I would like to see your NFL jerseys. It does not have to be star players. Some of the jerseys I like best in my collection are considered common players. Here is a couple of jerseys that I have not show before.

The Kevin Greene jersey is from 93. I did not get this one from Kevin but had him look at it and he said it was definately his. He always wore a size 50 +6.

The Alstott is from 2003. It was worn vs the Panthers on 9-14-03 and vs the Falcons 9-21-03. It has nice wear on the shoulder that makes it easy to photo match. It is a size 50.

Here's a couple of vintage Giants jerseys I just picked up. Both are Sand-knit jerseys - one is mesh, the other is a double-knit/cotton. Both have sewn on numbers and at this point, I am still trying to determine the exact years but, from the Sand-knit tags, they both seem to be from the early 1970's.

I regret selling this jersey. 1970 Glen Holloway (first season with NOB). Well-used durene, with many repair marks. I got a good price, but it hurts to look at the photos...

BTPH,
The Holloway jersey is a great one.

Jim,
Attached are a couple of photos of what I believed was a Y.A. Tittle, Giant jersey, that I bought years ago. Tagging is gone. It as about 6 repairs on it. From what I can see in pictures the font is from the late 50's. After all these years I have yet to convince myself, one way or another, that it is a real Tittle. What do you think? I keep thinking I'll frame it and put it on the wall. As a kid he was one of my favorites.

Here is a London Fletcher jersey with nice use one game use. He has to be the roughest player in the NFL today. It was used vs the Vikings 10/1/06. It has team paperwork and photo matches. The collar tag is 02, which I see often with Bills jerseys. It had been team washed when I got it.

34swtns,

Thats a nice Jimmy Mac. What is the size.

Mchmaj,

I've got 2 Montana's, I know Lund has a nice one too. We probably should start a Montana only thread.

Look at this 97 Steve Young. I have 2. I decided to sell one a while back and sent it to a auction house. It was given to me by Kevin Greene who acquired it directly from Young after the Buc's game, the first 49er name Kevin played in. Kevin tagged the jersey with a piece of tape. I did not try to photo match it as I knew it was real and did not question it. This jersey was refuse by the authenicator due to the fact it had a number change. He said that would not happen with Young. I was stunned at this. So I took 5 minutes and went to Getty. Here is what I found, a exact photo match (72574059) to the number change. It told me that not much time was spent checking out the story on this jersey. You be the authenicator. Would you say OK?

Thanks RKG. Jimbo wore size 42 through the '86 season and moved up to size 44 after the shoulder injury. I also have an '87 season Jimbo size 44 home game-issued that came from the team via a charity auction. The away gamer was obtained from a McMahon family member.

That Montana is amazing, mchmaj.

Nice photo match on the Young, too, RKG. No doubt in my humble mind that's the real deal.

Jim

I found both jerseys digging around eBay. The 46 jersey is currently being offered on eBay because in the last week or so, I located the #90 jersey and I am keeping the #90 jersey for myself.

Thanx to Mark Hayne for helping me to research the #46 jersey.

Here's one of my favorites, a 1970's Rawlings Steelers helmet. It's well used, has the paper thin logo which has been sliced and even some orange paint transfer (Browns, Bengals ?). The clips are very brittle too, I'm sure they will break soon:( .

drj:

that's a beautiful lid! i'm a sucker for rawlings helmets - especially hnd, ridge and headliner (lambert) modles. i must have over 30 vintage rawlings helmets in my collection, many of which i want to some day refurbish to their glory days - i have about a dozen ridge helmets, about 8 or so hnd non-ridge helmets and about 10 or so headliners. i also have various other rawlings models - just love them!

your looks to be a vintage hnd9, similar to the game used mullins lid pictured below and the steeler hnd9 game helmet which was turned into a lamp that is also pictured. the mullins lid sold for $2k and the lamp went for a steal on ebay a few months ago, $380.

i've also included photos of some of my helmets although, unfortunately, i don't have photos readily available of my better ones...

mullins game used:

authentic vintage steelers hnd9 that was made into a lamp and dressed with incorrect clps and facemask:

a few of my own - a game used colts ridge (facemask doesn't belong to the helmet)...

a game used broncos helmet - this is an hnd9 ridge helmet although it's hard to see the ridge because of the facemask...

drj - i forgot to ask if you wouldn't mind adding a few more photos of your helmet including a shot of the inside. also, can you make out the date of your helmet on the back?

btw, looking at the steelers alltime rsoter the following players wore number 28 during the era of your lid (roughly):

ocie austin db, 1970-1971
alvin maxson rb, 1977-1978

according to the steeler's website, no player wore number 28 from 1972-1976....

DrJ & Aeneas,

You guys been holding out on us, nice helmets. I always liked helmets but did not know enough to buy. I know enough, from talking to players, that most never get out. You guys have cost me some money by putting your knowledge out there and making me think I half way know enough to buy now.

Attached are pictures of the Maynard helmet I got from AMI.

I would like to add a quality St. Louis Cardinal helmet to my collection if anyone knows of one. I saw Larry Wilson's sell a few years ago, that is the one I would like.

Thanks for the close photo of the Jurgensen tag. I would like to own that jersey.

It is a HND9 and is dated December 1975, which means it wouldn't have been used until 1976 at the earliest. I've always assumed that it belonged to Alvin Maxson who wore #28 in 1977-78. I think I got a good deal at $299 :D (but that was about 10+ years ago). I only owned one ridge helmet over the years (SMU) but sold it, I didn't realize how rare it was at the time. I must admit that I've just learned by trial and error over the years (yes, been burned many a time) - but aeneas is by far the most knowledgable helmet dude I've encountered - I do apprecieate your insight and help.

beantown - I don't know where a mask like that is for sale, but I'll try to keep it in mind if I see one. Unlike aeneas, my helmets are mostly from the 80's to the present day, but I need to pick up some vintage ones to add to my collection.

rkgibson - you can't go wrong with that Maynard, that was a great pickup.

aeneas - here is the inside photo you requested. It's not as shiny white as the photo shows, it's stained from use.

