View Full Version : Pro Athletes From Your High School

Dewey2007

This was inspired by the school jersey thread. What athletes from the three major professional sports (MLB, NFL, NBA) went to your former/current high school. Below is a list of former Jets from my old high school (Encinal High School, Alameda, California).

Without knowing for sure I think Encinal might be the only high school (or one of a very few) to have 4 alumni with World Series rings.

Tommy Harper
Curt Motton
Jimmy Rollins
Willie Stargell
Dontrelle Willis
Melvin Carver
Ray Crouse
Junior Tautalatasi
Isaiah "J.R." Rider

Hi Dewey, that's a pretty impressive list. I went to a very small high school in rural Mississippi, Taylorsville High. The whole list is as follows:

Tim Moffett - WR Raiders
Jason Campbell - QB Redskins
Tim Duckworth - OT Saints

I attended Newtown HS in Elmhurst Queens. Luis Del Los Santos who played for the KC Royals during the late 80's went there too.

My brother-in-law grew up in Washington Heights and actually attended George Washington HS while Manny Ramirez was there too.

I graduated from Tecumseh High School in New Carlisle, Ohio:

Only pro I know of is Wayne Embry - Cincinnati Royals, Boston Celtics, and Milwaukee Bucks. He came to visit our school in 2005 with "The Big O" Oscar Robinson.

One more thing...I played against Justin Masterson in high school and I'm looking for one of his Red Sox jerseys. Let me know if you have one...murfsteve25@yahoo.com

Do I really need anymore?

On a related note, they used to have all MJs trophies and one of his jerseys in the display case in the lobby of the gym. It had a bolt type lock on it but the glass was so flexible you could bow it out and the lock would just fall to the base of the cabinet. We would carry around the trophies and wear the jersey and goof off before school started in the morning as it was the warmest place where you could just hang out in the winter. I graduated in 91 and there was never an incident, but I heard that years later the jersey was stolen.

I grew up in Middletown, NJ. There are two high schools, North and South. I went to North which never has produced a pro athlete, but South has 3 to their credit:

Jeff Kunkel, MLB, Texas and a couple of other teams.
Christian Peter, Nebraska National Champs, NFL, Giants and Bears
Jason Peter, Nebraska National Champs, NFL, first round pick (bust) of the Panthers. Injuries and drugs forced him into early retirement. I went to grade school and played soccer with Jason, we hung out a few times.

I don't think Middletown is proud of the Peter brothers though, Steroids, Rape, Drugs, ect.

I once got really drunk and tattooed in Willoughby. Many of my relatives are in the Cleveland area, and we got plastered at a micro-brewery one night. I got a giant cross tattoo on my right arm (thankfully it was a cross)...and spent the night at some dive off of the highway.

At lunch at Benigan's the next day and caught my plane at Hopkins on time. SO - I am familiar with your little town outside Cleveland Metro.

Yea, who's the President?

Also, as a football and baseball player in high school, I played against Daryl Strawberry who played at one of our rival high schools (Crenshaw), and Jay Shroeder who player at our number 1 rival, Palasades High School. He was a catcher like I was, but our baseball team beat up on his. We were good....real good. I caught a kid in high school who threw 95 MPH. However, their football team would rock us (along with everybody else in their way....)

Everybody knows where Strawberry ended up......Some of you may not remember Jay at first.....He was the quarterback for the Washington Redskins for many years, eventually playing also for the Raiders, Bengals, and Cardinals.

Forrest Whitaker, the actor...was his teammate. As center and defensive end for our football team, I got to block Forrest who was a nose/defensive tackle. He was tough, a good player.

My claim to fame in high school was throwing out Daryl Strawberry, who tried to steal on me. I had a gun...I threw him out by 10 feet...he didn't even slide, took it like a man, slowed up into the tag and jogged off the field. At his next at bat, he walked up to me and said "Hey bro....you got yourself an ARM!"

He then proceeded to hit a home run about 200 feet (I kid you NOT) over our short-porch right field fence when my pitcher missed his low and outside fastball over the plate......EVERYONE knew Straw was going to make it to the pros...he was scarey good.

The last time we were even close to a championship in NY football, Joe Namath was playing. I'm not saying we were uncompetitive but we wouldn't let girls join the team for fear of becoming bigger and more physical.

Marc Iavaroni was our sole pro athlete and he is most known for being yet another unknown coach for the Memphis Grizzlies.

When I become rich and famous then some other guy can post how inept our school was but at least the genius known as the GinGi graduated from there. :p

Joe Delamieulleure ex- Buffalo Bill, Cleveland Brown and Charlotte Rage, went to the Catholic high school, St. Clements in the same small town that I attended Center Line public high school.
Ran into Joe recently and glad to see him in great health and shape.
Always a class act and a true hall of famer.
