Hello Forum Readers-
Can an Orioles collector please confirnm what the correct tagging in a 1993 home jersey should look like?

I believe it should be a small white tag with deep navy screeneing, 93-1. Note, not the entire year of 1993, just the two digits. It should not have the entire year, 1993-1.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Howard:
I have four 1993 jerseys in the collection. Two came directly from the Orioles, and are noted below with (T) Two from other sources.
Oquist Home: tagged 93-1 / small tag bottom left of Russell tag (T)
Oates Road: tagged 93-2 / small tag bottom left of Russell tag (T)
Valenzuela Road: tagged 93 / slightly larger tag bottom left of Russell tag
(I have my doubts about this jersey, but I'm not sure it's fake either. It's one of my earlier buys from eBay. Someday, I'll put it up for the group to have a look at)
Pennington Alt: tagged 93-1 / longer tag centered under Russell tag

The lettering on my tags appears black to me, and raised, like a well printed business card. The tags are cloth, not paper. The All-Star patch and the trim around "Orioles" the numbers and Pennington's name appears to be silver. I don't know if that's the proper color, or if the black bled through the white. (The Pennington has been laundered many, many times.)

I can add photos later. Won't have access to a digital camera until the weekend.

As always, thanks for the post.

The reason I made the post is to determine if the following is genuine:

http://vintageauthentics.at.truition.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=66315638&prmenbr=57735959&aunbr=66662348

I have Ripken's 1993 home set 1 jersey. It is tagged 93-1. It came directly from the Kirby Puckett Pool Tourney, and is no doubt, legit. It also is autographed, and came with the matching pants.

How about these Ripken pants:
http://vintageauthentics.at.truition.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=66315788&prmenbr=57735959&aunbr=66662498

I have 3 pairs of Ripken pants. My 1993 homes are tagged with the same type of screened info as the 1993 jersey, and read "8 RIPKEN 37/39-3-93-1". My 1997 home pants are Russell with the paper like tag. Screened in faded black print is 8 RIPKEN 37/40-34-97"

I purchased over 200 pairs of game worn Orioles pants directly from the team. years included 1987-2002. I have NEVER seen a pair of Ripken gamers marked with a simple 8 in black marker, let alone any of the 40 man roster players pants void of a set/year tag.

I have no idea how MEARS can write a letter on these pants, attributing them to Cal Ripken.

Any thoughts?

To the best of my knowledge:

In terms of Russell jerseys, the Orioles used a 2-digit format to represent the year on their tagging from 1992-95. In 1996 and onwards, they switched to a 4 digit format.

I don't like the tagging on the jersey, and I really don't like the nameplate. All of my Orioles 1993 jerseys have nameplates that are angled at the ends...longer on the top than on the bottom. This one does not appear to. Also, you have to look hard to see the All Star patch on this jersey. How is it that these people take less care in photographing a jersey with an opening bid of $750 than I do in shooting one that has a $150 buy-it-now? It's their job...all this is for me is a sick hobby!

I had remembered this post from a time ago and I had e-mailed Howard right after it was posted. I'm not so sure that Orioles did not have 1993-1 tagging.. I personally owned at the time this was posted a Harold Reynolds #25 jersey from the 1993 season and it had a 1993-1 tag. In the Sotheby's auction there was a Black Cal Ripken jersey for sale from the Barry Halper auction and it had the 1993-1 tagging.. and today on ebay I found this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=009&item=190024164528&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

you can clearly see for yourself the 1993-1 tagging. Are you guys sure gamers were not tagged like this?

Here's another one and this one is from Kim Stigall...:

It may not have been right to say they were never tagged this way...

And another ...

I'm not an O's expert, but it's hard to imagine why anyone would fake a Mike Pagliarulo shirt.

I have the 93 game used Mike Pagliarulo Orioles jersey/helmet on Ebay. I obtained both items from the O's winter sale in Baltimore. I never had either item authenticated but assume they are both authentic gamers of Mike's. As someone said, who would fake a Pagliarulo item? I have other Pagliarulo gamers, Yankees included, but none authenticated by anyone. I am not a jersey expert by far, but to the best of my knowledge, this O's jersey and helmet are 100% real and were used by Mike in 93. I never washed the jersey let alone altered it. The tagging in the tail is as it was the day I bought it. There are no runs in the patch, nor silverish coloring anywhere. I hope this helps anyone who may have had any questions about my jersey. Thanks, Jody

also, I forgot to mention that the tagging in the tail appears to me to be black and not blue.

Howard:
Never really took a look at the pants before today...I've never seen evidence of Cal Ripken walking onto the field wearing unhemmed pants. Even if--for some reason--he had to get a spare pair of pants, they'd be hemmed, have elastic, and some kind of team tagging.
Too, bad, those are my size, and I could use a fresh pair of game pants right about now...for about $20, not $800! :D
