Hello,
This is the only game used football helmet I have in my collection. It's a game used Packers helmet from March 1968 (sticker inside helmet reads L3 68). The Packers emblem is a 2 piece sticker white on green. I was told it was used by Boyd Dowler it has his name in black marker inside helmet and Dowler autographed it on the outside. It show game use with many scuff and nicks on the outside. Hope you enjoy seeing this game used helmet. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
Thanks,:)

Whoa...we're putting Witten in Canton already??? I mean it is a neat helmet but maybe we should wait until he makes a big play in a playoff game (one they actually win) before we give him the jacket...
I was wondering how many would question my wording. I don't much like the Cowboys, but let's face it - he is a lock if he stays healthy. Playoffs don't really matter when it comes to the Hall of Fame. How many big plays did Charlie Sanders make in the playoffs? Here is a rundown on all of the HOF Tight Ends.

Dave Casper 9yr.....378rec.....5,216yds..... 52TD
Mike Ditka 12..... 427.....5,812.....43
John Mackey 10.....331.....5,236.....38
Ozzie Newsome 13.....662.....7,980.....47
Charlie Sanders 10.....336.....4,817.....31
Kellen Winslow 9.....541.....6,741.....45
Jackie Smith 16.....480.....7,918.....40

It should be noted that Smith caught a total of 20 passes combined in his last 4 years.

Witten has played 5 1/2 years. His stats look like this
5.5.....394.....4,532.....23

He has more receptions than Sanders, Mackey, and Casper, and will pass Ditka by the end of the year.

If he plays 10 years, and stays healthy, his statistics should be around the following:
10.....716.....8,240.....42

More receptions and yards than any of them that are currently in the Hall of Fame. That is just over a 10 year career. With Romo under center, he is likely to maintain those numbers if he stays healthy, vs having a relic for a current QB like Favre. Sorry Jet Lover, he is a lock, big plays in playoffs or not.

Give him the jacket...

shoremen44
10-28-2008, 03:35 PM
The game is different than when most of those tight ends played... o be a hall of famer to me you have to be dominant and at least at times the best and/or the most feared player on the field...

Witten is a good and maybe great tight end, but he is not head and shoulders above the rest...

I dont think he is going to catch Gonzalez... 12 ys... 853 rec... 10251yds... 73 TD

and isnt putting up the numbers of Gates... 6 yrs... 370 rec... 4765... 48 TD

He has had a great run so far and if he stays healthy and on a good passing team he has a chance, but to give out the jacket after 5 years is linsane... Football is simply too tough a game

orioles03
10-28-2008, 03:41 PM
i would say say looking at todd heaps numbers if he would have been healthy and had a qb he would be hof worthy.you also have to remember he played with shannon sharpe his rookie year so he learned from the best sorry to go off topic just my 2 cents

...vs having a relic for a current QB like Favre. Sorry Jet Lover, he is a lock, big plays in playoffs or not.

LOL, way to make it personal hater :D . How did this become about Favre or the Jets? Sure, Witten projected out will have some nice numbers and a shot at the Hall as MANY players in the league would. But 5 years a HOF career does not make (a lot of things can happen on the back end of a career - just ask Terrell Davis) and you wrote he IS a HOFer. I simply said there is much work to be done for him and big games in which he needs to put his signature on, ala Kellen Winslow. I know how it is when you have a collection piece and want it to be a grand a possible.

Anyhow, you want a true Jets lover? How about some props for Mickey Shuler who amassed over 5,000 career receiving yards, 460+ receptions, and 37 TD's in his 14 year career. A two time Pro Bowler and was the best pass catching tight end in the league during the prime of his career. I'd put him in but I admit I am extremely biased. I would put in the entire 1968 Championship team, Joe Klecko, Mark Gastineau, Curtis Martin (who should be a lock) so on and so on. Good think I don't work for the HOF cuz that place would be draped in green and white. But I have my own Jets HOF, just no induction ceremonies ;)

Fair enough.

Just ripping on your username a bit. As for Favre, I din't mean any disrespect, I simply was pointing out that with Romo, there is more stability down the road than with an older QB. Gonzalez was brought up, but look at who has been throwing to him the last few years. With a decent QB his numbers would be better. I was going to use Warner in my example, but they have Leinart, and Favre fit better with you being a Jets fan - or lover.

Didn't mean to get this thread off track.

Thanks Roger,

Just so you know, not all of the helmets at my website(www.greenglare.com) are in my collection. Only, the ones with the similar backdrop; i.e. Jim Zorn, Tatupu, etc. are in my collection. My site's intention is for reference, ID, and nostalgia.

At the moment, I am looking for vintage Seahawks helmets only, 1976-79. If anyone has any for sale, or, trade I am interested. Pictures also, that I could put up on my website would be nice.

Thanks robert. The first one shown is suspect since the decal is very much wrong.

Do you have any more pictures/information for the one that was sold for $1,700? It looks to be the real deal, since the decal was positioned that way in 1976 for a lot of the helmets. However, must be from a lesser known player, probably defensive back, since the facemask preferred that year was the Dungard 210, or, BD-9.

