I have been waiting to pick up a nice Dwight Evans bat for awhile now and I finally have it. I also think I might have found a photo match to this baseball card (1979 card). Look at the number 24 on the bottom. It is a perfect match and the tape right above his right hand looks correct as well. Maybe????

Also to help me narrow down between 1978 and 1979 could you tell me if this is natural finish and double lacquer (1978) or Galen Finish with wide grain (1979). Thanks so much.

To be clear... I don' know what Galen finish looks like.

Goldy,

Galen is a reddish finish. See the photo of Todd Zeile.

As far as your Evans bat it looks like a photo match. The writing on the knob is a match in my opinion.

This is may be one of the first photo-matches to a bb card.

Nice bat.

That is correct. From the book Louisville Slugger by Vince Malta, "Galen finish-named for Paul Galen, a former plant employee. Basically a mistake, lacquer was mixed too light, making the bats a soft red to pinkish color." Your bat does not appear to have Galen finish.

Hi--

Depending on the length, it is either one of 6 bats ordered on 2/7/78 (35" / 35 oz) or one of 54 bats ordered between 2/7/78 and 7/24/78 (34.5" / 32 to 34 oz.)

I'd say it is a match. Look at the top of 2, there is a thicker portion from a possible mistake that is clearly evident on the card also.

I would agree with the other posters, the knob looks like a match to your bat. You can clearly see the black mark on the bottom of the knob, just like yours.

I'm a big Dwight Evans fan and I must admit I'm jealous of your purchase! :D You need to buy a copy of that card in nice shape to display with the bat, or at least I would. Congrats on a sweet bat and a really cool match.

And may I ask how much you paid? I only ask because I would LOVE to have a Dewey Red Sox bat for my collection too.

Great bat and photo match!!

Does anyone know if Dwight Evans ever had any bats made with his nickname "Dewey" engraved on the bats? I'd be interested in one for obvious reasons :)

I'm sure that it is a perfect photo match but I'd love to see a pic of how the label lines up with the 24 compared to the card.

I also think you've got a match. Awesome bat too. Congrats.

Thanks for the responses guys... appreciated!

Ted, email me if you are interested in my purchase price. It was an ebay purchase and I have been waiting for a good one to pop up. Thanks to Tim at HOF bats for helping me verify the year.

I was so tempted in bidding on this bat. It had such a sick tape job. I just couldnt get myself to spend that much on it. Its a sweet bat and a great looking photo match. Never seen an older bat matched on a bb card. Thats great.
