Gil McDougald Jersey Size

Can anybody provide insight into what size(s) jersey Gil McDougal wore during his career? Reason I am asking is that there is currently a size 40 jersey of his from 1956 on ebay......

.....however, in the Grey Flannel Holiday Auction ending last December, there was a size 44 jersey attributed to him from 1955.

While different jersey sizes during a career don't surprise me, I am a bit surprised to see such a differential one year apart. Just wondering if anybody can provide some insight.

Many vintage Wison jerseys measure much larger than the indicated size. Wilson used metric sizing during this era. Basically a size 40 would measure to a 44.