I'd love a great Steeler helmet like that! Back to jerseys...it's been an expensive month but I couldn't resist the chance to pick these up. Many of you likely saw these on an earlier post and they turned up better than advertised. The Falcon logo on the '66-67 jersey is THREE layer tackle twill. Black on white on red. The design is at least a decade ahead of its time. The 1970 black one is pristine, having been worn by a special-teams player whose career stats are one carry for 8 yards. That explains the single solitary team repair on it. I might unload one of the two eventually just to fund some other items (the seller sold these two as a set), but they are a treat to have for sure!

genius
11-24-2007, 08:06 PM
This is the main reason for the expensive month but I never thought I'd see one like it. Tons of repairs and still bright white with original tags, numerals still black, stitching in place, nameplate perfect, sleeves full-length and uncut, from the Super Bowl IX season when they had the "Packer style" 5's on the jerseys. Supposedly stored away by the family all these years and it does look like it came right out of the locker room. Hopefully frees up my other 70s away one for a trade on a home jersey!

This is one of those common players jerseys that typlifies what "game used" is all about. It is one of the first jerseys I bought. I have put it in a couple of auctions, when I thin my collection, but it never meets my reserve. When I get it back I look at it and remember why it is a great jersey.

Dana Stubblefield must have worn this jersey most of the '93 season. It came with a team cert that states it was worn 1/23/94 in the NFC championship game vs the Cowboys. I have photo matched it to the game 11/28/93 vs the Rams also. It is literally hammered all over. It is covered with repairs. It has unrepaired damage. Look at the wear on the sleeve screens. It has neck, tail & sleeve modifications. Look at the repair technique used for rips. This jersey has it all.

The flag date is F (93) U (July).

The '93 jerseys had the Wilson logo is on the front of both sleeves.

rkgibson -

i followed the maynard auction and, i have to say, imo you purchased one of the most spectacular game used helmets made available in recent memory - i mean that lid is an absolute beauty. even though i have never been a jets fan, i've always had a soft spot for the jets of that era; namath, maynard, snell, boozer... the list goes on. and i've especially had a soft spot for game used jets helmets from that era, the rk and tk suspension helmets.

here's a nice photo i have of maynard that you can download and print out - it would look nice next to your lid!

speaking of steelers helmets earlier, here's another offering from "menace to helmet collecting society" ebayer flipsyr... a no value, older non-pro model maxpro lid with cheap vinyl padding that he's equipped with off the ebay rack reproduction steelers decals. and he's trying to pass it off as as a vintage game used steelers helmet. while it's true that the steelers were known to wear maxpro helmets at one time, it was the maxpro k21 clearshell pro model with leather padding that they sported.

flipsyr's clumsy "game used" knockoff...

drj - thanks very much for posting a photo of the inside of your helmet; it's a real gem and imho a steal at $300 - even 10 years ago! want to hear something rather jaded? whenever i come across rare gems such as your steelers helmet or look at some of the beauties in my own collection i'm always reminded that they will forever be very valuable items, will always fetch very strong dollar amounts. not only because of obvious reasons such as their sheer rarity and authenticity will ensure their value, which is true, but also because there will always be unscrupulous buyers that will immediately recognize them as rare helmets that could very easily be turned into "game used" finds worn by a hall of famer; immediately recognize them as $1,000-$2,000 investments which could reap $5,000+ once altered and authenticated (which i have no doubt they would be). pretty jaded, eh?

Aeneas,

Thanks for the kind words on the Maynard helmet. Also the time it took to post the picture. I do believe that is the helmet I have. I had to pay a lot for it. With that being said, it is real , that is the bottom line. The fact that it was worn by a great player is just extra.

I had a real good Cardinal helmet that was worn by Irv Goode. It came directly from him. I still have one of his jerseys. During a divorce in '99 I was forced to sell a lot of my collection and the helmet was one of the things to go.

B1SON - I assume your asking about the Pats helmet that aeneas posted. I have no way of knowing who it belonged to, but it doesn't look like the mask I remember Nelson wearing. I'm on the lookout for a Pats helmet myself - player doesn't matter.

aeneas - yes, I think the old helmets (and jerseys for that matter) will always command a nice price. I wish I had purchased more vintage helmets when I started collecting years ago instead of the 80's and 90's models I bought. I've really seen some gems over the years. But honestly I was collecting and not investing, so that's why I stuck to the cheaper, more modern helmets at the time. I still think most helmets are a good investment as long as teams don't over-saturate the market (but I can see that happening). As for unscrupulous people, your right about that. I bet my Alvin Maxson would fetch top dollar with a little number/mask play.

The Jackson jersey is rare and a great jersey, not disrespecting the others at all. It may have the most repairs I have ever seen. I like to see how the repairs are made from the back, thanks. Does it have a tag on it you could show? What is the exact year? You have them displayed very nice too. What about the helmets? Real game used?

This is a great thread showcasing some tremendous items. I hope we can keep it up. I'll try to add a few for Packers fans. Here's a 1972 Sand-Knit worn by center Ken Bowman. The neck size tag and washing instructions tag are missing. Tons of repairs, plus a customized hole to allow a chain to connect from his arm to the shoulder pads. This was to prevent lifting the arm too high to prevent aggravating a constant separated shoulder. The nameplate has not been restored yet, but I believe it is the original one. I've included photos of Bowman wearing this jersey, plus one from 1971 illustrating the chain hole customization.

Those are some of my favorite NFL game used jerseys I've seen in your collection. Doesn't Eric have some great Charger Powder Blues, even some lineman? Those are always cool to see. I hope we see some of the throwbacks from this season hit the market. Like the Eagles, Steelers and Redskins 75th Ann. throwbacks. Also the Jets Titans. Seems so far this year I've only seen a few 2007 gamers on NFL.com. Mainly just the Broncos (Jake51 has the awesome Bailey and Cutler captain patched ones) they also listed another Cutler, DJ Williams, did someone one this board win the Lynch captians patched? The Bills sold a handful of guys and the Dolphins a couple.

