This was the final question on Jeopardy tonight!

It is the only Major League Baseball team whose first four letters of their name matches the first four letters of the city they play in???

Anyone know???

I went through every team I could think of and yelled out "The Philadelphia Phillies!" while my wife was sleeping and I get hit in the face with a pillow. I'm with Sean Connery. Damn you Alex Trabek

Here's a better question... and I gave this question - and the answer - in another post here about 2-3 weeks ago or so...

Who is the ONLY player to be an CURRENT Member of the 3,000 hit club when he was wearing Yankees Pinstripes?

xpress34
02-25-2009, 10:05 PM
In case I worded that poorly...

What former player was already a member of the 3000 hit club when he donned Yankees Pinstripes?

Hints & Trivia -

NO Yankee has EVER had 3,000 hits (a few players who are 3,000 hit club members did play for the Yanks during their careers)

ONLY one person (the answer to the question) has ever worn Yankees Pinstripes as a member of the 3,000 hit club - in other words he had 3,000 hits before joining the Yankees.

This person had a total of 1 hit in 7 ab over 10 games over 2 seasons with the Yankees.

TFig is the winnner! Sorry Nate - he beat you to the punch...

I brought this up on the Jeter - HOF worthy? thread...

It just makes what Jeter has done in NY even more amazing as (barring an injury) he will become the 1st Yankee to join the 3,000 hit club - and he will do it as a 'pure' Yankee... rookie year and 1st hit to 3,000 hit...

ndevlin

Ive got an easy one....

What person or persons are in the Baseball Hall of Fame AND Football Hall of Fame? And what for?

If Captain Lou didnt get sick, he would have easily had 3,000 hits, and probably still have the record right now, and for quite some time.

Here's another one for you to ponder - and one of my FAVORITE Baseball Trivia questions... it's a two part one...

Who are the 1st 300 win club starter and 300 save club closer to appear in the same MLB game together for the same team?

When this feat happened, what made the event even more memorable?

- Chris

xpress34
02-25-2009, 10:22 PM
And just for grins, since this happened I believe only 3 maybe 4 pairs of 300w/300s pitchers have appeared in the same game together for the same team...

Bonus Points if you can name any of those tandems...

I agree on that 2721 hits... he averaged 204 hits a season... 2 more seasons and he would have been there...

ndevlin
02-25-2009, 10:42 PM
Yeah, and I can almost bet he wouldve played for another 5 yrs. Not to mention his HR total of 500+. Heck, probably 600+

Without a doubt...

Any guesses on my 300w/300s question yet?

ndevlin
02-25-2009, 10:54 PM
Umm, my first guess would be Clemens and Wagner. But I dont think they were teammates at that time.

Clemens and Franco? They were teammates, but I dunno if they played in the same game

ndevlin
02-25-2009, 10:55 PM
No wait, Clemens played with the Yankees, Franco with the Mets.

Ahh, I dunno. Im guessing it might have something to do with Nolan Ryan

ndevlin
02-25-2009, 10:56 PM
Or I guess Clemens and Rivera too....

Here's a good one:

Name the 2 sets of brothers to have hit over 500 home runs combined.

ndevlin
02-25-2009, 11:08 PM
If it was Gossage, then it would have been with Ryan in 91. But wouldnt it be Clemens and Rivera at some point too?

xpress34
02-25-2009, 11:12 PM
You were close with Clemens and Franco - they were the 2nd pairing during Franco's brief stint with the Astros in April 2005 - 14 years later!

And YES, it does involve Nolan.

In June 1991 Nolan started and WON his 308th Career Victory. In that game, Goose Gossage (who had not saved a game in over 2 years at that point) came in and got the SAVE - his 308th Career Save. #308 and #308 in the same game!!!

There is actually a card commemorating the event in the 1992 Donruss set.

In fact, it inspired me to do this (as far as I know) ONE OF A KIND Ball:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v738/xpress34/Memorabilia/Balls/RyanGossage308Ball1.jpg

And for the record I believe the other tandems to do 300w/300s would be:

Clemens/Rivera (after Clemens went back to NYY) making Clemens the only one to do it twice with two different teams (Both Leagues as a matter of fact!) and with two different relievers.

The other would be Greg Maddux w/ Trevor Hoffman during Maddux's SD tenure...

Here's a good one:

Name the 2 sets of brothers to have hit over 500 home runs combined.

Not the Ripken boys - 451 combined

Not the Waner bros - 140 combined

Not even the Canseco's! Jose had 462 - Ozzie had a GOOSE EGG!

Not the Alomar's either - 332 total

The Giambi's are close at 448

The Aaron's - Hank and Tommie combined for 760 w/ Tommie's 5 HR's...

I can't figure the other pair... and I hate giving up!!!

If Jason can stay healthy for a couple or three more years, he might get he and his brother in that club - without either one having hit 500 by themselves!!!

I'm guessing a typo for you too... you mean 444??? If there other brother Cloyd had been a hitter rather than a pitcher, they might have made it as a trio!!!

Speaking of trios, the Molina brothers may be the most amazing family of catchers ever, but there combined 167 HRs leaves a lot to be desired!

Who was the first player, to play for all 4 current and former New York Teams?

The Straw?

Darryl Strawberry

ndevlin

No its someone from the 50's and 60's. Thats a tough one. I came up with Zimmer and Neal, but thats not right. They are both missing a team.

suave1477
02-26-2009, 12:42 AM
Xpress You got it!!!

My Boy Strawberry

Tons of Trivia on him

He is also the first player to win 2 world series rings from both current New York Teams. The only other one after him was Doc Gooden

He is the only ever Co Winner HR Derby Champ and Joyner Co Winner - 1986

Still till this day holds the Mets Record for the most:
Home Runs
RBI'S
Runs
Extra Base hits
Walks
Intentional Walks
Strike Outs

ndevlin
02-26-2009, 12:48 AM

Strawberry played for:
Mets
Dodgers
Giants
Yankees

ndevlin
02-26-2009, 12:52 AM
Ohhhh, gotcha.

I thought you were asking who played for Brooklyn, NY Mets, NY Yankees, NY Giants.

Brooklyn and NY Giants being former. Yankees/Mets being current.

Honestly, I was pretty close to coming up with one:-)

suave1477
02-26-2009, 12:57 AM
Actually no on else did it before Starwberry while all 4 teams were in new York mets didnt exist until after the Dodgers and Giants left

ndevlin
02-26-2009, 01:02 AM
True, but if you were to play for the Dodgers in 56, the Giants in 57, the Yankees 58-61, and the Mets 62-63.

8 yr career covering all 4 teams. It was possible. Thats why I was throwing out players like Zimmer and Neal.

suave1477
02-26-2009, 01:06 AM
Thats possible, but no one did all 4 teams till the Straw man lol lol

New Question:

Only THREE HOFers have ever gone on to eventually hold the position of Team President.

Nolan Ryan is the latest.

Can you name the other two? And the teams?

Ken -

Nice guess, but you still need to go back a bit further...

The last HOFer to become a Team President prior to Ryan was 'Big Six' - Christy Mathewson who became President of the Boston Braves in 1923 and 1925...

But there is still one more...

Anyone?
