Walter Johnson Jersey Highlights Sports Auction at Sotheby's
April 20 (Bloomberg) -- One of two known Washington Senators' jerseys worn by Hall-of-Fame pitcher Walter Johnson will be auctioned by Sotheby's Holdings Inc. in June.
The road jersey, which was held by a former teammate of Johnson for 80 years, probably will bring in as much as $300,000, the auction house said in a news release.
The only other jersey known to have been worn by Johnson, known as the ``Big Train,'' is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
Johnson, a two-time Most Valuable Player, was a member of the first Hall of Fame class after finishing his 21-year career with 3,508 strikeouts and 417 wins. His strikeout record stood for 61 years until broken by Steve Carlton in 1983.
The auction also will feature home-run king Hank Aaron's rookie jersey from the 1954 season with the Milwaukee Braves and a Babe Ruth autographed game-used bat. Aaron's jersey likely will fetch $250,000, while Ruth's bat probably will go for as much as $200,000, the auction house said.
The sale of baseball, basketball and other sports memorabilia is scheduled for June 24, Sotheby's said.
