i am expanding my collecting habits to include these helmets. what do i have to look for to get an authentic gamer and not get ripped off with a fake?
what are the telltale signs of a real one?

Are you looking for NFL or College? I am an Ohio State fan and collector and have two OSU Helmets in my collection. I believe both are real, but one has been reconditioned and the other the Buckeye Leaves were removed at the end of the season and replaced with fake ones to make it look complete.

From my personal observations and knowledge, I'll be happy to share what I can about OSU helmets, what to look for etc. Feel free to IM or e-mail me.

The official helmet of the NFL is Riddell. Some players do wear other helmet brands such as (ex. Schutt). If this is the case then any labeling with Schutt has to be removed.

For vintage gamers, if the inside padding says PAC 44, it was never worn by an NFL player.

i am looking at nfl. there are a couple of dolphins lids on ebay, and with my little knowledge of football, i say they look good. so the experts here let me know as one lid ends today.
