Over dinner last night, my friends and I, who are all big sports fans, were talking and sharing sports stories over dinner. The discussion turned to unusual incidents at sports games, since my friend had been to the Cubs game when Shane Victorino had the beer porn on him. I'd like to hear some of your stories, and I'll add a few of my own.

1) During a Blackhawks game I attended some years ago, the power in the stadium went out and stayed out for some time.

2) During another Hawks game, this time vs. the Predators, Boris Mironov dumped the puck into the Preds zone, so that the Hawks could make a line change. Tomas Vokoun went behind the net, expecting the puck to stay along the glass. The puck insted deflected off the divider on the glass, and went straight into the net for a goal. I just started laughing, and even the announcer sounded confused.

And probably my favorite, I went to the 2006 Crown Royal 400, and had a blast, and during that race Kevin Lepage's car had an engine problem, and caught fire, thus ending the event for him. I've since purchased the driver's side door from that car! I will post a photo.http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v148/211/123/651655203/n651655203_1591500_5670.jpghttp://cache.gettyimages.com/xc/57547607.jpg?v=1&c=EWSAsset&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF1939847EC77F5F8D1CE8FEC54BF5DB382BA 50F1883A03CC3FAE

I seen a fan at an Oakland A's game catch foul balls on consecutive pitches. They were both fouled straight back into the second deck. I think the odds of that happening have to be pretty high.

Game at Yankee Stadium where some knucklehead kid jumped from the top tier, landing in the netting between home plate and the 1st baseline. Had the netting given way, he could have easily killed someone and perhaps himself.

My wife and I were directly behind home plate, a few rows back. We literally had a front row seat.

In the mid 80's at The Swamp in Gainesville, the Gators were playing Kentucky. I heard a plane approaching and thought it was one of those planes that trails an advertising banner behind it. All of a sudden, a WWII plane appears over the south end of the stadium, flies into the stadium, and then out over the north end zone. Scared the bejeezus out of me and about 85,000 other people. If I remember correctly, they tracked the plane back to Ocala and eventually took away his pilot's license.

HA! I was at that Yankee game where the kid fell onto the screen too. Too many $9 beers.

I saw Chris Morris break a backboard at the Meadowlands.

I saw Dock Ellis hit the first three Reds batters and throw at and behind the fourth and fifth, until he himself was thrown out of the game. I don't expect to see that again.

I was at an Islanders game a few years back when a guy spent a ton of money to propose to his girlfriend. He contacted the team, had the Jumbotron read "Our first date was at an Islanders game Will you marry me at this one" It was was an aww, that's romantic moment. The camera was turned to him on the Jumbotron, everyone is watching as he gets down on one knee......She laughs at him, says no and walks out of the stadium. I heard second hand (as this was waaaaaay more interesting than a late 90's Islanders game and everyone was talking about it) that she dumped him and had been cheating on him.

I figured she was just looking for a Rangers fan. :p

I was at the Browns game when the ref threw the flag that hit Orlando Brown in the eye. It was strange because at the game nobody could really tell how bad it was and just saw Brown go after the ref and attack him.

During Cards games there is the KISS CAM - a camera that is put onto couples who are supposed to smooch in front of the stadium.

I have been waiting for them to focus on a brother/sister or father/daugher - since it all seems totally random (though in conservative MO, you can bank on them NEVER showing two men - or two women kissing)

Anyway, there was this one mid-40's couple who you could tell had talked about what would happen if the KISS CAM zoomed in on them - and when it happened, they got a little dirty - like groping dirty for as long as it took the producers to find another couple and shut the camera down. I am willing to wager that she probably would have removed some clothing had they been allowed to continue.

I fully expect to see a flasher on the KISS CAM before I croak.

Speaking of the kiss cam, when I have attended games, I have seen it put on a couple of players. Not sure they saw it, but it's pretty funny. Not sure which stadium this was in, but it was either in Seattle or Arizona - probably in AZ.

I could list a book of these but will start with one: September night game at the real Comiskey Park, c. 1982. The scoreboard video camera takes random fan shots at various times during the game. During one half-inning respite, the camera zeroes in on two kids tthat were about 10-12 years old leaning on the wall in the front row of the box seats. Aware that they're now on camera for the whole stadium to see, the two rugrats proceed to insert their finger into their nostril up past the first knuckle!
Gross, but hilarious!

Speaking of the Kiss Cam, I forgot about this one. At another Hawks game, the Red Wings were in town, and the kiss cam zooms into a guy in a Wings jersey and a hot number next to him, she looks up, sees this, and kisses her boyfriend next to her ON THE OTHER SIDE, who is wearing a Hawks jersey! The crowd reaction was a loud cheer, and I just started laughing.

