According to M&N, the tagging on this jersey was first used starting in 2001. Ted Williams was 83 when he could have first allegedly signed this jersey.

Ted's autograph was pretty shaky the last few years of his life, and he died in July of 2002.

What is your opinion about the authenticity of this autograph?

Whether you are right or wrong does not matter, just state an opinion on the autograph being real or a forgery.

Having collected Ted Williams autographed memorabilia, It looks to be legit pre-stroke autograph. Are you sure about the M&N tagging date?

Bobby

When considering the quality and authenticity of the Ted Williams "alleged" autograph shown above, consider these facts.

February 1994: Williams suffers a stroke that limits his vision, mobility, and *handwriting*.

July 13, 1999: Williams gets Fenway Park ovation when introduced to throw out first pitch at the All-Star Game. (Ted could barely walk or stand and was confined to a wheelchair.)

November 2000: Williams has a pacemaker inserted in his chest to regulate his heartbeat.

January 2001: Undergoes open-heart surgery. (This is the earliest year Ted could "allegedly" sign this jersey with his pre-stroke autograph from the 1980s to early 1990s era.)

July 5, 2002: Williams dies at age 83 of cardiac arrest at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, Fla.

April 28, 2007: Jimmy Spence (JSA) authenticates the Ted Williams autograph on the jersey shown above as genuine. Certification No. B37471

Baseball legend Ted Williams smiles as he shakes the hands of All-Star players Tuesday, July 13, 1999 at Fenway Park in Boston, as he arrived to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the All-Star Game.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Phil Castinetti, owner of New England-based Sportsworld on ESPN Sports Business (July 9, 2002):

In 1999, Williams made his final public appearance at the All-Star game at Fenway Park. "I saw him sign there, and he could barely write; his signature was a scribble."

Noted autograph expert James Spence of PSA/DNA states on ESPN Sports Business (July 9, 2002)

If Williams' signature at the 1999 All-Star game looked erratic it could be *because as he got older, Williams became more erratic in signing.*

I understand it is difficult to sign a jersey, so you shouldn't nit-pick at every little "problem" with a jersey signature. With that being said, the "T" in Ted seems to have a couple of problems.

Any item signed by Ted that late in life should have provenance of some sort. Sure, back in the 80s and 90s Williams was still signing autographs for fans on the street.... But in 2001-2002? Highly unlikely.

An uninformed individual paid 1257.00 for this jersey.

It would have been just as real with a Donald Frangipani or Christopher Morales Certificate of Authenticity.

What a shame.

This photo shows me with Ted on January 18th, 2000 in his hotel room. He signed several auto's this evening and the quality looked very good considering his health. I realize this was before the jersey in question. http://www.gameuseduniverse.com/vb_forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=11210&d=1202072676

Same night in Ted's room just after signing a baseball for this fan.....I think a well rested Ted could sign a limited amount of auto's with semi good quality at least in 2000.

Is that George Bush or a guy that looks just like him?

That, of course, would be a young looking George Bush. I am always amazed at how much the President's office will age someone.
