View Full Version : Anyone know when Robinson Cano Wore #51 on his uniform?

I know Robinson Cano played for:

2001 Staten Island
2002 Staten Island Yankees
2002 Greensboro Bats
2003 Tampa Yankees
2003 Trenton Thunder
2004 Trenton Thunder
2004 Columbus Clippers

Anyone know when Robinson Cano Wore #51 and with what team?

Also, in this picture, he's in a Yankee uniform (maybe minor league?) and on his glove it has #51.

Can anyone help? I've been on the computer all last night and today and I'm stumped on this one. Usually, I can find what I'm looking for.

Regards, Tony

According to the Baseball Almanac, he has worn 14, 22 and he now wears 24 in honor of Jackie Robinson.

His father wore 52 with the Astros in 1989. Maybe the glove belonged to his father and his father wore 51 at some point in the minors if 52 was not available?

Or....maybe it was a spare glove that Bernie Williams gave to him, although the flag picture on the glove looks more like a D.R. flag than a flag of Puerto Rico.

just a wild guess....

The blue armbands were worn on Father's Day so maybe he did in fact wear one of his dad's old gloves to pay homage to him in that game.

if i were you i'd just try to get the media guides/yearbooks/programs for each of those teams during those specific years. you may even end up with a photomatch.

His father's name was Jose Cano, so I doubt it was his father's glove. On this glove, it has embroidered on it RC #51 (RC - Robinson Cano)

I'm on a mission to figure this out. Any help is appreciated.

My research is for this glove. i found a few different pics of Cano where this style glove (TPX) with it embroidered on the glove RC #51, as well as the Dominican flag. This is the only glove I found with the flag in color.
Glove looks as if it was used an entire season.

I'm on a mission to figure this out, so any help would be much appreciated.

Look in the bottom left hand corner of the photo and there should be a year printed on there. That should be the year that the photo was originally taken....that might help to a lead.

Kyle, the year on the photo is 2005

I assume the #51 would be his uniform number. I just can't find any pictures or information anywhere that shows he wore #51. In the 2005 photo, wearing a Yankee uniform, you can see he still has R.C. #51 on that glove also. I won't give up until I figure this out.

Rudy,

Thanks! However, this confuses me even more. He signs the same card with 51 and 13.

I do know someone who has a Robinson Cano signed Minor League Baseball from 2002, which Cano signed it #51. In 2002, he played for Staten Island Yankees (#17) and Greensboro Bats (not sure what his uni # is).

I have many people helping me on this and I truly appreciate everyones help. Everyone in this forum is a Class Act!

I have never see a glove with this much use. It's beautiful!

The pictures of him wearing the glove show the R.C. 51 in a different part of the glove than the one up for bid. It still looks good to me though. He wore that baby out!!!

Bernie Williams has worn no. 51 from 1990-2006 for the Yankees.

Nice shot of Reyes in no. 15. I never realized he wore no. 15 when he first came up.

I'm have been called stupid at times, but not insane. I'm a big Yankee fan and collector. I've read some positive and negative things about Cano's abilities as a ballplayer, but the killer use on this glove, I just had to have it....especially for the price! It will still look nice displayed.

I figure the glove is from around 2002-04. I'm still searching for a pic of him wearing the glove. With this much use, there has to be a picture somewhere. Hopefully, Cano himself with help. From what I hear, he's very approachable and a decent guy.

I have a two people that will be seeing Cano in the next few weeks and they're going to show him pics of the glove. Hopefully, he'll sign it and make an incription about the glove.

I've seen many game used glove, but not like this.

Anyone know Locker Room Memorabilia's email address? I tried their website, but it only gives you the option to email them by filling out a form. Couldn't find an email address anywhere on their site.

Most likely, Cano used this glove during the 2004 Minor League Season.

Research continues.

I was also told by someone in this forum that they have a Robinson Cano signed minor league ball from 2002, in which Cano signed it #51.

I'm determined to pinpoint when and where this glove was worn. Pictures are difficult to find from the minors, so any help would be appreciated.

I also believe he wore #51 in 2002 with the Greenboro Bats, but I can't find anything to back it up.

I've conducted research on many pieces of game used memorabilia. This has been the toughest to date.

Bernie must have let him borrow it for the picture.....

Most likely he did, as #51 was Bernie's number.