I was at a Twins Yankees game in 2001 when Knoblauch had just been moved to LF for NY. I think it was college/school ID night with really really cheap seats.; you could show up the day of a game and get the best seat in the house for a few bucks. There were tons of college guys were drunk out in left field seats and Chuck is probably the most hated former Twin in the franchises history. I saw a lot of stuff being thrown at him, but was too far away to see what it all was. I heard things like coins, batteries, golf balls, hot dogs, etc. They stopped the game twice. Bob Casey, the PA guy scolded the crowd and Tom Kelly, the manager, went out to leftfield to plea with the crowd to behave or the game would be called.

dfirest1,

Um......I certainly don't want to derail your nice fun post, or cause you any grief......but that door you purchased doesn't match up with the car in the fire. The only reason I'm pointing this out to you is so that you may take it up with whomever you bought it from if they represented this door as "the" one from "the" burning race car in the picture.

Look at the numbers and how they lay out with the white racing stripe coming off the bottom of the car (touches your "1", doesn't come close to the one on the car on fire)......the silver racing stripe and how it touches the top of the number one on the car on fire (and yours, where they don't touch at all).....or the little shield below the "1" (it's to the right of center on the fire car....to the left of center on the door you bought).

At least you have a nice door from a race car of his......just not the driver's side door from the car that burned. Sorry to break it to you, and I hope it doesn't take away any of your excitement about the piece. It shouldn't, your piece is still nice.

My best regards,

Steve

I was a huge mike tyson fan.And i was at the famous "bite" fight of tyson/holyfield ll.Even though being a tyson fan i call it "the payback" fight for all the headbutts holyfield was giving tyson. It was one of the best sporting events i have ever been at.It was the first tyson fight i had ever been at in person and only time i saw him fight in person. And even though i spent alot of money to attend it just to see him get dq'd.I still to this talk about the experence of being there.Man,that whole weekend was wild. But what a mob scene that was after the fight, there were so many fights in the stands. My section was just chaos. And the wildness didnt stop there cause as walking out to the mgm gun fire erupted as i was told by employee of the mgm that some people were trying to rob the mgm, hitting the lobby and then the high roller tables. The blackjack and poker tables were pushed over.People were running all over the place knocking people over. And it was very scary to be in it as things were close to a riot. And then i saw swat come in from the front doors by the lobby and then out threw the back doors of the back room of the front lobby desk and jumping on the counters. The streets in front of the mgm were nothing but police cars.I was taking pictures and had a police guy come and take my film from me.And they had to shut down the mgm.I was told it was the first time they had ever done that. But what was funny in the sports illustrated covering the story in the fight, they said it was champagne corks popping.Yeah i was there, and that was not corks. And i went to the newsstands the next morning to read what the heck happen for sure and there were no newspapers, which i just thought was odd.Anyway,i still have the collectibles i got from the fight.I still have the ticket and casino chip i bought. And the prize was a hat from team tyson. On the flight out there on the plane was a corner man from a fighter on the undercard and i became friends with him.And he got me backstage for the wieght-ins for the undercards and i got the hat.And during the wiegh-in for tyson/holyfield i was able to meet one of my all time favorites roy jones jr.That for sure was the most unusual sporting thing i have ever seen in person.:)

Sad day in Twins history. Displeasure toward a player for leaving happens, but to act out in childish methods like this leaves an indelible mark on the city...

I recall the Indians to a lesser degree. Upset because longtime fan favorite Jim Thome departed for Philadelphia via free agency, year s later returning to Cleveland as a White Sox player hurt Thome because if negative press etc and poor fan reaction. However, I don't recall fans doing anything idiotic like the Twins did... Knuckleheads.

It wasn't just displeasure about him leaving. Knoblauch was a first class A-hole his time in MN and demanded to be traded. Quite frankly I think he got what he deserved.

And no, that incident didn't leave a indelible mark on the city.

The oddest thing I ever saw at a Twins game was a woman (roughly age 22) and her daughter (roughly 4 years old) were sitting next to me. The girl stood up and walked over to her mom, standing directly infront and facing her mom. Her mom lifted up her shirt and the girl took a sip and sat back down. They did that a couple of times throughout the game. They are free to do what they want to do but I would have appreciated a heads up so I could make sure to look the other way.

I want to say it was September of 1995, but I could be off a bit. Cubs closer Randy Myers gives up a potential GWRBI home run to a Houston Astros player, after which a drunken fan, surprisingly from the first base box seats and not the bleachers, charges the mound with the intention of throwing a punch at Myers. Baaaaaad move...I was buddies with Myers, and knew some of his background, which included survivalist exercises. He laid out the fool with one punch. A guy would be a total idiot to take on Myers one-on-one while he was sober...doing it drunk...Moron City!

