Forum Readers-
I have been offered an extremely rare Mark McGwire bat, and would appreciate the "bat experts" opinion on the current market value.

It is a 1992 McGwire Adirondack, model 256B, green ring. Stamped on the bat is "1992 ACLS MARK MCGWIRE ATHLETICS" The knob reads 256B MM (void of the usual batch/year code, as is the norm for post season bats).

On a scale of 1-10 (10 the extreme) for use, it shows about 5 and is uncracked.

The bat was originally purchased many years ago from a Lelands auction.

What is the current market value on such a bat?

I am quite versed in his jerseys and other equipment, however, would appreciate hearing back from those of you who deal in bats.

Thanks.

Howard,

I'm assuming this is the bat?:

http://www.lelands.com/bid.aspx?lot=858&auctionid=112

December 2001
Lot 858 . 1992 Mark McGwire A.L.C.S.Game Used Bat, Signed (34.5") Yeah, Big Mac gamers are tough, and signed ones are significantly tougher, but a playoff bat? Forget about it! This great Rawlings 256B shows definite use from the Athletics' losing effort, with "1992 ALCS, Mark McGwire, Oakland A's" in block on the barrel. Black sharpie signature is NRMT. Number "25" in marker on the knob.
Reserve: $1,000
Number of Bids: 8
Price Realized: $2,465.13

I'd assume the value either held constant or dipped a little due to his "I'm not here to talk about the past" debacle? (It would seem that McGwire fetched a higher price in 2001 than he would now).
I have some trouble seeing how it could sell for more than $2400, but then again I don't buy or sell bats.

Rudy.

Rudy-
The bat I'm offered is not signed and does not have his 25 on the knob. I do find it rather interesting that this one has his 25 on the knob and is signed, the one I'm offereed has no # and is not signed.

I was told by several dealers/collectors that the current value of the bat I described is between $1,200-$1,500.

Thanks for the continued great work.

Howard, I would agree with that price, probably at the lower end. I would like to point out that I have a McGwire A's bat that doesn't have the number 25 on it, and when Dave Bushing looked at it he notated that putting 25 on was a distinct habit of Mac's; that is, he was iffy on my bat. I've seen others without the 25, though, and wonder if anyone else has some input?

The value will continaully decline as the steroid controversy reaches a boiling point around Big Mac's HOF eligibility.

Randall Hahn has some interesting notes about McGwire bats at:

click on "Collector's Monthly".

(By the way, did you know that www.mcgwire.net (http://www.mcgwire.net) will take you to Ebay?!).
