49er's - 1981-1983

November 11 2005, 5:01 PM

Marcus,

i don't collect football jerseys, i'm not a 49er's expert, and truth be known, i don't even really understand the rules of football.
that said, i don't see any difference between the 49er's numbers from 1981 to 1983.
do you? the font looks the same, the size, they're all screen-printed.

If a jersey doesn't have sewn on numbers, I'll often hear people simply say they have "screened on" numbers/letterss. But there are also the heat pressed numbers as well, correct? Would the pic at the bottom (#87) be an example of "screened" while #58 above would be "heat pressed"?

thank you for the pictures and i looked at them very carefully
yes they are heavy screened on" painted on....

you can see the different from 1981 and 1983
LOOK AT THE TOP OF #1 on front of the jersey, u can see the 1981 got curve on top of #1 and for 1983 its more of straight angle line

so i can call my joe montana game worn jersey from 1983 .....
1984 is when they started to wear russell brand.

thanks for the pictures and help

will be selling joe montana game jersey anytime before XMAS
happy collecting !!!
thanks again

Heat-pressed or screened?

November 12 2005, 6:44 PM
Every Wilson-made 49ers jersey from the early 80s that I've seen or owned has heat-pressed (vinyl) letters and numbers. This photo of Dwight Clark was taken October 30, 1983...obvious heat-pressed numbers...NOT screened or painted.

yeah u are right
1984 season is when 49ers started to wear screened on numbers of russell brand

i have seen heat pressed numbers but this 49ers #16 montana jersey is not iron on numbers as they will peel off easily , its like heat pressed heavy painted on the jersey as the jersey itself is THICK !!

Definition clarification

November 12 2005, 7:00 PM
Heat-pressed are plastic lettering that can be applied with a heat press, like iron on. Used by Many NFL and NBA teams of the 70s and 80s.

Screen-printed are painted on, like a silk-screened T-shirt. The mesh holes will be covered by heat-pressed numbers...but, will show through when screened.
Heat-pressed letters often show signs of "peeling" after heavy use.
