Adirondack Bat Stamping Use

Hey all,

Does anyone know how often Adirondack used older stampings on newer bats? The pictured bat is a Reggie Jackson bat has the Adirondack/Rawlings barrel label for a mid-1980s bat (except I don't think the Made in USA was on the label at that time) but the stamping on the know indicates a 1995 manufacturer date. Did someone else order a 288RJ model in 1995 and they used the old style stamping or would they have made it with the 1995 stamping?

That looks more like an 85 to me.

The labeling period is from 83-86. During that time "Made IN USA" was not present on the labeling. "MADE IN USA" appear prior to 83 labeling during the 71-79, 80-82 labeling periods.

I agree with Ken it looks like a 85 which would coincide with the centerbrand labeling. The presence of the MADE IN USA on the labeling is a concern.

One thing which also strikes me about the knob is that there is an enormous amount of laquer on it. Most Rawlings Adrondacks I've seen did not have that much laquer on the knob.

Perhaps it was a replica or show bat order by Jackson during that time. Rawlings may have made special bats for Jackson to give away for charity, gifts,etc. They have been known to do this with post season bats.

I have an `84 Gwynn Rawlings that does NOT have the "made in USA" featured. I also believe that during 1980-1999 Rawlings gamers had only one digit as a reference to the year of production, or manufacture. Three digits for the batch code, followed by a single digit for the Year. My 1984 Bat has "279H 284 4" My Bat also has very little Laquer on it, possibly none on the knob.
I don`t understnd the bat shown here, possibly a "Promo" Bat.

Correction, 1980-1989 Rawlings have only one digit for the year code. 1990 would be stamped 90

I thought that the 1980s year code was a single digit and the 90s had two digits? The knob and lower 6 inches is laquered and then it is rubbed to the paint line. It does have rack marks. I just need to make sure because I want to use it.

You are absolutely right. The 80's Rawlings has single digit year codes and started double digits in 1990. I totally forgot about that.

However I do have a 1993 SCD column Gone Bats by Michael Montbriand on 84-87 Adirondack bat labeling in which he shows a Boggs model 288RJ with W.B. 1985 stamped on the knob. Boggs was known to use 288RJ model Adirondacks early in his career so evidently variations do exist. Typically you would see player initials and or year stamps on postseason
bats.

However this Jackson's MADE in USA is a real oddity since this was taken off the labeling in 83 two years prior to 85.
