seller's listing got me to thinking about the Tigers Dugout Store at the Old Tiger Stadium. If I remember it correctly, all proceeds from the store went to Sparky Anderson's charity.

Other things I remember from the store:

1) Alan Trammell and Cecil Fielder game used bats were displayed on the back wall behind the cash register for $150

2) Game used bats of lesser players were placed in large bins and were $25--this is where I picked up my Pete Incaviglia and Louis Whitaker bats

3) Game used/issued bats of stars from other teams in a separate bin.

No idea what else was sold in the store, but would love to hear some additional information from other Detroit area collectors. What years was it in operation? Pricing? etc. Thanks!

Those are great memories....I remember my first two bats I bought there, Rich Rowland & Shawn Hare...then the store moved into the 'tiger plaza' area when that was added on to the stadium. The tigers had an 'authentics' area..I still have a couple framed photos, 16x20 size I think..of Easley & Matt Anderson that say tiger authentics along the bottom (I waited until they blew these out to buy them). I also picked up a Tram & Whitaker bats there, seems both were 25 or 50 at the time. You'd see hats & helmets from time to time....great memories.

recently picked up this 1998 home Bill Ripken jersey....I know the tags reads ST, but I'm hoping it was worn in the regular season as well:

I'm just curious if anyone can add as to what the handwriting in marker on the tag represents? "JS" "G"

JS are the initials of the tigers equiptment manager Jim Schmakel and G stands for gamer (I've always assumed). His initials were seen on most tiger jerseys if they left the clubhouse, but nowdays w/ authentics, some do leave w/out his initials on them.

I was looking at the Carlos Guillen 2010 Home Jersey with the EH patch on Saturday. I noticed that the jersey had the JS and G marking on the tag although it was on the game issued rack. Marc Himelstein came over and try to sell me on the jersey. He stated that they were selling it as a game issued because it was not MLB authenticated. He did say Jim Schmakel often makes these markings "to feel a part of the process." Marc said it in a little bit of a snide tone. I know that Jim has been doing this for years and I believe it was his way of authenticating stuff. It is now a bit dated as the Tigers obviously don't give it much weight.

It still could be Jims way of letting us know what was used or not when it leaves the clubhouse. I noticed on that issued rack too some he had marked 'N'...I figured that was for 'new' or 'not used' which I thought was kind of cool.

Here's a couple photos of a Magglio bat back in 2008 which I thought were cool because it shows he used the same bat in BP & during the game that day (thanks Rich for putting these together for me!!!). Ive had the bat for a year or so...

Dale, you are absolutely right and I saw the same thing. Even though Marc was a little dismissive, he still looked at the labeling Jim provided and confirmed the markings on the taggings as being accurate. I think the frustration for Marc is that he can't get his mark-up without it being MLB authenticated.

Glad you mentioned the "N" marking, that was the first time I had ever seen that on a Tigers jersey. Good to know what to look for especially if/when some of this stuff hits the secondary market.

Thanks for the information. I got this jersey directly from Bill Ripken himself a couple weeks ago. He told that the equipment manager for team USA in the WBC was the Tigers equipment manager (Bill was the third base coach) and he brought it out with him to give to Bill that spring.

Tigerdale picked up these gloves at Tigerfest for me. I haven't seen anyone other than Jackson wearing this style, in this color. I guess they could be his, but anythings possible.

This goes back to as far as the 1980s. In that era, unlike now, the Tigers made a concerted effort to restrict game-used jerseys getiing in the hands of fans and collectors. It was not uncommon for game-used dealers at Detroit area shows to hide their Tigers unies under their tables and only bring them out for trusted customers. Horror stories have been told of dealers even having their Tigers jersey inventory confiscated by undercover team employees under threats of calling the police to charge the dealer with possession of stolen merchandise. Back then, the JS and G notations were Schmakel's way of marking an item as being legitimately released into the marketplace by the team Jerseys without these markings on the tag (at least the JS) were considered by the team to be stolen property, and undercover team employees would visit small and large card shows looking for the unmarked ones.

A few recent pickups....the batting helmet and Don Kelly BP jersey were acquired at TigerFest. The helmet came from the Foundation tent, there have been a number of #26's over the last 6-8 years, my best guess would be Mike Hessman in 2008. He only played in 12 games with just five on the road. Also added Carlos Guillen's JRD day jerseys from 2010. It is MLB authenticated and has a number of great dirt/grass stains. The final piece while mot game worn was too cool to pass up on eBay and will look great framed next to my Tiger jerseys.

What does the date wheel inside say?

Hessman only wore #26 in 2008, that style helmet was last used in 2006. If it was from 2006 that would have been Chris "Red Pop" Shelton. Check the date code on the inside of the helmet, there should be a wheel of numbers with an arrow pointing to the year and maybe even the month. Be sure to let us know what year it is from, I'd like to find out who's helmet you actually got.

When I got home last weekend I looked for a date code and didn't see one. I assumed that Rawlings did use them but I just found it hidden under the warning sticker. As you can see the arrow points to 4, there is a 9 to the left but the other number is a bit tricky with the glob of plastic. There is also a quarter sized MLB hologram with an 11 character code, is that significant at all? Thanks for your assistance.

Looks like 4 and 06 to me. I would say Chris Shelton used in 2006. Pretty cool item for $30...I think I was actually in the tent when you bought it. One of the interns was wearing it, right?

Yes that was me, it was the last helmet they had. I thought about Shelton but the wear is minimal. There are a few scuffs and a little pine tar that can be seen on the left side in my rear view photo. Perhaps he wore it after being called back up in September. Either way it was a great add for $30.

Great pickups Russ, I saw the intern wearing it too. I still say if Shelton hadn't gotten off to his hot start in 06, the tigers would have never had the season they had. Check inside the ear flap too, a lot of the road helmets got authenticated inside the ear flap & its easy to miss.

I was thinking 90 rather than 06. Doesn't the year stamp rotate with the arrow from month to month?

Just got back from Mexico and my Cabrera gloves finally arrived while I was gone. I got these gloves from one of the clubhouse guys for team Venezuela. I couldn't really find any info on the company other than Pelao is a Venezuelan company. Cabrera mostly uses Nike gloves, but I was able to get a photo of him wearing Pelao.

I think I have a match here guys, this would be my first. Just wanted to share with my fellow Tigers collectors. Guillens gu jersey from 7/26/08 vs. White Sox. The Tigers lost, but Carlos went 1-4 with a double and scored a run.

Looks pretty good. That along with the pinstripes it should be pretty easy to get a 100% match. Thanks for sharing.

Great stuff guys! I'm new to the boards and just getting into the game used stuff! I have a few game used tigers things, and am trying to focus on them, they are my favorite team. I'm slowly adding some inexpensive GU items and someday will move onto bigger things.

If anyone in the Tigers GU family can help me out, i'm looking to get some ST nameplates from Mark but (as expected) he won't reply to emails. It's a bit hard being overseas!

Please email if you can help.

Thanks,
Mark.
