orioles03 - I don't know that I would call it common, but this isn't the first helmet I've gotten with a shield that was removed but with a visible outline remaining (which gives me comfort). This helmet also has the little number squares that the Chargers use on the chinstrap removed (again with outline remaining), none of which is a big deal to me - I just needed the style for my collection and trust my knowledge and the source. Thanks for sharing your info.

my chin strap was an adams chinstrap but riddell was printed overtop of the adams also there is a #80 written on the inside and 02-07 under the padding .the helmet is cracked on the top looks like he got mad and threw it it also looks like the outline of the #21 sean taylor decal it looks like these helmets scratch up easy there is a scratch on the earhole with grass stains inside the scratch it is an awesome helmet but first nfl i havee ever seen cracked but from working on the visitors sidlines at ravens game it would not be to hard to realize how they crack helmets it would have to be thrown pretty hard it also make me feel better

orioles03 - yeah, the pictures don't show it, but this helmet is all scratched up to. Small pieces of logo, flag, facemask have also been knocked off from contact. The metallic paint is "cracked" on the front, which makes sense from a long-snapper getting hit the way he would and one of the shock blockers is cracked too - like yours, it is an awesome helmet. Above the right earhole 50 is written as well (kind of under the pads). Don't know if you can see in the pictures, but this also has the mouth-piece still attached to the mask. Look at Getty Images and you'll see a good Binn picture with "possibly" this helmet (same style mask, mouth-piece, etc). The Taylor memorial is gone here too, but that doesn't surprise me because I heard (on TV I think) as the season went on it was optional and some players kept it on and some took it off (except the Redskins). Post pictures of yours if you get a chance.

I picked up the following on Ebay.

- 58-60 Adirondack Gil Hodges signature model pro model bat (123S) S for the 33" smaller sized bat. Not a real gamer as Hodges used bats greater than 33" during his career. I think I did find a style match on the bat on Hodges offical website with this photo of Gil posing with a white letter adirondack.

- 1984 Howard Johnson post season bat. This is a model 381B with HOJo's initials HJ stamped under the model numbers. Adirondack post season (playoff and WS bats) from the early 80's are known to have the players initial stamped under the model number instead of the typical lot and year code. Nice Vintage HOJO signature and dated 12/28/1984!

Ryan Ludwick 2006 (possibly 2007 Rawlings) hammered.

Mike Lavalliere 1986 LS C271 (with a surprise on the knob) #51 was one of my favories - Willie McGee - bat came from Zane Burns, and as a bonus, it was $20. Willie favored the C271, and from what I have been told by other Cards collectors, he used the bats of others quite a bit, thinking they might have had better timber. Anyway, cool bat, great price.

Dave,

In his book, If At First, Keith Hernandez wrote that during the 82 World Series he was slumping and borrowed one of Willie McGee's model C271 bats and broke out of the slump. Ever since that series he stuck with C271's and made it his bat model of choice for the rest of his career.

Hernandez was very particular about his bats and once told Mets equipment manager Charlie Samuels that a bat was off by a less than an ounce. Samuels didn't believe him and was forced to weigh the bat and sure enough it was 31.5 oz verses the typical 32 oz weight.

I think if you ask Keith the C271 definitely had better quality wood!

I usually don't post my new stuff on the Forum, but I am so excited about my "May" pickup that I had to share it with you guys......just snagged a game worn glove from Jim Craig from his Boston University days. Jim is best known for his unbelievable goaltending in the 1980 Olympic Games. Glove came with ( 1 ) a signed letter from Jim stating that this was his game used glove ( 2 ) a signed picture of Jim wearing the glove post career and ( 3 ) a Boston University yearbook from the late 70's with a photomatch...........

I am absolutely stoked about this piece......who needs Mattingly bats!! Jim

Hey, Jim! Your name rang a bell when I saw this post, and I thought, Hey, I just sent that guy a check! Appropriate that it should be in this thread, as that Bob Melvin Yankees bat that I bought from you is one of my favorite pickups of the month, so far. BoMel wasn't with the Yanks for very long - 9 games, plus some time in AAA - so I can't imagine there are too many of those around; it's the first one I've seen, and I'm looking forward to getting ahold of it.

I just called Getty asked if I could buy an image. The Lady took the image number gave a price of $150. They than set me up with an account and put the image in my account. I emailed the image to a photo lab and printed out a 16x20, 8x10, 11x14. I felt $150 for a photomatch item of this quality, would be better than any authenticators letter!

