Question about jersey restorations

In terms of value how much does it hurt for a pre 1980's jersey of a Hall of Famer to have the name plate restored?

Rose14 -- I would say that it depends upon the jersey and the condition. Has the nameplate been removed from the jersey completely? Is it there and you just want to replace parts of it due to discolor/sun fade/etc.? Was the jersey recycled whereby another nameplate was placed on top of it or other letters sewn on?

TNT- The jerseys in question are a 1978 and 1979 San Diego Padres Dave Winfield jerseys. Both jerseys have had the nameplates removed and put back on. The nameplates appears original but you can tell on both jerseys where it has been replaced. The 1978 jersey is also missing the All-Star patch. From what I understand these two jersey were supposed to be sent down to the minors after the season but were stopped but only after the nameplates and patch had been removed. Both of these jerseys come from an employee with the Padres.

I am not sure what you want to do here. You say that the nameplates that appear to be original have been put back on... Are you looking to just do something cosmetic to cover tha damage caused by taking them off in the first place? If so, I would be inclinded to leave them alone. If you replace the nameplates completely, you not only lose the "all original" (assuming that they legitimately are the original nameplates) but you will likely replace it with a nameplate that is significantly newer than the numbers below it, and believe me, that mismatch would be far greater an eyesore than a little damage around the border of the nameplate.

Here is a picture of the 1978 Winfield jersey. The name plate was once removed and I am not sure if another players name plate was put on but the Winfield has been put back on. From what I understand the Winfield name plate is original. The jersey just shows the stitching marks where the name plate was removed as you can see in the photo. The jersey also has the All-Star patch removed from the sleeve. Even though the possible original name plate was put back on the jersey shows an alteration from the where it was originally removed which would make the jersey an altered jersey.

I know an unaltered Winfield jersey from this year would be worth $5-8k I am trying to find out how much this jersey would be worth now with this alteration.

Those are very nice!!! I'll focus on the yellow jersey, as I can see great detail on it. My thoughts (of course without seeing it in person):
The nameplate color matches the jersey very well; the threading matches as well; the lettering appears to be a match too. This is all very likely (if the nameplate came from another Winfield jersey, there couldn't possibly be very many out there... this wasn't 2007...). As to why the nameplate doesn't quite match up (it appears to be short) -- it is possible that the edges of the nameplate were cut up when removed originally and then trimmed before being placed back on. Course that would not cover up or even line up with the outline of the nameplate removal. Was another put on? I wouldn't think so, but anything is possible. Could the outline you see on the jersey be from the other (if it is so) nameplate? Who knows. My thoughts at this time are that you have yourself a jersey that likely has all original pieces (minus the patch) but a flaw as a result of the recycling attempt.

Not sure if you're familiar with my 1979 Al Holland Giants jersey. I had the same problem -- nameplate had been removed so that the jersey could be recycled, but the nameplate was later found. I wanted to reapply it but the edges were ripped by razor blades, and it really was not recoverable. Instead, nameplate material from that era was located (thanks Lon), it was a good match to the jersey (this in itself is a rarity), and the letters were taken off the original nameplate and placed onto the new one. All threads had to be removed off the back numbers to match the new threads on the letters. End result -- the "new" nameplate made of old material but carrying the original letters for that jersey; covered the outline of the removal; all new stitching. Jersey LOOKS GREAT aesthetically, but is further from "all original" status. From my point of view, I like it this way, but it likely decreases the value of the jersey.