After going to Giants football games for almost 30 years now, I have seen some crazy stuff (most of it in the parking lot before and after games).

One time, before a playoff game vs the Vikings in January (single didget, maybe low teens temperatures), some guy was grilling in his back seat with a charcoal grill, flames up to the roof. His buddy was in the front seat laughing. I moved my car away form his.

I was at a Dodgers/Cubs Game in Chicago when a Dodgers fan caught a Cubs player HR ball. Raul Mondesi, not knowing it was a Dodgers fan that caught it, was in RF. The fan threw the ball back onto the field. Mondesi catches it and fires it back into the stands. Raul had a cannon, and I never heard what actually happened to the ball or where it went.

I was playing home runs on Waveland Avenue (fell on and claimed a Dante Bichette HR) during the 4-15-97 Cubs-Rockies tilt at Wrigley. Later in the game, Quinton McCracken hit one in the left centerfield bleachers, with a numbnuts fan throwing the ball back. The ball was picked up by Cubs CF Brian McRae, who angrily heaved it over the bleachers and into the back yard of what used to be the Budweiser building (called that because of a rooftop ad for Bud). Another Ballhawk retrieved it several minutes later after being guided to its location by several fans in the back of the bleachers.

jobathenut- I was at the Tyson vs. Holyfield "bite" as well and it was everything you described. I remember being totally confused about what Holyfield was jumping around about, until the bigscreen replayed the bites in between rounds. Before the fight, I was able to get baseballs signed by Floyd Mayweather Jr and Shannon Briggs, who were both spectators. Both were really nice and approachable, of course Mayweather hadn't made it big yet and it looks like the money may have changed him a bit...

Anyway, I was able to dig up one of the ticket stubs from the fight. I have the one my dad used somewhere around here It was an unbelievable spectacle and while the fight itself can't be ranked among the best ever, I doubt if I'll ever have an experience like that at a sporting event again.

reed-That was quite the experinece was'nt it? Yeah like i said,i still talk about it to this day.And people always want to know about it when they come over and see the ticket as i have it framed along with the poster and some other items.I even have the betting odds slip in there.I still have all the items i got including a media guide i got from a guy from a local newspaper i became freinds with.I could tak about the fight and that weekend for hours.I was able to meet (i should say see) alot of sports people and celebritys.I was into autographs,so i sat by the autographs hounds around the elevators at the mgm.And thats where i saw alot of them as they checked in.I saw donald trump, and i came up to him and shook his hand. And he said, "what can i do for you?".I said,"how about a million dollers".He was very friendly and laughed, and said," sorry i have it on the fight".I was able to get ken norton sr autograph as he did a signing at the mgm.And got my picture with him.I tired to get a autograh from his son,but he blew me off and kept walking, which i understand.I saw don king and there were way too many of his people around him to even get close. Also ran into sugar ray,as i was waiting for a cab at the mgm.And was able to get my picture with him. Then i over heard on the radio from the hounds that ozzy and manson and jenny mccarthy were at the hard rock.I also saw royce gracie from ufc fame.Yeah besides the outcome of the fight,it was a great time.As far as the bite, when holyfield first jumped i said to the people around me asking what just happen.I said tyson just bite him and they didnt believe me.And then he did it again and the place went nuts.:)

jobathenut- It was an unbelievable experience, although it seems like you were much more active than I was. Actually, following the fight, we were stuck in the walkway between the arena and the hotel/casino for hours, due to the "riot" you decribed in your initial post. We heard from MGM Grand officials that the gun shots were actually champagne corks popping, but the word circulating around the casino, once we finally made it there, was exactly what you described...

There were TONS of athletes/celebs at that event. I recall seeing Barkley, Ewing, Mourning and Mutombo, Ricky Watters, Albert Belle, Ted Danson, Frank Thomas, Trump, etc, etc... I only had three baseballs with me and I got them signed almost as soon as we got into the arena by Mayweather, Briggs and Thomas Hearns (whom I forgot to mention in my last post). Not only was it an amazing experience, but it was really cool going with my dad. He actually got the tickets from an MGM executive, free of charge and the seats were amazing. Darrell Walker, formerly of the Knicks, was actually seated a row in front of us.

Out of curiosity, we called a local ticket broker, a few hours before the fight and were offered $10K a piece for the tickets. We would have never sold them, as they were given to us, but the prefight buzz was almost as electric as the fight and subsequent shananigans were afterward. I'll never forget it!

I was at a Yankees Vs. Angels game and saw David Justice served with papers on the field after a fly out. The process server just ran onto the field and thrust papers at him. Justice put his arms in the air and the papers fell to the ground and security was all over the guy. I said to my friend, man if I didn't know any better I would say that he was just served. Sure enough, next day in the LA Times there it was. I guess he gave his ex girlfriend the boot and she was suing him.