One of my favorite jerseys.... New Orleans Saints home jersey used in 1980 by Henry Childs and in 1981 by rookie Hoby Brenner. Childs was a tight end who like his sleeves customized to be skin-tight, and when Brenner was given the jersey in 1981, spandex was added to widen the sleeves back out. The thread from the original "Childs" nameplate is still found on the jersey.

I enjoy owning this piece, which was worn by both tight ends on the All-Time Saints team!

Roger,

Thanks. I have to give credit where credit is due, the Tombstone was orginally Patrick's and I picked it up in some of the 'horse trading' that he and I do.

The repairs are pretty amazing on it, the thought is that it was a gamer in 1967 & 1968 and then was recycled by the Broncos as a practice jersey for sometime thereafter - they didn't have much $ so they made do - which undoubtedly added a few repairs. Rich Jackson commented that it was indeed his and he has the nameplate for it in his trophy case. One thing the pictures could not convey is the feel of that backing material they used, it is almost like cloth dipped in varnish to make it hard. Very odd.

To the helmets, yep, all gamers with the exception of the old-school orange one. That was, by all I can uncover, a helmet given to Goose Gonsoulin in 1963 for making the All-AFL team. It has sweat stains inside but wasn't drilled for a mask so I am making an assumption it was used in practice only. The decals are all original as well as the paint on the shell - it has a very faint stenciled 'GOOSE' on the back and the history of it, as I was told by the person who picked it up from Goose, is that Goose had it with him at a post-season party in 1963 and it was there that Goose gave it to him.

The other Broncos helmets are [L to R] Jerry Inman gamer, The Goose, Elway gamer, Rulon Jones gamer. I'll post close up pics of the Inman later tonight - has some odd rust spots on it as well as the old dunguard mask which I think are pretty cool.

By the way, your NFL collection is amazing! Love to see more pics of what you have!

GWH11 - Love that old center jersey!! Linemen jerseys are my favorites!

Jake51,

The orange crush jerseys are great. The first game used piece I bought was a '93 Robert Delpino (#39) home Bronco jersey. It was well used, the tail had been shortened, sleeve had been shortened and elastic sewn in, no tags either. I got it from Murf Denny at a Tri-Star show in St. Louis. I had a nice Simon Fletcher away also. Both sold during a divorce along with about 100 other jerseys. That depresses me to talk about. I have a 96 Romo that is the most modified jersey I have.

Patrick has nice Bronco stuff also. I wish I would have bought the Morton when they were available a few years ago. I would like to have a Terrell Davis too.

I have got into trying to duplicate the players equipment, pads, neck rolls, collars, rib protectors, etc. in my display. It is a little expensive but I think it adds a lot and is worth it. It keeps me occupied which is what a hobby is suppose to do.

Rose14,
I picked up the metal stand at a antique mall. I was surprised how well they work on the smaller jerseys. I don't really like the way the real big jerseys hang. Picture attached.

Great Packer jersey. Nice photo match.

The 96 Romo has tucks taken on the shoulders and front and back of each sleeve. The back mesh is cut up into the dazzle cloth shoulders. It has eyelets under each arm. A crouch piece is added. This jersey was made so you could not grab hold of it. Plus is has numerous repairs and sewn in repair pieces.

If you're wondering why in the world I would have a Willie Clark jersey (or even who the heck Willie Clark was), the answer lies in what he and Bobby Taylor have in common (besides the obvious fact that they both played for the Eagles).

Roger

Roger:

For enough $$ all are available... The only caveat being that, due to gentleman's agreement, Tom (Jake51) has the right of first refusal and since his pockets are pretty deep, bid big or stay home. :D Now, all kidding aside...

If you're after a Morton jersey, I advise that caution be exercised should one become available. I've seen a few that have been pretty questionable. One in particular offered at auction a few years ago came with Craig's letter stating that it was game worn in SB XII (played Jan 1978), the only problem is that the Russell tagging on this jersey dated post-1983, a year (or more) after Morton's '82 retirement. In a twist of just irony, the winning bidder (who paid way too much IMO @ > $2K), turned out to be Donruss/Playoff who cut this up into 3/4" squares for application to "game-worn" insert cards. In another instance, the same auction house offered what was advertised as Craig's final game-worn jersey from 1982--also accompanied by a letter from Craig--however, again the Russell tagging was from '83 or after, and the jersey's style was not one was in place until circa 1986-'88 period. Caveat emptor!

Regards,

genius

Awesome stuff, guys. Roger, that Romo is amazing. Have you found game photos of it yet? Talk about an easy jersey to match!
This is my favorite thread on this forum, hands down. They should make it a "sticky".

Here's the 2000 home Warrick Dunn that I just got from AMI. It's dirty with some minor hits and some big rubs on the side panels.

You guys have some terrific items. Just got this guy. It is heavy wool and the Jets logo is sewn onto the back. No tags remain except a small size tag in the collar. The pockets are trimmed in leather and there isn't too much wear to the sleeve ends.

Here's an idea - We should all throw five bucks into a pot and then vote for the best item in this thread. The winner gets all of the money.

I think one thing has been proven here, jerseys that are really worn on the field of play have significant wear. Most players do not change jerseys every game. My quarterback jerseys have the least amount of wear, which is understandable. I really like to see the old jerseys.

34swtns,
Dunn was my sons favorite player, and one of mine also. I have one of his 2000 jerseys also. A local guy was a assistant to the equipment manager at Florida State. He has Dunn's helmet he wore his last year. I have been trying to get it for a while, its a piece I really want.

Beavis,
I have several jerseys that people wonder why I want them. A 2005 Willie Ponder, Giant jersey. He went to SEMO ( Southeast Missouri Sate University) which is in the town where I live. I bought it from the Giants, it has nice multiple game wear and was easy to photo match. Having players that you like is all that counts.