That last one, I believe belonged to Brian Peets, yet, was used in a museum setup to commemorate the expansion teams of '76. Thus there are some weird holes drilled into it for display purposes.

I don't doubt it's a Largent, well maybe I do, until further proof. Only because, if this were the mask that he wore, at the time acquired, it was from the 1981-82 season. Thus, The decal placement is suspect, since, I've only seen them placed that low the first year, '76? Could be a different mask was put on, etc. etc. Nice, none the less. Thanks for posting these Robert. Might put this one up on my site as a 1976 helmet, w/Clip On 1 OPO Mask, and player unknown.

you are spot on about the low positioning of the side decals - something the seahawks abandoned pretty quickly. speaking of largent - he must hold the nfl all-time record for most facemask styles used in a career! honestly, what was up with that? is there even a close second?

I bought it after he got in trouble but before his trial. This helmet was requested during the season by the HOF as he set a couple of quarterback records that season. He rushed for 1039 yards with 8.45 yards per carry. I have a letter from Vick about the helmet. Every piece on it is original, including the chin strap.

I was never a fan of his, and am not now. I do think the helmet is a unique piece in my collection, regardless of the value to others now.

Attached are pictures of a bar code label that is in the dome of a LA Ram helmet that I have. I don't think these have ever been discussed. Also is the date stamp and a outside view. Does the numbers on the bar code label reveal anything as far as date of manufacture?

wow, manufactured on my birthday, 02/08. given that it was molded in 1988, it would have certainly been available for the 1990 super bowl. but given that smith's first year in the league was 1985, this would mean that he moved to a new helmet relatively quickly, after only 3 years (i.e., he couldn't have worn this helmet before the 1988 season). or it could be that the helmet sat around for a year or two and he wasn't issued it until the 1990 season (even though it was manufactured in 1988). when i get a chance i'll see if i can dig up any quality photos of smith during those years...

in 1987 schutt introduced the serial number decal you've pictured - at this time they also started to include the date the helmet was assembled (drilled for holes, etc.), i.e. helmets now included two pieces of date info: the date it was manufactured (molded) and the date it was prepared to leave the factory (assembled). the assembly date could be up to 6 months later than the manufacturing (molding) date.

when the serial number decals were first introduced, the assembly date was heat stamped on the exterior back of the helmet, usually below the logo. later on the assembly date was moved from the back on the lid to the serial number decal where it was ink-stamped using a letter date code (as used with schutt facemasks) or a numerical date code.

the long number following the "sn" does have significance but it does not pertain to a date - it represents the helmet's assembly turn. for example, sn4189626 means that the helmet was the 4,189,626th helmet to have been assembled as of the date schutt took ownership. the above sn was taken from a 1999 schutt helmet i own - your 1988 helmet was the 328,848th helmet assembled. that means that 3,860,778 helmets were assembled in the 11 years that separate our two helmets for an average of about 351,000 helmets per year.

fwiw, within the last couple of years the sn number has changed to reflect the production lot as opposed to the assembly turn. the production lot number is a code for such things as model number, color, size, date info, etc.

Looking forward to seeing them. The shot that I posted from Getty - from the SB showing the inside of the helmet matches very nicely for the interior. I contacted Getty, and they want $150 for the photo - not sure I am ready to pull the trigger on that one. The paint loss on the rear sizer teeth matches the photo as do the worn jawpads and chinstrap. There is even a stain (spot) on the right side of the front sizer in the photo that is also on the helmet.

Thanks for the effort.

Hello all! Could someone educate me how to read the date code as indicated above as "02/08" as deciphered by aeneas01?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I concentrate on ACC game worn helmets primarily.

Many thanks,Tom

nice lid "helmets" - if i remember correctly, i think the date code on that helmet is '97 which would mean it might be the first helmet plummer was issued (i.e. his rookie helmet). i think the item description mentioned other info on the inside of the helmet as well (h.c. (hard cup), opo, vsr4l (large) and b.u. although i'm not sure they got the b.u. right, did they?).

tom 1315 - the date code is not a straight forward deal. for example the last number signifies the year the helmet was manufactured but other factors need to be considered as well such as the date code location on the helmet, whether or not letters follow the numbers, what the first number of the series is, etc... if you have some dates your curious about shoot me an email and i will get back to you....

Yes, that information is in the helmet. It does have some reconditioning tags as well. The "OPO" is followed by "H.G." - which I am not sure what it means. Normally they have something on the label about the chinstrap as well, but I do not see that. The "BU" I assume means Back Up, but with the wear that is present, the reconditioning stickers, and the photos that I see, it looks to be more than a back up helmet - unless BU means something different.

