I've received several questions about the following jersey currently offered in the Vintage Authentics auction:

"2008 Indians game worn Victor Martinez jersey, Lampson grade 8.5"

Lou may want to take a quick 15 second look at Getty or photos from 2007 and 2008, showing the names on the back of the Indians jerseys. The Tribe switched from the offered "3-D/Shadow" style to traditional block lettering in 2008. The shirt in question is pre-2008.

Yet another fine job of authenticating by Sweet Lou!

Here is a shot of Grady Sizemore from 2008 in his blue jersey-note the block lettering on the name, not the 3-D/shadow style as worn pre-2008 and as found on the "2008" Martinez jersey that Lampson graded an 8.5:

So is the jersey bad all together, or has Lou made a "mistake" (I use the term very loosely) and the jersey is more recent, but still game used? Ricardo

Ricardo-

Great question!

I suggest you ask Lampson and let us know what he says.

Well Howard, maybe I should practice for Lou by going after Bin Laden, then, and only then, can I hope to have honed by skills enough to find the ever elusive Mr. Lampson......:D

dont authenticator have examplar photos that they are suppose to use to compare stuff to like JSA has for photographs. I hear JSA has thousands of examplar that they have in their database.

anyone ever ask a game use authenticator how they come up with their conclusion that they are authentic.

lou came to mind when i read this story:

http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2009/07/30/fake-scent-tracking-dog-sends-man-to-prison-for-life/

substitute preston for any of the auction houses that employ 'ol lou and "harass 2" for lou himself. even the part about "urinating on evidence" seems to fit in a metaphorical sense.

hi rick,

i am assuming that people ask question when they submit an item to be authenticated such as their process of authenticating an item. maybe i am naive and people just trust that they will do their best. like in this example, how could this be missed if they had exemplars. i assume that people ask questions when their item comes back unauthentic. it just seems that bad item get authenticated all the time and then its up to the buyer to prove that the item is not what the COA claims it to be.

I'm completely on-board with you. My previous post was an attempt (emphasis on attempt) at irony e.g. if every collector had your common sense, the house of cards we call the memorabilia industry would collapse overnight.

Below is a photo of 2, 2008 gamers I picked-up. Notice the block letters for the names, as it should be. The 3-D/shadow was last used in 2007. Not sure how Lampson classified the Martinez as a 2008, but a 2 second search on Getty would have confirmed this.

Both shirts are available-email me if interested.

Steve-

The jersey is one of the best Sizemore's I've seen. Tons of use, size 48.

Thanks.

They're probably BOTH hiding in the upper deck at PNC Park.
