I'm pretty sure the L stands for having a larger knob

Kyle is correct. The L designation knob (Ruth Knob) is approximately 2" by 5/8", which is larger than the 'regular' knob (Hornsby knob) which is approximately 1 5/8" by 1/2".

If I recall correctly, someone said this "L" is for Long.