Here are a couple of jerseys I really like in my collection. I got them both from the Selcer family. Dick Selcer was the linebacker coach at the Bengals from '84 to '92 and with the Rams from '93 till '95. The Munoz is well worn. It has the crotch piece lengthened, not sure what that means. The Bettis is from his rookie year, 1993, and unrepaired.

I like this thread also, but it seems my NFL collection has been sold. This is a early 80s Nolan Cromwell. It has some great repair marks , but I don't have close ups. Some on the repairs are in white thread, and colored with blue marker. From the style of these repair marks (circular fashion), I pinpointed the work to a longtime LA Rams eguipment guy (I forget his name). There is a lot of info on this guy on one of those NFL FILMS productions. Some repair marks are hard to fake, simply, because they're done by professionals! I hope these equipment managers don't go bad one day, and start "authenticating" for some auction house.

This is probably one of the best threads on the forum. All of the items that have been shown by the members are awesome but the vintage items are far and away the best.

I have attached some scans of my Steve Smith Eagles jersey. He played for the Eagles from 1971-74. This IS my favorite jersey and to the best of my knowledge, the only original Eagles jersey in the hobby from this era. The jersey has at least 25 team repairs along with either dried glue or stickum on the numbers.

I just got a great jersey in today. 1994 Barry Sanders, road, with team paperwork and video match. It came directly from the man that originally bought it from the Lions and I have proof of that. I was used for sure in 2 games, 9/11/94 vs Vikings & 10/30/94 vs the Giants. It has repairs to both shoulders, sleeves, & chest. It has several odd modifications. The Wilson date is DY, 91/November.

The focus of my collection is Heisman winners and HOF players, current and speculating on the future. This jersey is the best of both worlds.

I have several '95 cards that you can tell this is the jersey. One is the Topps 1000 Yd Club, you can see the two white spots on the back numbers.

I also got a 97 Ty Detmer in today, Heisman winner, just not as exciting as the Sanders.

Those are some AWESOME jerseys!!! I love the Walter Jones Seahawks, especially. Linemen are really under-rated and have the best wear/alterations, in my opinion.

I would post individual pics, but my collection is on webshots and they don't allow me to use pics I post through them. I have a few NFL jerseys. Among them are 2006 Lance Briggs, Muhsin Muhammad and Willis McGahee jerseys. Those came from game exclusives and are unwahed and show nice wear, particularly the McGahee. I also have 1998 Jake Plummer and Andre Wadsworth Cardinals jerseys, which were purchased from Jim Yackel. The Wadsworth is killed with repairs and has the crotch piece intact. It's not nearly as interesting as the Walter Jones that was posted, but it's still pretty nice. Feel free to check them out through this link...

Here's another Packers jersey for those interested--Antonio Freeman's 1995 rookie jersey. Freeman wasn't the fastest receiver, but he was shifty, tough, and made some memorable catches, including that amazing bobbling one against the Vikings in that 2000 MNF game. Very nice wear on this one, and I've attached a few pictures of him wearing this exact jersey.

The Smith Eagle jersey is really good also.

GWH11- Great jersey with a dead nuts photo match.
LUND- I would really like to see your jerseys better. Call me for some low light photo tips. Seriously, reshot them outside and repost please.

I have seen length added before but the Jones is unbelievable.

I wish every one would take a few minutes and post all these in the data base. This brings up the question of how much info is too much to post or show. Will it be used in a negative manner by those manufacturing jerseys? My thoughts are, it is one thing to know the info and it is another to be able to duplicate it. A history cannot be manufactured, neither can exact photo matches. The more educated we as collectors are the less we can be deceived.

Gridman, are you kidding me? Wow - what a collection.

Here is a mid-50's Eagles durene jersey. MEARS estimates the jersey is from 1955 or there about. A hammered durene jersey with team repairs and glue on the numbers. No tags remain because the jersey is cut with just the few buttoms remain from where the crotch-piece used to be.

An interesting aspect of this jersey is, if you look closely at the photo of Bednarick knocking out Gifford, there is a number 73 jersey also shown in the same photo. The Eagles re-cycled their jersey but I think the odds that my jersey is the same jersey in the photo are slim to none but all the same, it is a awesome jersey.

Gridman - Wow.

Great work everyone, let's keep it going. Interesting stuff from everybody. It's nice to see these pieces that are locked up in collections, as compared to so many questionable jerseys we see sold over and over.

Here's a 1996 Edgar Bennett Packers jersey. Bennett was a dependable running back for the Pack in the mid-'90s; a great blocker and receiver. Not super-speedy, but a solid runner (1,000 rusher in '95) who excelled in bad weather. This jersey is hammered, with well over a dozen repairs and with Honolulu blue impact marks from the last game it was worn, at the Lions.

I have 2 jersey you might like, the 1997 George and a 2000 Kearse. The George I have photo matched to the Cowboys game 11/27/97. It alo appears the he wore it on 9/7/97 vs the Dolphins. The Wilson "W" is different but you can actually where it was removed. It has a lot of use & repairs mostly on the sleeves & shoulders. The jeresy is tagged 96 and is a size 42.

The Kearse was worn vs the Bengals 12/10/00, vs the Cowboys 12/25/00 and in the NFC championship game vs the Ravens 1/7/01. It came from the NFL and the papersork says worn vs the Ravens. I have photo matches to the other games. It is a size 44.

If you want pictures of anything else on these jerseys

incredible items to say the least...

barry-debi, as a collector of vintage helmets i'm particularly interested and impressed with your rare, vintage helmet collection. as a matter of fact, your collection actually represents one of the main reasons why i find vintage helmets so interesting given that it's an excellent example of how certain teams opted for particular makes of helmets. the niners, as your collection shows, were among a handful of teams that sported wilson helmets during that era; the bears were also famous for wearing wilson's as well. then you have the st. louis cardinals that favored rawlings, as did the baltimore colts.

i know that the bears and cards opted for wilson and rawlings helmets because they were manufactured in their area. however, i'm not quite sure why the niners chose wilson as well given their geographical location - i'll have to look into that.

anyway, those are some beautiful helmets that you have. if you ever get a free moment, do you think you could post several more pics of each helmet showing the sides, back and interior? it would be greatly appreciated!