Good to hear from you again. Its been a while. I thought maybe you packed up a suitcase with some of your database and went out on the road with Lou...

are you sure the "hg" isn't an "hc" which would stand for "hard cup" chinstrap? as far as the "bu" is concerned, i agree with you - can't imagine it would stand for "back up" albeit that does seem to be the most obvious conclusion. imo it would be very odd to label a helmet as a backup in that manner, to abbreviate it with "bu" and include it along with the other info in that area - it would imply that the helmet was a backup from the get-go as opposed to a worn helmet regulated to backup service... doesn't make very much sense to me.

i believe that is the same lid that sold on ebay a couple of weeks ago - for a very reasonable price i might add (imo). but the ebay lid was fitted with a 70s nop, not an xl jop. when i first started collecting helmets i acquired quite a few tak29's given they were always among my very favorite riddell models - gotta love the transition era they represent. a couple of years ago i picked up an impregnated maroon tak29 that was fitted with a yellow bd9 facemask that was in great game-used condition, a perfect theisman project lid. anyway, tak29's are great helmets....

a couple of things about the your helmet - a) given that it's dated 1976, you obviously have a vintage lid from an nfl franchise's inaugural season on your hands - that's pretty special b) the side decals on your helmet were also applied before the suspension unit was installed, another rare and special aspect of your helmet c) your helmet shows the classic signs of vintage side decal "shrinkage" that has left a perimeter of decal adhesive along the vinyl edges. just a great looking lid albeit it appears to have very lightly usage...

here are some photos of some seahawks sporting tak29 lids - herrera 1978 (top left), mccullum 1976 (top right), evans 1977 (bottom left), bebout 1979 (bottom right). frankly i think you should throw a dungard 140 on it to give it the evans look - but the kenny easley look isn't too bad either!

Thanks Robert. The 3 JOP XL's a mask that I always wanted to see on a true Seahawks suspension helmet, let alone a TAK 29. Visually, it's one of the most appealing to me, so, to have this mask on this helmet is a dream come true. Plus, I already have the DG 140 mask on my Coffield/Lynch helmet. Not sure, this is what Jim's description was of the helmet.

Player unknown, Riddell Pack 44 size 7, shell-dated 1981. The original facemask is missing and was replaced with a back/receiver mask dating to 1995. Good game-use is exhibited through numerous scuffs and paint marks on the shell, a purple paint mark which may indicate the helmet was actually used in 1982 when the team played Minnesota, in addition to plenty of dirt and sweat staining inside. The jaw pads are intact but the fasteners are in disrepair. An inexpensive item for the budget-minded Dolphins collector.

jason - i hate to rain on your parade but that's not an authentic game used dolphins helmet and it's priced accordingly at $125. if you're looking for a nice display item that captures the feeling of a game used dolphins helmet, i think the helmet you're looking at will do the trick just fine at a pretty decent price. but if you're looking for something that saw the inside of the the dolphins locker room and was used by on a dolphins player on sundays, then you will need to continue your search - and, most likely, you will also need to be prepared to drop more than $125.

the helmet you are looking at is a riddell pac44 helmet which was a riddell's youth model at the time - it was not manufactured or sold for competitive adult play (high school, college, pro, etc.) but, rather, for grades 9th and below. there is just no way around this - and there isn't any plausible reason why an nfl team (let alone a high school or college team) would have purchased these helmets nor is there any plausible reason why riddell would have sold these helmets to adult teams.

unlike the adult models which were made of a more expensive and more impact resistant polycarbonate plastic (kra-lite), the pac44 helmets were made of a less expensive and less impact resistant abs plastic. needless to say riddell and/or any adult program would have been in a rather tough spot had it been discovered in a product liability suit that an adult player was injured due to wearing a pac44, a youth helmet.

i suspect the helmet you are looking at is nothing more than one of the many riddell reproduction display helmets in circulation that were available at retail outlets many years ago - riddell used several different models for these helmets including pro (adult) models, pac44's and even foam-lined shells. the pac44s, like the pro models, were typically fitted with usfl style facemasks while the foam-lined shells were typically fitted with kra-lite facemasks.

the first wave of retail/display pac44 helmets were actually fitted with riveted jaw pad snaps but these snaps were eventually replaced with "pegged" jaw pads that snapped into vacant shell holes - no doubt a cost cutting move. the yackel helmet is fitted with the "pegged" jaw pads and that's what he's referring to when he states "...the fateners are in disrepair" - most likely some of the pegs have broken off from the jaw pads. interestingly i have come across a couple of "kra-lite" pac44 helmets in the past at auction - that is to say kra-lite shells fitted with pac44 padding. but i would guess that this was due to folks putting pac44 padding into an empty an kra-lite shell they came across or riddell liquidating their old kra-lite shell inventory by fitting them with pac44 padding and selling them as display helmets.

anyway take a look at these photos:

a) the top three photos show a retail philadelphia eagles pac44 display helmet that was sold to the public many years ago - more than a few of these type of helmets have magically turned into "authentic gamers" as the years have gone by - go figure.

b) the two photos at the bottom left show a dolphins "shell" reproduction display helmet and the yackel helmet. notice that the "shell" helmet does not have any attachment method for the jaw pads (circled in red) - no snap rivets or peg holes, nothing. and notice the peg holes in the same area of the yackel helmet (again circled in red). now compare this to the game photo on the right which clearly shows a helmet fitted with riveted jaw pad snaps (circled in red), which is typical. if you search getty images you will be able to find a ton of circa 80s closeup nfl and college game photos of players wearing their football helmets - try to find just one shot of a player wearing a helmet similar to the yackel helmet, with jaw pad peg holes. you won't be able to because the players are wearing adult helmets, not youth helmets. btw i'm not saying that yackel is trying to pull anything here - i understand that he's a great guy and a very honest dealer. but he wouldn't be the first honest dealer to think he was selling an authentic gamer that was actually a youth helmet turned into a retail display helmet...

