I picked up a 1980 Indians Jersey that has some patches on the sleeve that read "Press Star" under the Chief Wahoo logo. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what these patches represented (ie, player of the week or something) and how many years the Indians did this.

Thanks much for any help

Anyone know what the patch on Jorge Orta's right sleeve in this photo represents or how long the Indians used them?

In case anyone was wondering what these patches were for I found out recently from the Cleveland State University library:

I checked our clippings files and found to my surprise that the Press did give out weekly awards to PRO athletes in 1980, based upon voting by Press readers in weekly polls.

Charboneau won the award five times in 1980 and was the Press Star of the Year for baseball, with 27 1/2 points to Miguel Dilone's 14 1/2.

A Press story from October 9, 1980, quotes Super Joe as saying, upon learning that he was Star of the Year, "I made it? That's nice. That is really nice. The fans have been great to me."

Since I received the Press articles from 1980 regarding the patches in the mail today I thought I'd post a finale to my own question.

10/9/1980:

"Joe Charboneau was named Indians Press Star of the year today. A complete tabulation of voting by Tribe fans in weekly polls conducted by the Press gives outfielder Joe Charboneau a sweeping victory in the balloting, with Indians suprise centerfield package Miguel Dilone taking second place with hsi .341 batting average.

Third was 1st baseman Mike Hargrove. Indian Press Star voting was conducted throughout the baseball season on a weekly basis. The Press Star of the Week honor went to Charboneau 5 times. Dilone won it 4 times and Hargrove three.

For the Press Star of the Year honor, points were awarded on a three-two-one basis for the players finishing in the money each week.

Final Standings: 1st place votes in ():

1. Joe Charboneau (5) : 27.5
2. Miguel Dilone (4) : 14.5
3. Mike Hargrove (3): 14
4. Ron Hassey (1) : 12
5. Alan Bannister (2) : 10

Charboneau's Day: Press Star of the Year

It was Joe Charboneau day as he accepted the American League Rookie of the Year award today. He also accepted a second honor - his choice by Cleveland fans as Press Star of the Year.

Charboneau was the aggregate winner in the Press poll of weekly Press Stars. He was first five times in votes telephoned to the Press by fans.
