View Full Version : Game Model vs. Game Issued Fielder's Gloves

Since I like looking at fielder's gloves, I have the habit of typing "game glove" into the eBay search bar. The results often mention game-model gloves, such as the following:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ALEX-RODRIGUEZ-SIGNED-AUTO-GAME-MODEL-GLOVE-AROD-YANKEE_W0QQitemZ250333045905QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_ DefaultDomain_0?hash=item250333045905&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A16%7C39%3A2%7C240%3A1318

http://cgi.ebay.com/DEREK-JETER-Signed-Game-Model-Glove-STEINER-YANKEES_W0QQitemZ120308892101QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH _DefaultDomain_0?hash=item120308892101&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A16%7C39%3A2%7C240%3A1318

In response to a question I asked the other day, someone told me that "Game Model" is just a fancy word for store bought. However, in the following auction for a "Game Model" Ryan Howard glove, it says that only his agent can order them. Would this be considered a "store bought" glove?

http://cgi.ebay.com/RYAN-HOWARD-AUTO-GAME-MODEL-FIRST-BASEMAN-MITT-PSA_W0QQitemZ320320245679QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_Def aultDomain_0?hash=item320320245679&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A2%7C 240%3A1318

Can someone please distinguish what makes these "game model" and not "game issued" gloves?

Thanks for your help!

game issued means it was actually made for and sent to the player. game model is just the same model that they use.

yes, that ryan howard glove would be considered a retail glove.

go here and make your very own "ryan howard glove":

http://www.rawlings.com/customglove/

it's the same model that albert pujols uses - heart of the hide PROAP5 / PROCMHCB2. rawlings will be more than happy to custom-build you one, down to every single aspect. you can pick any color, etc and they'll even stitch in any name you want, like "ryan howard". you can even pick the embroidery color. here's the stock model:

http://www.rawlingsgear.com/baseball/baseball-gloves/PROCMHCB2.html?s1=PF&s2=DF&s3=PROCMHCB2

don't worry, when you order one rawlings won't ask if you're really ryan howard's agent.

Rudy,

That is absolutely sick; I'd love to have one of those, but with "Frik" written in. However, if I were to go with the MLB player route, I would get the following notice:

*** Rawlings reserves the right to refuse terms that are derogatory or inappropriate in nature. MLB team and player names are prohibited.

So am I not allowed to customize a glove with, say, Ryan Howard's name? Can I buy one at the local sporting goods store for kicks? Or are they not available to me at all with Howard's name written in?

Still confused...

guess that kinda sucks if your real name really is ryan howard.

anyway, there are a myriad of shops and services out there that'll happily embroider any name you want. that model is readily available everywhere, including ebay. snag one up and then find a local place to stitch in "ryan howard". here's one place: http://www.thesportsdoctor.com/embro.html

now, all of that said, i'm sure there must be some subtle differences between a genuine ryan howard game-issued glove (one that rawlings made for him, per his specs, and sent to him for MLB use) and simply one of his stock models available via retail channels. i'm not a glove expert so i don't know what those subtle clues are. i know rawlings implements little things to differentiate genuine player-issued gloves from retail models.

look at all the fun you can have:

http://www.customglove.com/rawlings.html

that place doesn't seem to have any disclaimers against player names and they carry the pujols model as well as a ton of other rawlings player models and gloves from other manufacturers like SSK.

Frik,

I've got a few custom gloves (two infield, one outfield) made via the link that Rudy provided. I used them at the Vero Beach Dodger fantasy camp I went to in January and also in the league I play in. Since I was going to live out my baseball fantasy, why not take the field with my own custom gloves? I wasn't questioned about the name I wanted on the gloves when I ordered them. Apparently, there are no Major Leaguers with my name! :D

Try to contact Bob Clevenhagen at Rawlings. He might be able to help you with any differences between a game model vs. game issued Ryan Howard glove.

Kind Regards,

Ron.

i need clarification. is the game model glove the exact model that arod uses? i know he uses a black glove now as a yankee. i am not a glove expert but i know i cannot afford a game used yankee glove so this may be an alternative down the line.

Any glove experts out there? Because mannyramirezauthentic claims the following about his A-Rod glove:

"This glove is an exact model of the Glove AROD uses in the field while playing for the NY Yankees".

That picture was actually from a while ago; I am almost 24 now. Below it, I indicate that it was taken when I was thirteen. I should probably make things a bit more clear. Who's the forum's other woman?

Off the forum, someone told me to contact Denny Eskin. Anyone have his phone # or email?

Okay, so I find the following on eBay, which I really like: http://cgi.ebay.com/KENNY-LOFTON-GAME-ISSUE-USED-HEART-OF-THE-HIDE-GLOVE_W0QQitemZ190277387902QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_D efaultDomain_0?hash=item190277387902&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318. How do I know that this glove is legitimately game issued, and is not a game model glove?

Does anyone have Bob Clevenhagen at Rawlings contact information? I would like to talk to him about a glove.

I know that ebay seller bought that glove from Clevenhagen. Whether Lofton ever had the glove in his possesion I don't know.

Can anyone help me out here? I have not been able to find Denny Esken's contact information, nor do I know much about Clevenhagen. Any help you can provide on how to tell game-issued gloves from game-model gloves would be greatly appreciated.

Rob,

I apologize if my posting led another member to post unauthorized contact information for Denny Esken; I'm not in a place where I can make a prolonged phone call, so I didn't get the number off the GUU site anyway. Denny, since apparently you do read this board, can you contact me at lazukor@gmail.com? I would love to set up a time to chat about game used vs. game issued vs. game model. Thanks for your help, and I am sorry if I have caused anyone to unethically post private information. :o

I talked with Denny Esken, and he was very helpful in answering my questions. Here is what he said:

Game model = The glove that is the same as the players use but is never given to them for use. Such a glove is ordered often by agents or Steiner for signings.

Game issued = A glove that is made to the player's specifications and given to him for use. However, it was never used in a game.

Game model gloves are not simply retail gloves. You cannot just walk into a sporting goods store and pick out or order a glove with a player's name on it; it has to be special ordered from a player's agent.

I hope this explanation clarifies things.