Roger, that's a great Rozier Falcons jersey. Since you collect Heisman winners, this one's for you: Desmond Howard's white Packers jersey, worn in every away game (the ones they wore white in, anyway) in 1996. Some blue impact marks are evident, from the last away game at Detroit. Howard broke the NFL record for punt return yards in a season wearing this jersey.

OK so I am incredibly biased but give me Mo over Ray any day! Mo is the greatest LB in Jets history - could rush the passer, cover, stuff the run, anything you needed a LB to do. Unfortunately he played on some pretty bad Jets teams and will never get the recognition he deserves outside of the Jets circle. And let us not forget...without Mo Lewis there would be no Tom Brady. I was at that game when Mo knocked Bledsoe's lung loose the first game after 9/11 and the rest is history.

From Wikipedia: Lewis retired after the 2003 season with 1231 tackles(883 solo), 52.5 sacks, 14 interceptions for 241 yards, 79 pass deflections, 29 forced fumbles, 13 fumble recoveries for 74 yards, and 5 defensive touchdowns in 200 career games. He made the Pro Bowl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro_Bowl) three time during his career, in 1998,1999 and 2000.

Not a shabby resume. Here is his rookie jersey hammered with wear and tons of repairs, one of my fav pieces. GO JETS!

What great helmets!

The Al Toon and Mo Lewis jerseys are exceptional also.

About a years ago AMI auctioned off a James Wilder Buccaneer helmet. Does anyone know who has that?

Last summer had the whole gang, mom, pops, nieces, nephews, wife, sister in-law, brother etc. all get pics sporting the 1957-58 Wilson F2000 RP. Made for some good laughs.

Safety45,
I like the Brigg's. You do not have a Dan Peiffer, #53. He played for the Bears 75-77 at the center position. I would like to have one. Show some of your favorite older jerseys.

Indyred, 2006 Tomlinson attached. The peice of yellow tag appears to be a warning label off the shoulder pad. It was there when I got it.

Forum members are holding a lot of great football jerseys and helmets. I am glad I am getting to see them. They bring back memories of players, and times, that I have forgotten. Personally, I like to show mine to others that appreciate them. I watched the Heisman presentation last night. They showed John David Crow. He was my first favorite player, when I was a kid. Yes, I'm 55. I have been looking for one of his jerseys forever. HELP ME FIND ONE, if it exist.

Attached are pictures of my 2003 Faulk & Bruce Ram jerseys.

The Faulk was worn for game 12 vs the Viking,11/30/03. In this game Faulk scored 3 TD's, his 125,126 & 127. He tied and passed Walter Peyton and passed Jim Brown for 5th place on the all time TD record list. I bought it directly from NFL auctions. It is registered to me at We Trac, #WT2685154057, and have it photo matched. In my mind his is a significate jersey in my collection.

The Bruce was worn was worn in the same game as the Faulk as well as 3 others. Game 5 vs Falcons 10/13/03, game 6 vs Packers 10/19/03, game 9 vs Ravens 11/9/03 and the Viking game 11/30/03. He scored 1 TD in the Viking game. It is registered to me at We Trac, #WT2710070606. Notice how the tail is taped. This can be seen in many pictures of Bruce.

I think both these guys are future HOF.

I also have Bulgers jersey from the Viking game.

Aeneas,
Could you post pictures of your favorite helmet(s) in your collection. I learn something with almost every post you do.

The following is my 2005 Fred Taylor jersey. It was used vs the Jets 9/25/05. I have photo matched it. The Jag jerseys of this era do not have collar tags. The name plate is made from diagonal mesh like the lower jersey with a layer of shoulder spandex below. It is autographed on the back.
This jersey was a gift to me from Skip Richardson who is the Director of Football Operations at Jacksonville. Fred is my favorite running back in the NFL today.

Here is my Rawlings HND-9 Tony Dorsett Helmet from c.1979-1980....I picked this up in the Spring of 2006 on Ebay...the seller had it for over 25 years and received it from a Rawlings representative when this individual did some work on his home. The Rawlings representative told the seller that this helmet was worn by Dorsett in the 1970's and that when the origianl facemask bent, the equipment manager replaced it with a white one (when I purchased this off Ebay, it came with a white RB facemask w/ white clips which I have kept). I have since replaced with correct gray facemask, clips and even added the DORSETT dymo tape!! I am a Patriots and Steelers fan, but I am partial to Rawlings helmets and couldn't pass this up from a Heisman Trophy Winner, Super Bowl Champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer.....

Meggett was my favorite football player growing up. Jersey has two team repairs on the back and comes with a PSA/DNA authentication sticker, as well as team stamp on inside (all not included in GFA item description).

aeneas01
12-14-2007, 07:06 AM
roger, imo your campbell helmet epitomizes the type of thing that makes lid collecting so interesting given that it's not just a lid that once belonged to one of the best ever, but it's also a lid that tells an interesting story.

like many players from his era, campbell wore a clearshell helmet (a macgregor in his case) during his college playing days, but because most pro teams didn't use clearshell lids he switched to a riddell when he joined the oilers. dan marino, tony dorsett and hugh green were other stars that wore clearshells throughout their college days but who also switched to non-clearshell lids when they hit the pros. only a handful of players, such as billy simms, continued to sport a clearshell when they joined the pros.

but back to campbell - after wearing a riddell during his first year with the oilers, rawlings offered him a contract to wear one of their models; from the photos available it appears that he exclusively wore a rawlings rts "surgical tube" model even though the rawlings hnd9 model was by far the most popular rawlings helmet worn by the pros at the time. but, for whatever reason, campbell switched back to a riddell after 4 years of wearing a rawlings - perhaps he just favored the fit of riddell's new af2.

