Ok, so Kyle's post got me thinking about my favorite addition to my collection this year. For me it is probably my game used Grady Sizemore complete TBTC uniform from MLB auctions. What is your favorite purchase this year?

There were MANY. If I had to narrow it down to 1...I'd say full 1973 home SF Giants Dave Kingman unaltered uniform would be tops...

I as well have had quite a few, but I will narrow it down.

First a 1966 Cubs Home Flannel worn by Bill Hands. He was my mothers favorite player when she was younger...she said he was so dreamy :) I had to own it, and thanks to Rob Steinmetz I do. I realize it is in a locker with a few Santo items, but I dont have any other Hands items, and by no means can I afford a Santo jersey, so for now it is a 1960's display ;)

The other would have to be my Soriano collection. I picked all the items up within 2 weeks of each other. All from 2007 - Jersey, home & road hats, bat & cleats.

Well I am sure if you ask me again in a month it will be something else, as I have picked up more stuff this year than ever before.

Thanks to all who have helped me with building the beggining stages of my Cubs locker room.

Last but not least...someone PLEASE find me a Sutcliffe Cubs gamer :)

Mine would be tough as I completed a goal of obtaining every "Angels" font type across the front of the jersey this year and obtained GU caps that match the jersey style (picked up some big names too). However, this Nov and Dec, I was able to pick up some GU items of my favorite player - Troy Percival. Not just one, but three (or four if you count pants). A 2008 TBTC Rays uniform, a 2007 Cardinals jersey and a 2005 Tigers jersey. Thanks go to Jake, Jeff Scott and Bill (ironmanfan).

My favorite addition to my non-game used collection this year is a hand written letter from Vin Scully on his Dodgers stationary thanking me for a picture I sent to him. It was an original Barney Stein (photographer, Brooklyn Dodgers) photo of him and Pee Wee Reese. I was going to keep it, but I figured that it would be better served in Scully's possession for him to remember the Brooklyn days. I'm a Dodgers fan and have been listening to Scully call the games since I was a kid. Thank goodness we get the Prime Ticket (Fox) Southern California feed here in Hawaii.

Kind Regards,

Ron.

I have two major pick ups of 2008. The first is a 1926 yankee signed baseball. The autographs include Babe Ruth,Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri and a very faded Miller Huggins.

My second pick up is a Jose reyes game worn 2007 jersey. It was used in tom Glavines 300th win game. I have also photo-matched to him hitting a home run. This jersey shows great use.

Like most others have said on this thread, I have added a few pieces this year. My two favorites are my long awaited 1982 Gary Carter Expos jersey. Actually, all the game used stuff in the Carter display is from this year except the hat. I got a great 1977-79 L/S from Tim at HOF bats and a killer 1986 Adirondack from Andy Fogel.
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k271/Kid4hof03/S5000626.jpg?t=1229438538

The second photo is a 1996 game used World Series jersey from Andy Fox. The hat is also a gamer but not from the series. Thanks go George for these!
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k271/Kid4hof03/S5000627.jpg?t=1229438727

I have one more jersey that I'm still waiting to arrive, that one might be in a tie with the Fox, but nothing will suplant the Carter.

joelsabi -

Walmart 5 shelf bookshelf natural or black mearures 19 1/2 X 72

Do not put in the upper shelf, and use that part to hang a jersey. That part measures (the inside) 28 1/2 X 39. To hang the jersey I have been using hangers, but now that thegoalie has posted I will be borrowing his idea :) thanks!!

As you can see more than enough room for a jersey, bat glove, cleats 8 X 10 photo etc.

Also you can choose to add plexiglass as I have on the Dawson, and now that I see how easy & cheap it is will be doing for all the rest of my "lockers" (if you are only buying one you will need to buy a 36 x 48 and cut down) (if you are going to need 5 or more you can special order a 5 pack which will be a lot cheaper and 32 X 40 - so not as much waste)

All you need to buy is velcro and put it in all 4 corners and in the middle on the top & bottom. This way you can remove the plexiglass when you want to add something.

