Looked good at first but jersey was made in 1991 not 1990 as per the Rawlings tag. Also no set or year number tag.

Thoughts ?

Just from memory, the shirt looked a bit off to me so I went and looked at Topps baseball cards from 1991 and 1992.

Based on what I could find, the yellow stripes on the sleeves and in the piping in the collar looks too thick vis-a-vis the black stripes/piping. Just too much yellow, it would seem.

In addition, the spacing between the letters on the front spelling "Pirates" looks a bit too wide.

Guys,

It's not the first time a Pirates home jersey with the "ultra thick" yellow stripe has come up on the forum before. Please check the following thread for some very informative commentary...

- alou was drafted by the pirates in '86. from '86-'90 he steadily made his way up the minor league ladder and finally made his major league debut with the pirates on july 26, 1990. on august 16, 1990 he was traded to montreal. he played in a total of 2 games for pittsburgh.

- the pirates wore this pullover style from 1980-1990. after 1990, they switched to wearing button-downs.

- the rawlings tag on the ebay jersey is from 1992-94. this style of tag isn't often seen because in '92 rawlings lost the MLB contract to russell and thus in '92 most teams wore russell. however, a few teams continued to wear rawlings in '92 and this is the tag they had then.

- the sleeve trim doesn't concern me but the neck trim does. here is a photo of alou playing for pittsburgh in 1990 and a photo of neal heaton in 1990:

- the placement of the rawlings logo is also an issue. on all of the photos of the 1990 pirates i looked at, the rawlings tag was placed directly on the black portion of the sleeve trim itself.

anyway, here's an oddity. it's a photo from a 1990 rookie card of alou:

the odd part is that the jersey has the "RSC" patch which was only worn in 1988 for the death of pittsburgh mayor richard s. caliguiri. here is a 1988 john smiley shirt with the RSC patch:

i can only assume that the 1990 photo is of alou in minor league action and the shirt was a hand-me-down from the majors. the "RSC" patch would've been very difficult to remove given that they were heat-pressed and not sewn.

i guess the two biggest issues with the alou jersey are the 1992-94 style tag on a 1980-1990 style pullover and the odd neckline trim. my opinion is that it's likely to be a minor-league shirt and it isn't from 1990.

rudy.

Great information and detective work Kingjammy 24.

Just to clarify my earlier statement on the sleeve trim, it's not the absolute thickness of the yellow stripe but rather the thickness relative to the thickness of the black stripes that looks off to me.

The black ones still look too thin to me relative to the Topps cards and the pictures you posted (as well as the ones posted in the prior thread). But at this juncture, I have been looking at them so intently that I am getting a headache and it could be an optical illusion.

had it buy it now for 150 and it sold for a tad over 200. People dont bother to do re-search OR buy it in denial and hope to pass it off as a real rookie gamer.