but what makes this switch in helmet models so interesting is that apparently campbell's deal with rawlings had not expired. as such, campbell had a famous rawlings "r" (which easily identified rawlings helmets) taped to his riddell helmet and also had the "riddell" forehead pad logo appearing above the facemask replaced with the "rawlings" forehead pad logo. classic!

i've only seen this sort of thing a couple of times before - for a while jack lambert used a riddell "wildcat" forehead pad on his rawlings suspnsion helmet but used white tape to cover the "riddell" logo and tony dorsett used a "wilson" forehead logo on his clearshell macgregor for a time when at pitt (did wilson float tony some cash for this?).

as far as your helmet is concerned roger, i've seen a boatload of authentic game used oilers af2 helmets sold at auction through the years including two "earl campbell"s that i doubted immediately, but imo yours looks great. below are some photos of the 1983 pro bowl in which you can clearly see campbell wearing a riddell with rawlings logos...

Aeneas,

This helmet has a letter from the Oiler Equipment manager at the time, Red Batty. I tried to do my homework, with my limited knowledge of helmets. The collector that owned it had already photo matched it, I just validated what he had done.

Thanks for the work that you did further validating it, I had not seen the Pro bowl picture. If there is anything else on it that is important let me know and I will photo it. When it come to helmets, you are the man in my opinion.

Nice Campbell, Roger!

Those spandex inserts remind me of my 1987 Shaun Gayle. Only a couple of the Bears were having spandex added to their jerseys, even as late as 1990. This is one of the first. It's still got the remnant of a makeshift crotchpiece that was evidently cut off. I'd like to photo match it but good clear shots of Shaun from this period are tough to come by. I've still got some game footage to go through so hopefully I'll spot it somewhere.

Commando,
The Groth helmet is a nice piece.
Being from Missouri, I was always a Cardinal fan, I know your feeling sorry for me now. Anyway, according to Media guides and game programs, In '87 there was no #34. I do not have the '86. In '84 & '85 they list John Walker, runningback out of Texas. He was drafted in '84 in the 9th round. The ESPN Football Encyclopedia, or Total Football, does not list him so he must have been on the practice squad. I have no book for '83. The '82 media guide list Walter Poole, runningback, rookie from SIU. The '81 media guide list Ben McCall, runningback, rookie from Purdue. Those guys are not listed as players either in the Encyclopedia. Hope this helps.

There has not been a fishnet jersey shown here yet. This is a Robert Brazile from the '82 or '83, I believe. I have not been able to match it yet.
It is a Sand-Knit size 50, tags in the collar, with sewn numbers and a screened on name. The diameter of the fishnet is surprising.

Nice to see those old Bears jerseys.

For my money, Earl Campbell should still be considered one of the greatest running backs ever, maybe just below Brown, Payton, Sanders, Sayers and Motley.

Anyway, another Packers jersey--1980 Lynn Dickey. This one has the NOB removed, but shows a few nice hit marks, one repair on the back, and appropriate interior pilling. The markered number "8" on the tail tagging refers not to 1978, but rather a size 48, as opposed to the size 46 indicated on the tag. Dickey suffered through some nasty injuries through much of his career (including a leg broken in two places), but eventually blossomed as one of the best quarterbacks by the early eighties. The right sleeve has been cut open and customized, a few years before another largely immobile but deadly accurate deep pocket passer would do the same: Dan Marino.

There are really a lot of good Bear jerseys in members hands.

Not to slight anyone, I have learned something from every jersey or helmet that has been posted here. The only thing that could have been better is Lund's photography:) .

I want to show Greg Lloyd's 1998 Panther jersey. I have photo matched this jersey to the following games: Vikings 8/22/98, Saints 9/13/98 and Packers 9/27/98
In my opinion Greg is one of the best linebackers to ever play the game. This jersey came from the Panthers and has a team letter.

There is some magic marker writing inside that has been painted over, and is hard to read, that appears to be a date/ size, H-10-9 7 1/2. It has a L cast into the shell as well as a, 7 1/8, 7 1/4 on the back. My guess is the padding inside was changed to resize it.

DrJ,

Do you know if the game worn throwback jerseys will be offered for sale?

Aloving77,

Show us the George jersey. Do you know when it was used?

Just for the record I think the '71 Jurgensen is the jersey shown that I would want to own the most of all that have been shown, and there are many great pieces.

In the spirit of the Giants being in the Super Bowl for the 4th time, I thought I would post pictures of my favorite football jersey. It is a 2000 Strahan that shows great use with about 6 team repairs, one sweet one that extends to the number. I also had Stahan autograph the jersey at a Steiner signing. He is a great guy and was willing to get up and take pictures with me and my wife.

Now I understand why you got defensive in my thread about NFL Auctions pricing getting far beyond true market value. This was one of the specific Chargers pieces I listed as an example, and obviously you're one of the bidders pushing the envelope over there Rog.

To your credit, when you're dead and gone and your heirs want to liquidate for the cash, that piece has far better chance of returning the investment than say a $5,500 Rivers jersey (unless he goes off and has a HOF career).

I think the helmet went off for what $13-16,000? You'd think the greedy NFL coulda thrown in the chinstrap and at least OFFERED to have LT sign it.

DrJ

mvander,
The helmet cost me $6756.00. Personally, for me to add that to my collection at that price, I am very happy. Beside your picture of LT on all you post, would you consider putting, "Roger's Stuff" since I own the jersey and helmet?

Todd,
The Jackson is a good piece too. I believe at $1035.00 it was one of the best buys in the NFL Auction. It has one game wear with some paint transfers on the back. Abrasions on the shoulders and that kind of stuff. I'll get pictures soon and post them. The Rebok tag says 04. It has the WeTrak and Prova tags in the collar. I tried to look the history up and could not do it last night. I called today and they are going to get the info and email it to me. I looked at photos and have it narrowed down to a couple of games, we'll see what they say.