Jim knows the value of an early Dolphins authentic helmet, and it certainly is not $125. Lack of identifiers or numbers on the rear, the changed mask, the pegged jawpads, etc. I know Jim's reputation, but I find it hard to believe, given how long he has done this, given how many helmets he has seen and sold over the years, given the prices that he charges for helmets, and finally given the price that he was asking for this one, that he did not know what he had and what he was describing. His business is selling game used jerseys and helmets, and you can not convince me that he didn't have a clue on this one.

i was trying to be diplomatic by giving yackel the benefit of the doubt because i know he has treated collectors fairly in the past. but of course your are 100% correct - jim has been around football helmets long enough to know the difference between a pro model and a youth model. the same goes for aj sports collectibles, another reputable dealer, that was pushing pac44 lids as game used pro models on ebay last month.

speaking of yackel, the $4,000 marinio "gamer" he has listed at his sight has some big problems as well - definitely bunk imo...

Hi Aeneas01, thank you very much for sharing the additional photo of Jack Del Rio wearing the helmet I own. You are indeed correct: The helmet is in fact from the 1993 season (not 1994). For some reason 1994 stuck in my head since, as you correctly point out, the photo I have was from the January 9, 1994 Vikings v. Giants playoff game.... I have seen other photos of Del Rio from that same January 9, 1994 Vikings v. Giants game, and it appears that during the early part of the game, the red mark was not on the left horn of Del Rio's helmet (see attached photo from that same game--no red mark on the left horn), but clearly later on in that same game (when it was darker and the sun went down--see photo in my previous post) there is a red mark on the left horn--so I suspect that the red mark across the left horn occurred during that very Vikings v. Giants playoff game (probably from helmet to helmet contact with the red stripe of a Giants helmet). I found that photo matching photo on Getty Images about a year ago, before I ever learned about GUU and the value and verification enhancing importance of photo matches. When I came upon the photo revealing the red mark across the horn, I was thrilled, and I quickly paid Getty a $200+ license fee to get the opportunity to make myself a copy of that photo for my own personal use to confirm the photo match with my Del Rio helmet. This Del Rio helmet is about as good as it gets as far as modern-era game used helmets go. First, Del Rio is a pretty well-known player. And he wore leather jaw pads, which are rare for modern day players to wear. The photos I have posted don't even begin to show the significant and impressive game wear and battle scars on this helmet. And, the helmet is also autographed by Del Rio on the other side (see attached photo of the right side of the helmet). It is for sure one of the crown jewels and a top favorite of all the game used Vikings helmets in my collection.

Just picked up a nice Rams 1970's suspension helmet. Made by Wilson, the helmet is all-original less replaced facemask clips. I know Robert's favorite team is the Rams and I'll hold my breath until Robert gives it his thumbs up.

Have to say, this thread is looking pretty good.

if you've already paid for this helmet i hope the people you purchased it from will give you a full and immediate refund, including s&h - if you haven't already paid for it keep your money. this helmet doesn't come close to being an authentic a.j. hawk game used helmet - in fact imo it's not even an authentic packers gamer. looks like a typical retail helmet signed by hawk to which someone added the game used notations...

for the heck of it, here's a shot of a.j. during that 01/03/10 game - pretty obvious that it's not the same helmet, not even close...

When I first saw this post last night, the thing that struck me was the handwriting from the signature and the 'game used inscription' were so different (other than cursive vs printing).

Perlman had sent me photos of this helmet. When I stated that it was not a Hawk helmet, and not a Packers GU helmet - due to several problems, a miracle took place.

One of the five or six problems that I described to him, was the lack of the upper chinstrap holes - that Hawk has worn every year while with the Packers. To days later...I received a photo. The helmet now has the upper chinstrap holes, complete with snaps, even though Hawk and the majority of Packers have their chinstraps secured in the upper position with screws.

As the Packers are the good Lord's favorite team, miracles do happen...

Now if the Riddell Z2B was removed and a T-ROPO-DW replaced along with a gel Adams Pro 100D, a triple stripe, removal of the factory Riddell proline warning label, the proper decals applied, and the silly #50 identifier on the interior of the helmet removed, he may have something. I just wish the person that wrote the inscription on the rear wasn't so nervous and shook so badly...

so, in a nutshell:

1. favrenvikes09 shows the forum a photo of an "aj hawk game used helmet" he recently purchased from perlman9 - a helmet favrenvikes09 is very much looking forward to receiving.

2. "helmets" sees the photo, catches the many problems with the helmet (including the lack of a highpoint chinstrap fastener) and emails perlman9 about these issues.