This has been the toughtest and most difficult research I have done.
So far, I have been able to obtain his uniform numbers, but for only some teams. I still haven't heard back from teh Greenboro Bats or the Tampa Yankees:

2001 Staten Island
2002 Staten Island Yankees (#17 & #38)
2002 Greensboro Bats
2003 Tampa Yankees
2003 Trenton Thunder (#51)
2004 Trenton Thunder (#51)
2004 Columbus Clippers

I'll keep pressing.

Thanks for everyones comments and help.

Sometimes people forget stuff when it comes to numbers. Last night, the Nationals showed off one of their new prospects who was called up. He was sitting in the bullpen wearing number 33. Someone later noticed that 33 was Frank Howard's number and that it had been retired and the player was then switched to #29.

Stuff happens!

Almost complete. I only need the Tampa Yankees and Greesboro Bats (now Greensboro Grasshoppers) uniform numbers.

2001 Staten Island
2002 Staten Island Yankees (#17 & #38)
2002 Greensboro Bats
2003 Tampa Yankees
2003 Trenton Thunder (#51)
2004 Trenton Thunder (#51)
2004 Columbus Clippers (#14)
2005Columbus Clippers (#99)

I hope to find that Cano also wore #51 with either Greensboro or Tampa. That would pinpoint he wore #51 between 2002-2004.

I contacted the Greensboro and this was their reply:

Thank you so much for your email!

I have been unsuccessful locating the information you have requested on Robinson Cano in our media archives. Unfortunately, many of are records regarding team information are sporadic until the 2004 season, leaving this type of information out of reach.

I am sorry I couldn’t be of more assistance.

Have a great day,

We're talking only 3 years ago and they can't find anything in their archives on Cano's uniform number.

That's odd.

I found that trying to located minor league pictures to photomatch minor league stuff is very difficult. I've searched the web, contacted teams, minor league photograhers, etc., with negative results.

I have one person, associated with the Yankees, who is going to show Cano pictures of the glove. I only hope Cano is willing to assist. There's no question this is his glove (R.C. #51) as he wore #51 for the Trenton Thunder in 2004 and 2005

Not sure if anyone in this forum also collects cards, but I believe I found a card that shows Cano wearing the glove. I can slightly see where it looks like the color Dominican Republic flag is on the glove.

If anyone has this card and can provide me either a larger scan of the card, or better yet, the glove, I would truly appreciate it.

I have to admit...this has been the most difficult research I have conducted. It's bad enough there aren't enough minor league and/or pictures out there...I can't even get help from the minor league teams.

Still can't find out what uniform numbers Cano wore with the Greensboro Bats and Tampa Yankees. Emailed both organization...Tampa doesn't respond and Greensboro Bats (now Grasshoppers) said they don't have records (I find that odd...we're only taking 2002).

2001 Staten Island
2002 Staten Island Yankees (#17 & #38)
2002 Greensboro Bats
2003 Tampa Yankees
2003 Trenton Thunder (#51)
2004 Trenton Thunder (#51)
2004 Columbus Clippers (#14)
2005Columbus Clippers (#99)

Here's the same card he signed with 51 and 13. Can't figure this one out. Maybe he wore 13?

Any help would be appreciated.

In addition to many others who have helped me in my quest to find all uniform numbers worn by Robinson Cano in the Minor Leagues, I especially want to thanks CARLEVV and INTHEMINORS for their tremendous help in making many good things happen. First, I was able to find their remaining uniform numbers, thanks to INTHEMINORS:

2001 Staten Island (#17) - Played 2 games and 3 playoff games
2002 Staten Island Yankees (#38) - Played 22 games and 4 playoff games
2002 Greensboro Bats (#17) - Played 113 games
2003 Tampa Yankees (#13 & #51) - Played 90 games
2003 Trenton Thunder (#12 & #51) - Played 46 games
2004 Trenton Thunder (#51) - Played 74 games
2004 Columbus Clippers (#13) - Played 61 games
2005 Columbus Clippers (#99) - Played 24 games

Second, I had the opportunity for Robinson Cano to look at the glove and confirm he used it while with the Trenton Thunder (2003-2004), thanks to CARLEVV.

I am sending the glove to Steiner Sports in the next few weeks for Robinson Cano to sign. I also want to thank Steiner Sports for contacting me on their own after reading this thread. I had the opportunity to talk to a few gentlemen at Steiner Sports and they are a class act.

As always, whether I'm making a post, making a reply to share my thoughts and/or opinions, or just reading many threads that others post, I love this forum.

Since finding this forum, I find myself collecting more GU stuff and less sports cards.

Thanks to all and keep up the great work you all do to keep this hobby safe.

As always, Regards, Tony