It's also good to see that these items have been purchased by someone who appreciates them and is also willing to display photos of them for the rest of us to enjoy. Thanks!!

reed1216,

Here are a couple of pictures of the home Jackson from the NFL and also my other away. The Away was used verse the Colts in 05. According to Prova it was used vs the Colts and Giants. It photo matches to the Colts but definately was not used vs the Giants. I'll post the findings on the blue when I know. Nameplate and elastic in the tail is the biggest difference.

It looks as if Steven Jackson wore "S JACKSON" and "JACKSON" nameplates both in 2006. Anyone got any thoughts on that?

One of the best deals I have got in a while was the '03 Faulk, used vs the Browns, from AMI for $1400.00. I'll take all the HOF players I can get for that.

Roger,
I was going for the away Jackson and also looking at the Jackson on the NFL auction. You beat me to the punch on the away. I was also debating the Faulk in the AM auction as well. I think the same way as you, Hall of Famers at those prices are a GREAT deal. I passed on the Faulk as I have one already. I was depressed on the Jackson so I ended up with the Curtis Martin from AM which I think I did well on. So congrats Roger on two great purchases. And I got Martin which was on my 3 or 4 player wish list. So it worked out all the way around.

Scott,

I looked at the Martin, it is a fine jersey and very difficult to find. I like it better than a Jets.

I have a home '03 Faulk, used vs the Vikings, also. It is one of my best jerseys as he wore it when he score 3 TD's to passed Jim Brown and Payton. I just thought the price was so good I could not pass. I would have liked to have bought the Warner, Bruce and Holt Ram jerseys also. All had paperwork and all were pretty good prices.

Roger,
Thanks! Much appreciated. I agree on the Rams jerseys. The overall prices were pretty high on some of the jerseys. I think the market is starting to justify the rareness of NFL gamers. Believe me, I look daily for them and they are very hard to come by. Especially the better documented and quality ones. For me the hunt is the fun of it. When I do get to purchase something it only gets better.

That certainly is a SWEET road Jackson you got there! Great wear too! I'm glad we could work out a deal for it. Roger is a standup individual to deal with by the way for those who are not aware of that. I must not have been paying too close attention to the home Jackson because I think you got a great deal on that one. I would like to add a home Jackson to my rookie road Jackson with the 10th Anniversary patch at some point. As far as your question regarding his use of S. Jackson and just Jackson nameplates in the same season, I have seen pics. of both so I'm pretty sure he did but I think it may have been in 05 too. John.

jay1234- Thanks for the kind words. I purchased the Muhammad jersey from Game Exclusives directly. I totally agree with your opinion of Joe. He was very prompt in answering my questions and was easy to negotiate with. It was used against the Cardinals, in the October 16th game on Monday Night Football. It also has the pants he wore that game and they, as well as the jersey, aren't washed.

The Briggs was purchased from AMI. It also has the pants (worn against the Giants on November 12th). I imagine Game Exclusives consigned it to AMI, as it has their COAs, which are very similar to the ones that came with the Muhammad set. The Briggs is photomatched to a nice Getty image of him tackling Tiki Barber and has pretty strong body odor. Fortunately, I have it in a jersey cabinet that prevents the smell from getting out.

I would check AMIs auctions to see if they offer any more Bears jerseys. I was really disappointed when G.E. stopped offering jerseys, but AMI seems to get a lot of their stuff. I remember they had an alternate Berrian that I hoped to eventually get. Unfortunately, it sold and since then, they haven't gotten anything else in.

If you have deeper pockets than mine, MEARS has a really nice blue Urlacher. It's a great shirt that's signed and inscribed with game worn notations and I also think he noted what game(s) it was worn in. I ended up settling for the Briggs because I couldn't bring myself to raise the cash I'd need to get the Urlacher. With all the items MEARS has consigned to Robert Edwards Auction in April, it might just end up there. Good luck!!!

Of the NFL shirts I own, this own displays the most wear, by far. There are numerous team repairs and significant sun fading on the sleeve logos. The team used red stitching to make a repair on one of the shoulders, where the pressed on Arizona logo, which shows nicely against the faded red logo color. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he wore this one all year.

rkgibson -

some info on your great looking tomlinson helmet based on the photo of the date code you included in your post....

manufacturing (molding) info (as opposed to assembly info):

1. shell material - polycarbonate (adult shell)
2. shift - first (out of 3)
3. date molded - march 21, 2006
4. manufacturing location - in house
5. size - large

note: once the shell is molded it can take up to 6 months for it to be assembled (holes drilled, snaps added, padding added, etc.) - assembly date can be found on a decal inside of the helmet, usually in the crown area. this date is coded in small letters found beneath the serial number on the decal.

drj:

great chillar helmet! as i've mentioned before i'm not very interested in modern helmets but i do make an exception when it comes to rams' helmets (i'm a lifelong rams fan). what i really like about modern rams helmets (gold horns) is that unlike many other modern helmets, they are virtually impossible to fake. the horn decals are not available anywhere but at rams' park and from the rams' decal maker - you can find some knockoffs on ebay but they really aren't even close. also, todd hewitt (rams' longtime equipment manager) does some unique things with these helmets are are very tough to duplicate. his attention to detail is amazing - for example, he uses two different warning decals; one for schutt helmets and one for riddell helmets. the warning decals for riddell helmets are narrow and tall so they fit the width of the center ridge of the riddell helmet (non-revolutions) whereas the warning decals for the schutt helmets are wider.

DrJ

Thank you aeneas. I got the Chillar from Jim Yackel, he received quite a few Rams helmets not long ago. I like the idea of the Rams helmets being so hard to duplicate - too bad that isn't the case for all teams. Take care.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO WORE THE FOLLOWING HELMETS? Thanks for any help you can give...

Cardinals circa 1987 # 34
Saints circa 1994 #67
Broncos circa 1987 #51

DrJ:

#51 was worn by Denver Broncos linebacker Marc Munford from 1987 through 1990.