3. perlman9 then sends "helmets" a photo of the same helmet, but this time around the helmet is fitted with highpoint chinstrap fasteners (albeit the wrong type). in other words perlman9 (or someone he is in contact with), in response to "helmets" email, drilled holes into the helmet and added snaps in an attempt to better match what hawk actually wore.

4. and throughout this process perlman9 has maintained the helmet is aj hawk's gamer from the packers' 01/03/10 playoff game against the cardinals.

perlman9, do you want to chime in?

left photo: originally posted by favrenvikes09, no highpoint chinstrap fastener.
center photo: hawk's gamer showing the highpoint fastener.
right photo: same helmet favrenvilkes09 posted but with highpoint fasteners perlman9 added after the fact...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y238/aeneas1/ajh.jpg

anyway, as mentioned before, this helmet is nothing more than a retail lid autographed by hawk that someone then added a game used inscription to...

Hey just to let everyone know Jason has been very helpful to me and helping me determine it wasn't game used. He was essentially the middle man in the process and its not his helmet, he was trying to get the helmet from AJ charity through a source for me and all these photos arent his. They are photos sent to him by that Justin guy I breifly referenced. I basically made the mistake of rushing to post its a legitmate helmet and making Jason look like a knucklehead when I should have done some additional homework regarding the decals, chinstrap, etc. Jason and I have worked out a refund or possible alternate type of deal. He wasnt trying to sell me anything bogus or fake and wanted to make sure he had a legitimate item before anything was finalized and shipped.

Sure.. I was trying to be helpful getting a helmet for someone. I received the money to get the helmet and posted photos. when questions were raised, I kept asking more questions of the person responsible for getting the helmet (i didn't actually see the helmet until this morning). I took all concerns about the helmet seriously and when I found out the issues offered a full refund (which would leave ME out them money but know its the right thing to do). I trusted someone to get an item they said they could and unfortunately put my trust in someone I thought I could and it bit me in the ass. At no point did I try to get the buyer to keep the helmet nor am I. I am personally going to be taking a big loss which is why I will only stick to collecting for myself rather then help others get something as it just doesn't seem to be worth it, unfortunately. A bad lesson to learn but one that shows no matter who says something is legit you just can't seem to trust anyone. But again, I never saw the helmet personally until today and am trying to get a refund from the charity but will probably end up with a big loss and unfortunately have become more jaded that I really ever wanted to be

help me out - favrenvikes09 posted a photo of the helmet without highpoint chinstrap snaps two days ago. you emailed the same photo to "helmets" two days ago as well. the very next day, yesterday, you emailed "helmets" another photo of the same helmet but this time it was fitted with the highpoint chinstrap snaps - one day after "helmets" had pointed out that your aj helmet was missing these key features.

but you said you didn't have the helmet in your possession, that you didn't actually see it until today, that you were getting it from someone else that you trusted. so how did the snaps change? are you saying that the guy you trusted emailed you updated photos of the helmet yesterday with snaps now attached? one day after you discovered (were told) aj hawk's helmet should have these snaps? just trying to understand.

also, you mentioned this helmet came directly from aj hawk, that he personally signed it as game used, and that it was a helmet he wanted to donate to an auction he's involved with. yet you were able to get a hold of it before it had a chance to get to auction? is that right?

just trying to understand.

02-19-2010, 06:53 PM
While I appreciate your concerns, Rob, I am not sure why I would give out someone's information to you since you are not the buyer? I explained what happened. A friend who has helped me get pieces in the past said a friend and former OSU teammate of AJs could get this helmet. I tried to help someone get the piece. I asked for photos. the first photo sent was what I got. When questions came up, I asked for more, the other photos were sent back to me. I have no idea what someone did or didn't do to the helmet. If i was trying to rip someone off, I would have sent the helmet and been done with it. I don't have the helmet, never did and never will. Again I am the one who lost out because I paid for the helmet or an alternative piece out of my on pocket because I trusted someone who said they could get something could. My fault for trusting a source I didn't know. As I said, I got bit by this since a full refund has been on the table since day one of the questions. Now, do I believe the person who has the helmet altered it after I posed questions, probably. Was it me? No. I can see where it looks that way and again, I have to deal with the consequences of trying to help someone get and item and that item wasn't real. But if I was really trying to rip someone off, I would have just sent the helmet, not try to get questions answered. But I know people on here like a good conspiracy, so I unfortunately cannot stop that from happening. I can only try to make the person who actually wanted the helmet happy with the transactions, and I am doing everything I can to make that happen. But never would I give out information about someone to a person who has nothing to do with the transaction. Now, if I saw where someone was trying to get an item from that person, I would contact them privately with my experience. But I also feel sometimes honest mistakes can happen and unfortunately a public "outing" can damage a reputation that didn't necessarily deserve it.