Robert,

I found an 84 Tigers ball with an early Johnson signature. The "H" is very similar to the one on the bat. I think HoJo's signature did change over time. His HB signature which are stamped "Howard HoJo Johnson" from the ones i've seen are very similar to the autograph on the bat.

Regardless, I purchased the bat more for the fact that it was a 84 post season rather than the autograph.

Anyone else can find a sample of an early HOJO signature ?

Thanks
David

New Nationals bats. Only the Aaron Boone bat hologram shows up in the system and as I was told it was from Sunday's game when he hit his 1st HR as a National.

I am going to work on a photomatch!

I am hoping the Guzman was from his huge Saturday May 3rd game as he almost had a cycle w/ a HR and 6 RBI's!

Just filled a hole in my collection with this Gregg Jefferies SSK Professional Edge bat. This sig is pretty jacked up...so I may end up removing it altogether. Not used, but fits in right where it is supposed to - between Mark Whiten and Dimitri Young in my "90's Cardinals Favoirtes" rack.

I've been looking for one of these for over a year, and finally found it (got it as a hand picked birthday present:D).

Also found a style match---eventually found it on flikr, from September 1st 2005.

Congrats on the pick up ! I was wondering if you ended up winning the glove ...... I knew the bidding would go quite high , still a nice piece for the money spent .....

Didn't you already have a Gomes glove ? Or was that another forum member?

Nice collection of Tony Gwynn bats Nnunnari !

I have never seen a bat with the MLB Logo in red , white and blue like that ...

Is it a 1999 ?????

Did the players have to order them special ?

Pretty Cool !

Hey Brian (BMH) , can you share any info on the red , white and blue logo's????

If my memory serves me the bats did not come with a color logo but that Gwynn used to fill in the MLB logo with paint pen.

You guys have some amazing stuff!!! Do most of you focus on one team (your team) or do you just look for players you like or do you focus on players who had great careers (HOF'ers etc.)?

Thanks David,
Tony started coloring the mlb logos on some of his bats in '99 strictly out of boredom, in previous years he would sometimes draw rings around the upper handle/lower label area. I know Loumud also has a very nice Gwynn with the colored in logo.
He would also mess around with different tape jobs on the handle trying to find the most comfortable grip.

Bought a couple of items this month, but this one is worthy of adding to this thread. It's not a game worn jersey, but a screen worn jersey... Made by AIS, it's a wool jersey used in the "baseball scene" in the Sony motion picture "Hook" starring Robin Williams & Dustin Hoffman. Definitely one of the most unique pieces in my collection...

Here's an interesting one I just picked up, although not a game-used item.
When you consider that the first year that you could buy a Wilson retail authentic Bears jersey was 1986, and they switched to the plastic tagging in 1987, you have to come to the conclusion that this has to be one of the first true authentic "throwbacks".
I've run across several personalized 1986 "cloth tag" Wilsons, and of course a multitude of then-current player Wilson authentics but this is the first time I've seen an example of someone from back in '86 having the good sense to take advantage of the new-found ability to "create your own Bears jersey" and use it to highlight a former player.
Compared to the then-current player authentics and even the gamers from the day, the first thing that I notice is the sloppiness of the heat-pressing, specifically the thickness of the orange border on the letters and numbers. Also, the nameplate material is noticeably darker than the shoulder yoke fabric, something that you rarely see on gamers and first generation authentics. It's the correct fabric, it's just a darker shade of navy, like maybe the attention to detail on the custom-jobs wasn't quite what it was for the gamers and the current-player authentics, (which were completely identical).
Even still, it's a pretty interesting piece and a welcome addition to my Wilson stable.

Nolan ryan jersey I Received today from a private auction.

I am always skeptical of private auctions. Why would someone want to hide the high bidder's name from users? I am of the opinion that there is never a legitimate reason to hide the high bidder's name, especially with the new system of blocking names during a current auction.

For May I managed to pickup a new fav bat of mine. It has such nice woog grain and a great finish on it! And it was verified by BMH to be an official game issued bat. It is a Edgar Martinez Game Issued bat, who is a possibility for the HOF as he was one of the only hitters to have career marks of .300+ BA, .400+ OBP, .500+ SLGP, 500+ Doubles, 300+ HRs, and 2000+ BB's! I would imagine that a game issued bat like this is pretty rare especially since he is no longer playing.