Best regards,

03-01-2008, 03:53 PM
Dr. J,

Andy McCollum, the long-time starting center for the Rams from the University of Toledo, wore #67 for the New Orleans Saints from 1994 through 1998. Note that he was active for only one regular-season game for the Saints in 1994, but did not participate in that game.

Regarding the Cardinals, I could not make a positive ID for the 1987 season. Keep in mind that three games were played with strike replacement players that year. Tony Mumford (Penn State) is listed as #34 on the 1986 preseason roster. He played two games in 1985 for St. Louis, but did not make the team in 1986. Jessie Clark (Arkansas & Louisiana Tech) appears to have worn #34 in 1988 and 1989 for the Cardinals.

Hope this information is useful.

Thanks, Patrick! I was pretty excited to see that jersey offered for such a relatively low price. I've also heard that Broncos jerseys aren't too easy to find and I've been a fan of DJ Williams, since his days with Miami and decided to go for it.

In looking at the jersey, there are several pretty big repairs to the shoulder areas. Although the NFL lists it as having been worn during the Chargers game, is it feesible that it was worn in others? I can't imagine the team repairing the shirt if it was just going to be donated to the NFL for sale in their auctions. Thanks again!!

Mark and Patrick -

Thank you both for helping me identify those helmets.

What you say about the Cardinals helmet makes a lot of sense - I wasn't even thinking about 1987 having replacement players.

Even though McCollum didn't play much for the Saints, I particularly like the helmet because it has the Jim Finks memorial decal on back. Memorial decals on authentic game-used helmets have always been hard to find from my experience.

Thanks again.

I'm going to throw a few QB jerseys on. If anyone wants more info or pictures on any of them let me know.
Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Dan Marino, Warren Moon, Mark Brunell, Drew Bledsoe, Mark Bulger, Kerry Collins, Damien Craig. All are documented.

Roger- Thanks for the kind words. I must say that your home must be a museum!! I don't think I could ever imagine seeing so many great NFL items under one roof- outside of Canton. Thanks for sharing!!!!

Roger,

Nice Brunell jersey. What year is it from?

Jags Fan Dan,

The Brunell is from the 02 season. It was used vs the Cowboys on 11/24/02 and the Titans 12/22/02. It came directly from the team to me. The Jaguar jerseys are some of the best to look at. Attached are more photos.

Reed1216
Thanks, I do enjoy the jerseys, as I'm sure you do too from looking at your stuff. A couple of photos of my home office are attached.

I really have too many right now. I just committed about 40 to an auction, several which are in this thread. The Romo went to a new home, a forum member. That was a hard one to sell. At this point I like all that I own. It is hard to sell any of them.

Roger -

I promise Romo is in a good home, surrounded by other Broncos gamers! I will say it is the single most modified jersey I have ever seen - thanks again for letting me have a crack at it.

For those of you that might take a shot at some of Roger's jerseys that go up for auction, all I can say is that they are even more amazing in person!

That Moon jersey is amazing Roger! Along with the others you have posted next to it. Great jersey.

I concur 1,000% on Roger's collection. I've had the great opportunity to buy a few from him lately and to me they're priceless. Hopefully I can get some pics up soon.

I definitely look forward to putting that Titans jersey that you gave to Grey Flannel in my collection Roger. ;)

Hey Oil Can Dan,

Its from the 99 season Puma Jersey. The jersey is real clean and probably an un-used team issued. I can't find any hit marks on it. I picked it up back in November and couldn't pass it up. Dawkins jerseys are hard to come by without paying a fortune for. He's probably one of Clemson's bests...that's what I collect.

I wanted to throw a few photo's of my '04 Jr Seau on here, which I do not think I have ever showed. It came from NFL auctions and was used vs Jets 10/3/04.

Also, in reviewing '96 Bronco game tapes, I got a good look at Romonowski's jersey that I sold Jake51. The eyelets in the sides were tied with shoe lace's to tighten the jersey more. I put them on my display, have a look. I tried to duplicate it exact. It was easy to see which eyelet holes were use. The front had 3 hole with the center one having no eveidence of ever being use. The others were stretched from being tied.

10/3/04? The Jets played (and beat) SD twice in the 04 season...week 2 (Sep 19) at San Diego which I attended and then the exciting Wild Card game at San Diego in Jan 05. Neither of those games was played on Oct 3 of 2004. Sure you have the right info Roger?

Ever made a stupid post and wished you could immediately take it back??? Well there goes my validity as a Jets fan and GU collector huh? Hey, maybe I can get a job at an auction house? I think next time I should let the pictures load first before running my mouth - man I hate dial-up :D Anyhow, let me take my foot out of my mouth and apologize for my idiocy...sorry Roger and anybody else who wasted time reading that LOL. At least the Jets won the Miami game as well!

No wonder I cannot find a good Charger Seau, Eric has them all. I bet the muddy Seau came from the 9/26/04 game vs the Steelers, I got Zac Thomas jersey from that game, it was a mess too. The helmet is killer also. I remember in '94 when the Chargers beat the Steelers in the AFC championship game, and Seau stomped on the terrible towel, I hated that guy!

drj - i noticed that you listed your lid on ebay; looks like it's going to fetch a solid amount. clearshells are among my favorite vintage lids - macgregor, kelley, max pro, marietta, even rawlings and wilson. and, of course, riddell rt lids. beauties, all of them.

it seems that this forum attracts and caters to collectors interested in gu equipment that can be attributed to specific players, which is great - but imho a tremendous amount of satisfaction can also be had when it comes to collecting/owning rare, game used equipment that isn't player specific. as a matter of fact, i think this area of game used equipment would be a great opportunity for the guu auction...

rkgibson (roger) - i haven't forgotten you my friend!

aeneas - It's a nice helmet, I just need to cut back a bit. Hope you noticed my full-disclosure about the mask and clips. :)

I would have offered it here, but I've probably contacted a half-dozen people on this forum when they advertised as being interested in helmets and only 1 even took the time to respond back if I remember correctly.....very disappointing.
