I'm looking to buy a Pete Rose game used home Reds jersey. Circa 1984-1986. I'm hoping to own one by this coming April. I would want one that carries as much provenance with it as possible.

If you know of a collector that has one, and think he may part with it, please help me by putting me in contact with them. If you yourself own one, and may look to part with it, please leave me your email and we can begin discussing a possible deal.

I would not rule out an earlier era Pete Rose Reds gamer ('70's), if it displayed a fair amount of use.

Thank you.

It is difficult to find a 1984-6 Pete Rose jersey that displays strong use because 1) he played in only 26 games for the Reds in 1984; 2) he seemingly cycled through a large number of home jerseys in 1985; and 3) he played in only 72 games for the Reds in 1986.

That's part of the attraction to those particular years. It may take quite some time to find one, the hunt is part of the thrill :) An 84-86 is my preference, but I would never be against owning a 73-78 Rose jersey :)

I've seen a good number of Rose jerseys come up and have passed on them for several reasons, eventually I will find the one I want to purchase, own and display. There's one here on the boards that I am comfortable with, owned by another member. Hopefully he'll decide to sell one day.

Sorry for the new thread, just found my old one. :(

Still looking for a Rose game from 84-86. I wouldn't mind one from 73-78 either.

I just read in one of Rose's books that he wore 9 different Reds jerseys in his record setting game in 1985. By 1985 Rose knew he could sell his stuff for good money and so he did this kind of thing. Compared to other seasons, there are a lot of 1985 home Rose jerseys out there.

Very true. He was one of, if not the first, who started the whole "wear a jersey for 1/2 an inning" deal...then sell it.

Which book was that? I believe that he wore three Reds home jerseys in the 4192 hit game. The 1986 Topps Pete Rose set of 120 cards includes a card that shows the three jerseys. Pete gave the one that he was wearing when he broke Cobb's record to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. He gave another to Marge Schott, the Reds majority owner. He kept the third and later displayed it in his Boynton Beach, FL, restaurant.

As far as I know Rose did not wear multiple jerseys in any other game and did not sell jerseys (through middle men) that were worn in particular games.

I think the primary reason that there are a lot of 1985 Pete Rose Red home jerseys is that Rose ordered extras to give away (new and unused) to all the people who were meeting with him during the runup to his record-breaking hit and wanted a hat, bat, jersey, etc.

I have heard that, after the 1985 season, some extras (maybe one or two dozen) were also sold to the public (for something like $100) at card shows by his friend and business associate Whitey Willenborg.

I am reading that book now and saw how he wore the 9 jerseys in certain games. Think there was a whole chapter about how much he loved money and would sell all sorts of memorabilia and make any trip to card shows for cash (still true). One story that sums up Pete Rose, he won some kind of diamond belt, think it was an award at the time. Ended up taking all the diamonds out and selling it to a big sports collector.

Hustle: The Myth, Life, and Lies of Pete Rose is the title of the book. If you are a huge Rose fan, may not be your favorite book but it is very interesting.

Legit Rose jerseys are pretty hard to find. Generally, home jerseys are more scarce than roads. Overall, 1985 Reds home jerseys are the easiest to find, and 1989 Reds home jerseys are the next easiest. Chuck

FYI, this past weekend I read Rose's Playboy interview from May 2000 and he confirmed what I said in my post dated January 2nd.