So, I am happy to answer questions about the transaction or to help people from getting bit like this in the future as I feel a little wiser albeit poorer. But the source, a former OSU player and OSU teammate of AJ, said the helmet was game worn and for charity and I accepted his word. Obviously, and even more so when I saw the actual helmet, I shouldn't have. My fault and I am taking the blame for trusting a source without seeing the item. But I never tried to sell the item once I got the photos.

perlman9
02-19-2010, 07:08 PM
To answer your questions directly, Rob. Yes, I was told AJ was to auction off a game worn helmet for charity, but for a set price, would sell the helmet with the proceeds going to that charity. I do not know which charity as it was a former buckeye and I really didn't think the need to ask. Looking back, a mistake, but again, I just trusted this person for who he was. It was said early on that the helmet wouldn't be available for pick up until the week after the auction, which was supposed to be on a Saturday. I asked for photos as obviously the buyer was excited to see it. I sent the first photo (without the chin guard) to the buyer and the expert. I got a quick reply from the expert with concerns. At first, I responded with "Why would AJ lie about the helmet?" But the concerns were legit. I sent another request for photos asking to see particular items (back where number should be, inside, and did say it should have the high chin straps that didn't seem to appear in the photo). The next set of photos were sent about a day later and then did appear with the chin strap marks. I then sent those on for analysis, which I even replied with I cannot believe someone would do this involved with the charity. All the while, I was keeping the buyer in the loop with offers of a refund, which again, I will have to pay. I then , for the first time, saw the actual helmet "in person" and knew right away it was wrong and told the buyer that again today. Now, I am trying to get my money back from the charity with the claim the charity misrepresented the item or I just got a bad helmet, and it has gone nowhere.

I do not know what charity or anything about it except I believed a friend and former OSU teammate of AJ would only off a real item. that obviously didn't happen and do not know personally if the teammate or someone from said charity was taking the photos. Obviously the contact claims ignorance and again, because he could be caught in the middle as well, don't want to give bad info out about him. What I think happened may not be what actually happened and since I have sold quality items in the past am obviously hurt by this but have been as open and honest with the buyer throughout the entire process and continue to be. But again, I also know it can look as I am the person trying to sell a bad item, just as easily as the contact or the supposed charity, so I can only give what happened from my perspective and hope to get my money back as well.

While I appreciate your concerns, Rob, I am not sure why I would give out someone's information to you since you are not the buyer?

true, i'm not the buyer - but i'm a concerned collector that's always interested in finding out where forged helmets originate, for myself and for other helmet collectors.

in an email to "helmets" you told him this helmet came "...directly from AJ, signed by him game used". but favrenvikes09 mentions there was a middleman involved, justin. now you mention that on top of a middleman a former osu teammate of aj's was involved in this helmet as well. plus a layer of charity workers. so i'm not sure how this helmet came "directly from aj" - or how you could have represented it to "helmets" as coming "directly from aj".

whatever the case, in the end the collector (favrenvikes09) didn't get stuck with a counterfeit/forged helmet and that's what's important. but what also remains is the fact that someone you've been in contact with deliberately tried to rip off a collector - twice. once by forging "game used" on a retail helmet and then again by adding pieces to the helmet in an effort to make the helmet look like what aj wore.

so in the spirit of protecting collectors from those that would take advantage of them, from those that would blatantly try to sell counterfeit pieces as authentic, i would like the contact info of the person you got this helmet from. or, even better, contact info regarding the charity as well. if you don't have the charity info, please let me know who told you this helmet was for a charity event, perhaps they might have the information.

I think it is safe to say that everyone here on this forum has been "bitten in the ass" at one time or another. It is the reason the forum exists. People who really care about the hobby come here in an effort to educate and hopefully prevent the situations like this one with this helmet. Usually,it is a lesson only learned with hard earned cash.
Now, I also love this forum for its "watchdog" mentality that always has an eye open for shady actions and attacks them when they surface. IMO the Hawk helmet story is becoming a tangled web. Guys, I do sympathize with your situation, as I too have been bitten very hard in the past with this same type of scenario.
With that said, use the power of this forum and its members to find where this helmet originated. To use generics when telling the story about its origin doesn't help. People should be held accountable when stuff like this happens wheather they ment it or not. Most times the names of the "innocent" are protected. In this case the names of the "guilty" are being kept secret. All the people in this chain of events, need this helmet brought to their attention so that the innocent can be educated and hopefully prevent this from happening in the future. We are here to help.

Do they want a fee? NO but they do ask for openness and honesty when they are asked for their help and a thumbs up from the above mentioned guys are worth a thousand times more than some LOA from some company and/or individual who feels that they are self-proclaimed "experts" in the field and they charge hundreds of dollars for a worthless piece of paper.

I guess I am not still totally clear where the helmet "originated" as I was told originally it was through AJ and this charity and then through the former Buckeye and teammate. Once I have a better understanding I am happy to share, but even though I have strong ideas I really have no true knowledge as one is blaming the other and I still don't have all the information I need to get my money back. I am not trying to withhold information and want to share but at the same time I don't want to keep posting speculations that may change to even make the story more of a tangled mess. I hope that makes sense and is understandable, and neither the charity (which I am still not exactly sure who it is) nor the former player and teammate has so far taken responsibility. Once things start to clear, I will be happy to post what happened, but it is a pretty fluid thing right now and again, don't want to keep the web tangling if I can wait to find out more info to actually help untangle. All I can say for those out there that no source , no matter how airtight it may seem, should be trusted without seeing the product first. Lessons unfortunately others have learned and I just did, but hopefully this will help others from thinking because of a person's stature (or I hate to think a non-profit) that they are above doing something like this.