Cost = CHEAP!! Shelf = $27.00 / Plexiglass = $15.00 / Velcro = $17.00 a roll (you can do 10 of these with one 15ft roll)

Total per unit = appx $45.00 + tax

Time = 45 minutes per
Look = AWESOME - (well not as cool as harpts - but works for me)

If interested in seeing a different view (from farther back) view the thread Display Cases and see page 5

Thanks for the compliment!!

Over the years I would say there are 4 that really stand out as far as additions….
1st is one from Jay Buhner, over the years he has been a great supporter of CFF and we have had lots of opportunities to chat and get to know each other…this personalized jersey and home run bat will go to me to the grave….
http://www.friendsofcff.com/images/baseball/the_hall/P1010951.JPG
http://www.friendsofcff.com/images/baseball/jayjer3.JPG
Next would be Brian Holman, he is a class act and what an arm he had! The jersey he gifted me hangs proudly in my office!
http://www.friendsofcff.com/images/baseball/holman/DSC04109.JPG
Raul Ibanez, great bat, great fielder and great person….was the CFF-M’s golf tournament host for many years. Raul has signed several items for my personal collection as well as chatted with me on the field to teach me even more about the game. We wish him well and Philly, love to see him get a NL pennant!
http://www.friendsofcff.com/images/baseball/raul_felix/IMG_1940.JPG
And finally would be Mike Morse, great man with a ton of potential and I look forward to watching him play. Next M’s-CFF golf tournament host?

Would have to be the John Stearns collection from Mears, including 83 Blue Alternate Jersey and 80 pants (to match my 80 Jersey) and both catching and batting helmet, a LS P72 and a pair of stirrups for good measure. HMMMMMMM, gotta get me one of those Lockers!

That, and the 94 Hundley Home Jersey. Love that jersey!

For me it's really difficult to decide between the commemorative jersey the Orioles presented Cal after he hit career HR 400 in 1999 or the umpires lineup cards from the first game of his consecutive game streak in 1982 (I consider myself real fortunate to own both):

Mine would be this Negro League style jersey and pants of Mike Cameron worn on July 5, 2008. Normally I don't go after things worn only once, but this was one of his better games with a HR and a sliding catch, plus it gives me something unique to represent his time in Milwaukee. Still to be seen if it will be one year or more than that...

Rob: Only reason I sold that jersey...ONLY REASON...was because of major purchases I made in 2008, or I would not have sold it. I bought it in 1994. Great piece, and surprisingly I had trouble selling it, most likely because of the steroid thing I guess...

I think it's gotta be my 06 Mike Mussina Uniform I picked up. Moose is my favorite player and to get this was amazing! Even more wonderful was the jersey had been photo matched to having be used on June 25th 06, the game where Moose got his 2500 K! It's become a family treasure (my Mom and I are huge Moose fans) and the jersey is currently being framed.

I've added quite a few pieces to my collection this year that I am quite fond of but my Prince Fielder Game Worn and Autographed Uniform worn at the Rickwood Classic is my favorite.

Fairfield Works - United States Steel jersey signed by Prince with MLB hologram

18102

Pants, belt and stirrups

All gift wrapped with a COA from Authenticgamers.com.

I've followed the movement of this uniform from owner to owner via various message boards but never thought I'd see it pop up again. Fortunately, it did and at a great price!

A very close second in 2008 is Ben Revere's game used fielding glove. Revere was the Twins top pick in 2007 and he hit .374 this last year for Beloit. The glove came with a COA stating that Revere had used it from the time he was in junior high until the end of last season!

A 1960's GU Yankees KM Pro (w/ '7' under the bill ???) This will be going to
Mears - supposedly from the 1968 Season (Mick's last year):

But Probably MY # 1 pick up in 2008 was Matt Holliday's ONLY GU 2007 World Series Hat and having it SIGNED and INSCRIBED by him Personally. While most Rockies players wore a different hat each of the 4 games, Matt told me personally that this was the ONLY hat he wore for ALL 4 games - also have Rockies LOA for Provenance:

Thanks for the info, but I can only find one post on hime about a glove.

