Team,

In the new Sotheby's SCP Auction they have listed a game used 1973 green Oakland A's Reggie Jackson jersey. They list the jersey as "all original" lettering and number. Also at the end of the listing they mention it comes with a LOA from MEARS and have question marks behind MEARS.

I emailed Troy at MEARS and advised him of the SCP Auction and that the lettering in "JACKSON" is not the correct font for A's jerseys 1972 to 1976. This is the very exact same style of incorrect font that was on a 1974 white Reggie Jackson that was listed in a recent Mastronet Auction. This white Reggie A's jersey was also accompanied with a LOA from MEARS. When that auction was posted I notified Troy and he stated that Dave Bushing was in Chicago and would stop over to look at the jersey. Troy emailed me back within three days and stated Dave agreed with my assessment and reduced the MEARS number by two.

I will update this thread when Troy gets back to me. I am not pointing any fingers here and saying any auction house or MEARS is out to rip someone off. That is not the case. I just want MEARS to agree or disagree with my assessment.

I have dealt with Troy at MEARS and SCP Auctions. They have both been very, very professional in the past and I am sure both organizations just want to get this right. I will inform SCP that I have contacted Troy and fill them in on my assessment.

Stay tuned.

It appears as maybe SCP mistakenly put the MEARS name behind the entry on their website, but not their catalog.

Troy's quick response is posted here.....

Mark,

As always, your input on A's jerseys is both appreciated and welcomed. In
this instance, we DID NOT look at that jersey in the auction.

As per our policy, only items examined by us should have MEARS listed in lot
description on both the internet and catalog. I am not sure if there are
items that list us that we have not looked at yet, but I will bring this to
the attention of SCP.

Here is the post that I placed on the MEARS bulletin board and I ask that
you consider posting it on the gu site.

There has been a question regarding lot #421, Reggie Jackson Oakland A's
1973 jersey which appears in the current Sotheby's auction. In the catalog,
MEARS is not listed at the end of the lot description as authenticators.

In the beginning of the catalog, we are listed as MEARS, when appropriate,
as being the authenticators. This means we only looked at the item where our
name appears in the lot descriptions. Only in those instances did we examine
a jersey or bat.

If you have a question regarding a specific lot in the Sotheby's auction,
ask for the hologram number, the worksheet, and the final Letter of Opinion.
Or, direct questions directly to me at troy@mearsonline.com ."

Finally, again thanks for keeping an eye on A's jerseys and if you would
ever like to add your jerseys to the MEARS museum collection, similar to the
Duke Hott collection, for all collectors to see, you are always welcome. We
will provide the graphic artists. Call me if you need, 414 828 9990