Happens to the best of 'em. Just a little while ago AMI had a supposed Steve Largent gamer up for auction, and even listed the two possible games it was worn in. Add to that, it had a COA from the equipment manager. Ok, I don't have the time to tell you all the details, yet, I'm quite positive that helmet was never worn in those games, or, in any game on top of Largent's head. In the end, someone ended up shellin' out $2400, or so, for it. I wouldn't have given more than $300 since some of the components looked legit, just not as a whole.

I suspect this equipment manager found a few extra components and put this Largent helmet together.

Hi Marcus,

Judging from some of the photos you've posted already, the Seahawks and Raiders helmets look like they may be real game used helmets. It's hard to tell unless there are photos to study. But from my experience, there are some things to look for to determine if a helmet is game used. It is always helpful to check the inside of the helmet and look for player ID numbers or dymo tape with player names and numbers. Some of the 80s era helmets have distinct date codes on the inside upper part of the helmet, usually a round imprint that has a month and year date code. And sometimes the inside has reconditioning stickers and warning stickers that show the date. Also, look for game wear on the outside of the helmets. If there are gashes and evidence of helmet-to-helmet contact on the outside (particularly the forehead area), this suggests game wear/use. Also check the Getty Images website and look for photos of NFL teams, and this can help you get a sense of what the players have worn each season, and you can compare that way too.

I know quite a bit about Vikings helmets (that's why I am Vikingshelmetguty!), and I think I could help you to figure out the Vikings helmet. I would need to see a photo of the helmet to figure out if it is the real deal or not... Let me know if you want my e-mail, or you can post a photo here on GUU.

hello NFL helmet collectors
i need some tips about the helmets

i did got three used helmets from a guy who used to work for LA RAIDERS

seahawks easley used helmet but dont know what year its from

Raiders throwback 1994 game ready helmet with marker on back 4 K

jets 1990 game used mcmillan helmet

the question i am asking you about three or four helmets i am not sure of buying ...

chargers 1988 blue rawlings helmet with "box like blue facemasks" this facemask only used few years in late 80s, my opinion they are ugly looking facemasks in football history....haha
chargers helmet doesnt have white numbers on the back of the helmet ...

vikings purple helmet with purple facemasks the same facemask as chargers but in QB style

buffalo bills helmet from 90s and the seller claims its bruce smith helmet and i didnt believe him because he said the 1994 raiders helmet was marcus allens but he played for the KC chiefs in 1994 :)

the bills helmet have AIR on the front of the helmet, i know players who worn air helmets doesnt have AIR on it ?? true ??? bills helmet doesnt have white numbers on the back of the helmet but it has NFL sticker on the back.

how can i find what year it is from etc and find proof that it is game used ??
pls help me
lmk
thanks
marcus

Is that mcmillan helmet for sale? I have a rookie era game used jersey that would go great with it. Also I know him and his father who played for the cards back in the 60's thru 70's. Please lmk as that would be cool if we could work a deal for it.

I could not resist digging into my savings to get another game used 2009 Vikings helmet from JO Sports. Here are some photos of my new Drew Radovich Minnesota Vikings helmet that I just purchased from JO Sports. It is the first Riddell Revolution helmet in my collection. This helmet surprised me by how big and heavy it is. It is a very substantial and impressive helmet. I am thrilled to own it! I must compliment JO Sports. My purchase from JO Sports was fast, easy and pleasant. They shipped the helmet immediately. And the helmet comes with a nice packet of materials and certificates of authenticity. JO Sports was professional and first-class in every way.

Just acquired this game worn 2008 - 2009 Ryan Longwell helmet from JO Sports. Reconditioning sticker inside with 2-2009 date. Although photos of Longwell shows that he wore a Schutt (not Riddell) helmet during the 2009 season, so I think this one was his 2008 season helmet which I am guessing was reconditioned after the 2008 season and worn further by Longwell during early training sessions in 2009.

2010 Chris Canty pre-season or training camp helmet. Shows light use. I know Canty used a stainless mask all through his career until he recently switched to a DNA helmet. This one is a carbon steel mask so I am guessing it is from training camp.

This is my 1996 Dana Stubblefield game worn helmet. This helmet was worn the entire season and also in the NFC Divisional Playoffs on January 4, 1997 against the Green Bay Packers in the "Mud Bowl". The helmet still has mud on it from the game especially on the visor. It was easily photo matched on Getty in multiple pictures.

I also have his pants and jersey from the 1997 season and the jersey is signed and inscribed "NFC Def. Player of the year". Will post pics on another thread later.