And just so you know, I did not buy this hat under any auspices of it being a Mantle hat - only it being a Yankees Gamer from the period based on all info I have been able to find on auction sites and such referring to KM Pro and such.

I also don't have much tied up into it and I obtained the Angels hat for $25 after it had failed to sell on three other times he listed it.

As of Nov he was still using the name listed earlier here.

And his feedback was no worse than others I've seen on eBay... 98.5 or 99%

Please let me know what you and Yanks are referring to though...

I have to say, he did not list the hat as a Mantle - simply as a GU Yankees (which is does appear to be) that happens to have the 7 under the bill... also he said the source he got the item from believed it to be from the 1968 season. It came from the same place apparently as the Angels Cap.

Without question............my favorite item I was able to obtain during 2008.....(and maybe my entire adult collecting life....)

It was an item I thought I would never ever find, let alone be fortunate enough to win......

A single signed FULL FIRST NAME "Melvin Ott" baseball, hit by Mel for his 30th homer of 1929.

That's about as good as it gets for a guy who collects home run balls by the 500 home run club!

Yanks -

Thanks for the info.

Just so you know - I did do my research on Yankees Gamers and KM Pro hats from that era before buying.

Like I said earlier, I did not buy the hat on any preconceived notice that it is actually a GU Mantle (one could hope though!) but rather simply based on the info I could find that it is a GU Yankees hat from the late 60's to early 70's - no cracks in the bill but good 'sweat staining' around the band as is usual with wool caps.

Just for transparency sake, I only put around $200 into it and the Angels 'Halo' cap - and from what I could find from various auction sites prior sales (Hunt, Lelands, etc) that was way cheaper than what they have sold any GU Yankees caps or even 'Issued/non game used' caps from that era.

Again, I am very grateful to both you and NDevil for all of the info about Lin. As far as sending it to MEARS, I have already written Troy and Dave, and my only intention is to hopefully get it certified as a GU Yankees Cap from the day. I am hoping they will let me send some pics firts for a 'quick opinion' before going through the full blown process...

Chris,

Dude. Listen......

You're taking the old addage "Grasping at straws" to a whole new dimension.

We have all made mistakes, my friend. But c'mon. I'll be the bad guy here. The other members are loaded with class, and don't want to do anything other than state the obvious while letting you make up your own mind.

What you have is a fabricated piece of junk from a criminal who continues to put out items that, while under observation, may pass the basic "time frame" question, but fail miserably from that moment on.

Are you actually telling yourself that another player, who wore that cap as an active player, would NOT have placed a marking on it to identify the cap as his? And if NOT (which is silly to even consider), are you telling yourself that they would wear a cap that had Mantle's number on it??

And, if the number was "added" at a later date......how could the piece of junk REALLY be considered to be a game used item when there are no other identifiers on it PRIOR to the "7" being added?

Nothing personal, and I mean that........but this criminal lives off of people who don't know better. I KNOW you said you bought it with the understanding of what it is, but I think you let your guard down just a bit, because what it is is a fraudulent piece of garbage, IMO.

Just have solace in the fact you didn't pay a lot for it.

Steve hit it on the head.

This guy has had NUMEROUS things listed with this veil of "Well, I didn't say he actually used it in my description...."

His plan has been since the get go to "acquire" these pieces from sellers that apparently have no clue about the size of the memorabilia market all over the world. He 'stumbled' onto a 'vintage Pirates batting helmet' that looked to have CLEMENTE's number under the brim. CLEMENTE...not Dave Parker or Willie Stargell - Roberto Clemente. He put a few cards of Clemente up for comparison purposes, but never really said that the helmet was used by the man himself. His idea was to let the REAL collectors of the world determine its value. A little research would have shown a beginning collector that it was a fake - ut someone bought it anyway.:(

Onto the Mantle hat...

