All,

In recent years, many of the 86 METS have returned to the team as special instructors during Spring Training, including Darryl Strawberry, Keith Hernandez, etc.

In some cases, the former player was given his original uniform number. For example, Darryl Strawberry wore #18. In other cases, they took a different number - one usually given to a non-roster invitee. For example, I have a 2003 game used BP jersey of former catcher John Stearns. The number on it is "83." I also have a 2005 game used BP of Howard Johnson. The number on that one is equally strange... 88.

I know Sid Fernandez has made some appearances in Port St. Lucie as a special instructor in recent years. I cannot find any more information other than that he was there. Would anyone know what uniform number he might have worn or where I would be able to go to get such information?

Many thanks,
Nick

This is not an answer to your question, but it reminded me of when Sid was on the Vero Beach Dodgers. I saw him throw a no-hitter at Dodgertown. If my memory is correct (it was probably 82 or 83) I think the only thing that kept him from a perfect game was a hit batter. Sid had some nasty stuff back in the day.

Nick,

Are you questioning this jersey? I don't have an answer for you. Strange that no. 3 would be assigned to Sid Fernandez though.

David,

Yes, that's the jersey. I am very confused over the #3.

You're talking about 2005-2007? If so, where did you find this information?

I have no idea why El Sid would be issued #3 for a 2005-2007 era jersey. The only thing I can come up with is that Duaner Sanchez wore #50 while on the 2006 Mets roster. Maybe a coach wore #50 for the 2005 and 2007 seasons?

El Sid lives here on Oahu, and I would love to meet him one day.

Rex, when did he wear #10? That would be a great jersey to have!

Kind Regards,

Ron.

Ron,

Rex is absolutely right. I remember he did wear number 10 for a short time. Here's a 87 card which shows Ed Sid in a 87 pre-game no 10 jersey.

This is a great site for Mets uniform numbers (Mets by the numbers).

According to this info, Manny Acta wore 50 in 2005, Sanchez 2006, 2008. (2007 he was injured).

Miguel Cairo wore no. 3 in 2005, Acta in 2006, and current owner Easley from 2007-present

Guys,

It still doesn't make much sense. The jersey, though tagged as a 2005-2007, can only be from 2005 or 2006, as 2007 saw the introduction of those cheaper BPs with the horrible heat pressed numbers. It couldn't be from 1 year prior because the Mets wore orange during 2004 spring training.

So, with the jersey just bearing the possibility of being a 2005 or a 2006, and #s 3 and 50 being taken by Acta, Cairo and Sanchez during that timespan, how could Sid Fernandez have worn it too? To the best of my knowledge, no two players wore the same number on field at the same time.

I do know that El Sid was a special instructor at Spring Training, but do not know what number he would have been assigned.

Could it be a leftover from a Mets Fantasy camp that year. Perhaps it got into the inventory at Spring Training.

Just a thought.

Nick,

I found a photo of Strawberry with a pre-game no. 18 taken during spring training of 2005.

That Fernandez no. 3 is definitely not Sid Fernandez.

I was also looking at others on the Steiner site yesterday and had similar questions...

1. Edgardo Alfonzo #7 - Again, a 2005-2006 spring training or BP jersey. Alfonzo played for the Giants in 05 and the Angels/Blue Jays in 06. He was then signed to a Mets minor league contract in July 2006. He was never called up to the majors. My first thought is that this couldn't be his jersey. Then I thought could this possibly Edgar Alfonzo's (minor league son of the Brooklyn Cyclones manager) jersey from Spring Training? I don't remember him getting an invite, as he would have been A or AA. I also couldn't figure why they would even give out a #7 jersey with Reyes on the team anyway.

2. Kevin Mitchell #2 - I have found no evidence of Mitch even being a part of spring training either of the 2005 or 2006 seasons. If so, why #2? I don;t think he ever used that number.

3. Eddie Murray #33 - Right number; however, I cannot find any information as to him being with the Mets at Spring Training. He had odd jobs as hitting instructors for the Indians and Dodgers during this era. I can't seem to find anything else out on him.

Great investigative work, guys! As usual, the forum members came through with their homework and research. That #10 Fernandez is a nice jersey!

Kind Regards,

Ron.
