What are the thoughts on this helmet. I am not in any way questioning the validity as I have not contacted the seller, nor do I have any interest to buy. Just curious.

It photo matches very nicely with 2001 pics on Getty. Only discrepancy noted was that rear stickers appear higher on this helmet than in the Getty pics, but that could be a visual anamoly caused by the rear bumper being mangled and hanging out of position.

Aeneas will tell you to ask for the date stamp above the left earhole (hopefully I'm catching on) to see if the date of the shell jives, and will likely caution you how easy it is to replicate a Favre. Of course the Lampson LOA is a huge turnoff.

I am 99 percent sure that this was the one I owned a few years ago... I ended up returning it to the seller because I couldn't photomatch those rear decals. I had photos from every game and they simply didnt match up...

I was pretty upset when I couldnt match the decals too...

I know Red Batty would help anyone who is thinking about buying this.

On a side note, I traded for the helmet... When I didnt think the helmet was good, I emailed the dealer who the kid got it from initially.

The answer he gave me was something like "we stand behind our third party authenticators and there will be no money given back." I still probably have the emails, but it would take a while to find them.

The reason I am so sure that this was the one I traded for is because that back "PACKERS" decal was crushed and it is on the photos as well.

Also, the Lou Lampson cert looks exactly the same as the one I had and the images sheet was kind of damaged and it looks like this one is too.

Like I said, I wasnt sure if it was not real or not, but if the decals are out of place, how could it be legit?

Do they move them if it came from a reconditioning plant or something?

Not sure.

From my limited experience with looking at "game used" helmets, I subscribe to the theory of (to paraphrase the late Johnny Cochrane) "If the photo match does not appear, I will steer clear".

Too much "close but no cigar" stuff out there that is pretty well done, but there always seems to be some minute flaw which queers the deal.

I found a photo match in 2001 for the rear decals, they just appear too high up on the helmet that's for sale. However, alot of these older Riddells, the rear bumper slips down on and out of place, that appears to be the case here.

Did you actually take possession of the helmet? Was the rear bumper distorted and out of place?

Yes, I took possession of it. Had it for about a week and convinced myself that I would be better off sending it back...

I felt bad for the kid who I traded with.

The bumper seemed to have slid down, like you said, but the NFL shied or flag (i dont remember which) simply didnt match up to the photos and those dont ever move or slide down.

Also, I am not sure, but I was a little unsure of the material the shield was made from... I would ask lots of questions before buying this.

Jaw Pads are not original.
Small issue I admit, but they are part of the helmet and these are not right.

only two people in the world could convince me that this lid once belonged to favre - batty or favre. short of one of these endorsements, this is just another helmet imho.

fwiw, the placement of the number 4 decal strikes me as more than a little odd given that the primary reason helmets are tagged with a player's number (inside or out) is to make it quick and easy for players to pick their lids out of a group of helmets that look very much alike - along the sidelines during a game or at practice, for example. these numbers are also helpful to equipment managers and reconditioners as well.

as such, why would the number 4 decal on this helmet be hidden under the forehead padding which has been removed (flipped down) in the photo in order to show it? makes little sense to me. unless, of course, someone wants to try and claim that they "discovered" this decal and realized it was a favre lid...