Yankee Stadium, 1977, maybe '78...

Guy sitting in the upper deck with a 5 or 6 foot tall paper bag, filled with stale bagels. He started throwing them one by one off the upper deck. He must have had 150? bagels in the bag.

I've held this one off as it sounds like I'm tooting my own horn as I was the center figure here, but, what the heck!

April 1994, Astros-Cubs at Wrigley Field, and Craig Biggio puts a ball striaght down the line that lands near an older couple who can't locate it. The old Family Section was less than half-full that game, so I ran over from the other end, and located the ball. Thinking it was a foul ball, I gave it to the old man, and then realized it was a home run. Of course, the bleacher imbeciles start urging the old guy to throw it back, and he begins to get a little intimidated (becuase the top row is empty except for the three of us, the whole scenario is in plain view of the entire park). I urge the man not to throw it back, and dash back to my ballpark bag at my seat. I pull out 2 BP baseballs I caught that day, and offered to trade them for the home run. He and his wife were delighted, as they had 2 grandkids at home, and now each would have their own baseball. When the crowd saw me trade with them and head back to my end of the row, hearty applause broke out. The weird part, though, is virtually no one started chanting for ME to throw the home run back..that totally floored me.

Reed-Yeah it was even crazier after the fight. Those like i said were not champagne corks popping there.I saw police having guys on the grouind with handcuffs on them.I don't know if they were involved in the shooting or robbery of the casino. And i saw bullet holes in the glass by the newsstand by the elevators in the mgm.The next morning when i went there to buy a paper the glass had been replaced already. You are right there sure were alot of stars there. As like you said there was a electric feel the whole weekend for this fight. So you also saw trump, thats great. That's great you were able to share this with you dad.Me and my dad were huge tyson fans. But he was'nt able to come with me to the fight. And with what i caught myself in after the fight in the arena and in the casino i am glad he was'nt with me.But before the fight i sure wanted him to be.I remember getting back to my hotel room after they closed the mgm.And calling my dad just shaking, and telling him about it.Yeah, tickets were being resold for high bucks.I am in the ticket broker buisness so i knew some people that were there. And they were telling me the prices they were getting.I was getting offers the whole weekend for my ticket.I got a aoffer for the same as you like 10k for the ticket. As lower levels were going for that. And ringside were going for like 30k.And then after the fight there were people outside the arena in the casino buying ticket stubs after the fight. And got a offer of $500 for it.But i wanted to keep it and im glad i did.:)

Speaking of the kiss cam, when I have attended games, I have seen it put on a couple of players. Not sure they saw it, but it's pretty funny. Not sure which stadium this was in, but it was either in Seattle or Arizona - probably in AZ.

They do do that frequently at DBacks home games. I can't remember the team involved, but several years ago, they zoomed in on a player and what looked like a coach, standing at the dugout railing, and the coach did - at least apparently - give the player a big smooch.

This is more of an in-game blooper than an "event", but a couple of years ago, I witnessed what had to be one of the worst plays I've ever seen in a professional Baseball game, and it was pretty memorable.

It was an Arizona Fall League game, and the pitcher, seeing the runner on first starting to take off, turned and threw to first; the young first baseman - a Mets prospect, if I recall correctly - thought he was just taking a routine hold toss, assumed the runner was still standing on the bag behind him, and nonchalantly turned to the bag to tag him...at the same moment that the runner was sliding into second. The entire crowd let out a loud, pained, collective "Ewwwwww!!!"

I was at the Cleveland Browns game about 6-8 years ago when the refs blew a call late in the game and everyone started throwing their beer bottles onto the field. Literally thousands of beers being wasted. The opposing team had to leave the field so as not to get blasted by the suds. I believe they were playing Jacksonville. I just sat there thinking of all that wasted money and beer. Oh well, we Cleveland fans always think we're in a playoff chase nomatter what our record is!! lol

My first game working for the Dodgers ended in an unusual way. It was baseball giveaway night, and the people in the stands started to throw the baseballs onto the field in protest of some blown calls. The game ended in a forfeit.

Kind Regards,

Ron.

I wasn't there, but if you want to talk "unusual", how about Disco Demolition Night at Old Comiskey Park 30 years ago? The between games ceremonies (it was a twi-night doubleheader) had Steve Dahl, then what was considered a shock jock (very tame to Howard Stern today, though) burning disco records contributed by fans. The fans took over though, the field was stormed by younger fans, many of who were drunk, high, or both, and the field was rendered unplayable, causing a second game forfeit for the Sox. Yes, it was the brain child of Hall of Fame owner Bill Veeck, but, unlike most of his wild promotions, this one badly backfired.