It is so rare to see the real deal from the 90s and that helmet is just a beauty! I am sure Robert would like to comment on a REAL helmet for once. It is refreshing to see an authentic helmet rather than the constant flow of fakes and other junk passed off as gamers.

Here is another - just for you Blitzmaster...

Worn for multiple seasons, last year 1992, last game worn - ProBowl, signed by all four Saints ProBowl linebackers.

In addition, here is a story behind the helmet. Basically when he was inducted into the HOF, they did not have his helmet for the display. Little did people know that it was not his helmet. A modern day VSR4 with a new custom Schutt mask - brand new clips, new Oakley style Xcel shield, etc...

Thanks Paul.

A 1968 Lions Riddell Kra-Lite Husky. When I got it, it did NOT have a facemask on it so I attached a Riddell 2-bar for display purposes. Not many of these babies out there.

Just a heads up for anyone interested. I was contacted by the Seahawks Pro Shop today, and they have some nice game worn players helmets available (albeit out of my comfort zone in price).

They have a Marshawn Lynch for $2k, a Mike Williams for $1200 and a T-Jack for $1k.

Hopefully someone on here will get these and enjoy them.

THE SIDELINES : U.S.Flag to Grace NFL Helmets

December 20, 1990 (http://articles.latimes.com/1990/dec/20)|From Times Wire Services
NEW YORK — NFL players will wear American flag decals on their helmets, starting in this weekend's games.
"This presentation of the American flag is a very appropriate method for the NFL clubs and players to affirm their support for the men and women of our armed forces on duty in Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf," Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said today.

I admit at first I forgot as well, then remembered the first Bush's Iraq war. They only did the flag for a brief period that season, perhaps only from mid December until the Super Bowl. Here are the best shots I could find of them during a game in 1990.

Thus, an identical non game used version of the Steve Myer helmet. Pretty cool to see the two next to each other.

Here's a 1965 Eagles helmet worn by Norm Snead during the 1965 season and for the Pro Bowl in January, 1966. A totally original helmet, less damaged and/or removed NFL shields. When held from the bottom, I can clearly see the Kelly green paint under the gold paint. It's amazing that it survived the shredder.

Just picked up this Eagles "gamer". The shell is from 1964 and it is double-stamped on the back which leads me to believe it was used, sent back to Riddell and then returned to the Eagles.

It is my first "Husky" and the helmet is a beast.

Hope you are well. Maybe all us Hawaii collectors can get together soon to check out some of our new additions.

Stay in touch.

I have been working on my NFL helmets and obtained a 2003 season Lamar Gordon RB St Louis Rams gamer. Has a WeTrak card and a Tri-Star Productions certification that is showing as a Lamar Gordon game worn. 2003 was Gordon's 2nd season in the NFL and he played in 10 games with 4 starts. His statistics were 298 yards rushing and 8 receptions. He played his college ball at North Dakota State. Helmet has nice wear marks on the shell and the Rams' horns, good wear on the facemask. Has the typical dymo tape "34 Gordon" near a cheek pad and a 2003 recertification decal. Schutt navy facemask dated "HJB" for August 2002 attached with 01 top clips and doubles on the side. Shows nice wear, inside and out. Enjoy!

Cohibasmoker,
The Eagles 1964 'husky' looks great, keep posting the oldies but goodies.
Husky helmets are some of the rarest (and heaviest) around but the painted Eagle wings make it even more special, very nice.

Just snagged a 1967 Falcons "gamer". It was worn by Randy Johnson who was the 1st ever QB for the Falcons. It was located in a thrift store over 40 years ago. Note the gold center-ridge stripe and red dyno tape on the back. A very rare 2nd year style of helmet

Just picked up a cool Packers helmet with a shell date of 1973. NOT a lot of outer shell wear but the inside suspension shows nice wear. I like the decals because they appear to be original to the helmet because of the glue outline, probably shrinkage from age, around the Packers logos.

Beautiful Packers helmet, love seeing the 60's and early 70's equipment. You have a top of the line collection. Do you have any vintage Colts items? Seems there is not alot out there that i have seen.

Appreciate it Jason!

BTW does anyone know how many helmets a player uses during a season? I'm assuming 1, maybe 2 at the most but that's why I'm asking (ha)

Love the Robert Quinn lid even if a little "oversized." Nice pick up from a former UNC Tar Heels player! I recall his playing days with Carolina.

Super nice helmets sjsinohio! Unfortunately though, it looks like the decals were replaced at sometime. The one on your helmet are consistant with the 92-96 redesign. Here is a pic of the difference. Slight difference, but, as you can see, a more simpler design then their 70's - 80's version pictured on the left. A lot of people are unaware of these changes, so I just thought I would share. However, this doesn't mean the helmet isn't original, and I would never suggest otherwise.

Thanks for the info, abstractheory (http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/member.php?u=5530). I guess they kept those old PAC-3 helmets around for quite some time. The helmet is actually dated 1978 so I should have described the helmet as a late 1970's vs. mid 1970's. It didn't have a facemask on it when I got it so I put on one that fit the existing drill holes. I should put a white facemask on it.
