As usual, an interesting post by Dave Grob on the MEARS forum:

While it is always good to see that people see value in your service and product line, I would have to take exception with the old adage that “imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.” The incident involves a person or persons affixing the MEARS name to an altered letter in order to help them sell a LeBron James jersey on E-Bay. While most parties involved have been content to deal with this as an E-Bay complaint, I am not.

This week I plan to contact some people I know in the area and begin working on getting this information (which includes the names of the person or persons involved) to the FBI. This is not simply a matter for E-Bay, as this is fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. In addition, since the product and letter where sent through the mail, it may also involve the Postal Inspection Branch of the US Post Office as well.

My message is simple, don’t do this with our name and product line. In addition to this issue, I will also be asking for guidance from these same Federal Agencies on how we should treat items that are submitted to us that we feel have been purposely altered or doctored with the intent of defrauding a bidder or buyer.