It was discussed in this forum while it was active on eBay. Nate has done a great job of calling these things to our attention. If there is a vendetta there, so be it. It is important for other members to bring up something as significant as a supposed Mantle hat.

Another thinly veiled listing. He put up a few Mantle cards and did everything but place in on the Mick's head in 1968. If it was in fact a legit item, something tells me that you would not need a MEARS opinion as they would probably own it themselves if they thought it was legit (just a hunch) - especially at that price. If not MEARS, than certainly another enterprising auctioneer or big time dealer.

I am all in favor of buyers knowing exactly what they are buying - that's awsome. If you wanted a late 60's Yanks hat - and that's what it is, I am very happy for you.

Steve and Dave -

Again, I very much appreciate your input. And as you stated above Dave -and as I told Yanks and NDevlin - I am under no perception that it is actually Mantle's hat... in fact I agree with you that all of the known Mantle's are probably in MEARS or another big collector's/auction house's hands.

I bought the item from the view point that regardless of what Lin said/didn't say, the hat is none the less a legimate Vintage KM Pro (unless someone thinks Lin stitched in the headband and tagging... ;) ) and from that point of view alone - and based on research of previous Auction House auctions of KM Pro Yankees hats of this era, $200 was a steal - especially since I was able to get him to toss in the Angels 'Halo' hat - just to have a Vintage piece in my collection.

I may not have made it clear in my previous wording, but my only real goal in having MEARS review it is to determine if they believe it is an actual GU hat (not necessarily Mantle's) from the era as that alone adds exponentially to the value versus simply being a Vintage KM Pro. (The cheapest Yankees Gamer I have found at auction from a non-star sold for nearly $3,000 last year)

Now, if anyone here has info showing that KM Pro made 'Stadium' or 'Fan' hats like New Era does today, I would be interested in reading those articles... however, everything I have been able to find about KM Pro points to them only making 'GAME' hats exclusively for the Yankees, Red Sox, etc as well as having been a 'Private Labeler' for Tim McAuliffe after New Era stopped their 'Private Label' operations for McAuliffe, Spalding and Wilson.

That said, it is possible - and probable that this cap is 'club house' issue that never saw game use but was given to an employee or friend of a player, etc. Even if that is the case, it still doesn't constitute the item being called a 'worthless piece of junk' because (again) it still comes form the lineage of being produced by the one time exclusive manufacturer of the Yankees hats and can be dated to within a 10 year (or so) time frame.

And as stated earlier, I don't have a lot invested in the piece - and as I'm sure some of you have done over the years, sometimes you have to take a risk (in my personal experience it levels out the rare lucky finds - and I have had a few over the years) and see what develops.

I'm still ahead of the game on three pieces that have fallen into my lap over the years (one is gone now due to my 1st wife and our divorce):

Kren's Special Frankie Frisch Game Bat (could not verify GU) - I bought this for $3 at a flea market and during the divorce one of the largest Vintage Memorabila guys in Denver checked it out and reviewed it and paid me close to $3k for it... (that's the one that's gone)

When my dad died a few years ago while in Tucson we went to the Flea Market - I picked up a 1925-27 Official AL Ball (some partial sigs on it - the varnish has flaked off and taken most of the sigs with it) for $2

Last year at the 'Super Duper' Garage Sale in Longmont,CO I picked a piece I have only seen drawings of (I'll post pics later) - an 1800's Spalding 'inside out' or 'seamless' baseball for $8

So, I'm pretty comfortable with a $200 investment ( two local Yankees collector's - who also know this probably isn't Mantle's hat) have aready made offers that would be profitable to me just to have a Vintage hat in their collections.

It's items like this that keep me engaged in the hobby as well - good discussions, and hopefully some good education and knowledge come from those discussions.

All the best -

Chris
