Hello-
Can a Forum reader/Rangers collector please respond to the following:

Who wore uniform #1 in 2001 and 2002?

Likewise, who wore #9 in 2001?

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks.

According to Jack Looney's book on uniform numbers, nobody wore #1 for the Rangers in 2001. Steve Smith, a coach, wore it in 2002. Looney's book only covers the major lg team; could the #1 be from a minor league affiliate?

Chad Curtis wore #9 in 2001.

According to the Rangers website, however, Smith was with the Brewers in 2001/2:

Outfielder Chad Curtis wore # 9 for 38 games with Texas in 2001.

Interesting....

I checked Smith's line in the back of the book, and they list the following for him:

Smith, Steve: CH (coach); SEA #2 1996-1997; SEA #10 1998-1999; TEX #1, 2002-2005.

I wonder if the bio got the years off by one and meant that he spent 2000-2001 with the Brewers (as a roving minor league guy, he wouldn't get listed in Looney's book for those seasons), not 2001-2002. It would fit in exactly with all of Looney's info.
